Are these bugs really BAD???
We are planning a trip to HH in May and wondering whether it will ruin our trip? We have heard you can use use SSS from Avon but are they really that bad? Any advice?

In September at Vero, I was eaten alive. It was pretty bad - especially at the campfire. I have read SSS works great and would definately get some prior to a summer trip to HH or Vero.

Actually, after an hour or two, the bites no longer bother you - we were in HH in early March, 2000 and the only time I noticed them was at dusk on the porch - the only time at VB was also at dusk on the porch (in a rocking chair) - if you plan to be out at dusk, it wouldn't hurt to use SSS - especially for the campfire. Being from Florida, we have gotten used to mosquitos, but several years ago they had an encephalitis scare and Disney handed out warning sheets and everything - what was funny is that when we walked by the campfire, not even down near it, but just on the boardwalk, the smell of Off was so strong, I think the whole insect population headed down the beach for the night

The last time I was at Vero the bugs were so bad
they got into our room and ate us alive while we
were sleeping. I had welts all over me, and it
didn't go away in two hours. I was still itching
a week later at home. I tried Skin So Soft, and
it didn't work. Cutter or Deep Woods Off worked
great. I'm going to Vero the first week in May,
and the insect repellant is the first thing I will
pack. Anita.

I forgot to mention - always close up the doors and windows at night - they can get through the holes in screens!

Anita - you may have gotten chigger bites, if they lasted that long - they get under the skin and can linger for a week or more - they usually get on you from being in the woods - I agree that Off or Cutters with extra DEET is better than SSS - I go canoeing in Florida sometimes and I always thought the big mosquitos just laugh when they smell that Avon stuff - anything with DEET is the most effective.

I lived in SE GA for 8 years and dealt with them all the time.
Some advie, DO NOT wear any perfume, scented hair spray, and try not to use scented soap. For some reason they love to nibble on scalp hair. Its really hard, but try not to scatch, but the itchiness will spread. SSS worked wonders for us and we lived woth then.
