I'm really excited...I have an interview for a seasonal part-time position, but I have no idea what hourly wages are typical. If you're a mgr in a mall-type store or know somebody who works PT/seasonal...would you mind sharing the typical hr amt? I'm not trying to be too nosy, I just don't know what would be a good offer (or worse...if they ask what salary I'd expect/want).

Thank you!!

Not a manager anymore, but "negotiable" would be what I would put on the application. Reason? Seasonal is usually temporary (but can lead to perm). They hire you with intention of getting rid of you when they no longer need you. They will only pay you what they want to pay you, so I would think filling in an amount more than what they are willing to pay will get your application tossed and bring on a good chuckle. Seasonal hires usually got paid exactly what new hires were paid. Depends on the store and of course geographic location as to what that pay would be. We all know even at Mc Donald's, one would be paid more in NYC than in S.C.

I worked "seasonally" at Macy's several years ago. The hourly pay was $7 but I was in a commissioned department so I made about $10-15/hour. I ended up working there for about 2 years. When I went from seasonal to a regular employee, my hourly rate jumped a dollar an hour.

Unfortunately it really depends on where you are located. It is more expensive to live in NY then FL, so most NY stores will pay their hourly employees more. Also it depends on the company which you work for. I know Target usually pays new employees pretty well (at least for what part timers get) and the company I used to work for did not pay so well. I'd say expect minumum wage and be excited if you get more.

PS: Be prepared to listen to non-stop christmas music. and a lot of repeats if you work more than 5 hours. My old job had a play list of only about 5 hours so I usually ended up listening to the same music over and over and over...

Thanks everybody for all the info. Luckily the application didn't ask for an amount, so I didn't have to worry about pulling a number out of the air. I've got an interview tomorrow evening and I was a bit worried they might ask what salary I would be wanting.

The lady who set up the interview said that they have "fun" interviews... since I do alot of interviewing at my full-time position, I'm a bit worried about a "fun" interview. I mean, what exactly makes an interview fun? Guess I'll find out tomorrow. If you have any extra pixie dust, I'd appreciate a little. :goodvibes

Thanks!!

Most here in AZ seem to be around the minimum. In CT though, min. wage was $7.10, so I worked at Hollister over the summer and got that. This year I'm working at Abercrombie at get $5.25  which is why i only work 5 hours a week, lol! Just enough for the discount.

On the other hand, Anthropologie out here gets $8.00 an hour....depends on what store you're hired at I guess. Where are you applying?

Build-a-Bear -- it looks like alot of fun. :)

Since down south. I will say anywhere from 5.15 hour to 8.00 dollars being the highest end.

When I worked for Circuit City and best Buy both was 7.00 dollars a hour. I consider that the high end.

Most retail jobs in the south start at 6.00 dollars hour now. Unless go work for TJ Max Inc they start at 5.50 hour.

I just started working at Barnes and Noble last week. It is a seasonal position that i'm hoping will turn into a permenent one. I'm making 7.35/hr.

I don't know if I could work in a clothing store, like TJ Maxx.... watching all the people pick up stuff, unfold it and put it down someplace else.... the temptation of saying "you touched it last, it's yours" would be hard to overcome. :)

My hubby would love it if I worked at Best Buy. I think Home Depot is his home planet and Best Buy is the mother ship. :teeth:
