I have Norton Anti Virus 2003 on my computer. My subscription is current and up until today, I have been able to download the new virus definitions using Live Update. Today, I went to download the new virus definitions and I got this error message:

LU1856: Live Update is unable to access the file it downloaded.

The problem is the file didn't download. A virus scan was run yesterday and it showed no viruses. I'm not sure what the problem is, but can someone please help me fix it???

Thanks!

Don't know if you have fixed it yet, but once before I had a similar problem.

I just went back to the live update several more times that same day, got the same message, but after 2 or 3 times it finally was able to do the update.

I think I read the Norton was "phasing out" support for NAV 2003; what I read (in PC Magazine, I think) was that would be able to run out your subscription, then have to buy NAV 2005, or a security suit.
When does your subscription run out? If it's close, maybe you ran into the non support issue.

Edit to Add- I just checked the article, and it was mentioned as a rumor; so I don't think they would be jumping the gun without a formal announcement.

My subscription doesn't run out until September 2005.:earseek: Yesterday, I went to the Symantec website and I clicked on technical support and clicked on automated check. (something like that) Then, a message came up that said 2003 wasn't supported! So, does that mean that even though I have a subscription, I can't use Norton or that I have to pay to update?

I would continue to update definitions, as long as your subrscription is current , you should be able to update them. If they won't, try again later, or check for a confllict with Windows SP2, I think 2003 had an issue with it, there would be a workaround on Symantec's site.

Also, it is good, safe computing habits to always have the most current engine, along with the current defintions. Updates are made on an ongoing basis and annually incorporated into a new engine. The cost of buying a new version is generally little more than a simple renewal of the def updates. And sometimes even less, what with rebates and all. I usually just watch for a deal at the local Best Buy, CompUSA, etc and pick up the current version soon after they are released. As said, sometimes th cost can be close to $0.

I had NAV 2003 and it was about to expire so I upgraded to NAV 2005 what a huge mess! It would not let me install what I had downloaded and I did everything correct. Since I was getting a new computer a few weeks after the expiration date I decided to even buy the option to have it downloaded in more than one computer. I refused to pay the extra money to call their fee based help line (since it seemed like it was their issue) so I just canceled the whole thing and used the anti-virus program that comes with MSN 8.

Now I'm just wondering what to do once my 3 month trial anti-virus subscription runs out.
Try NAV again? Stick to McAfee?
