Northern Sights and Mickey's MAGICal Delights-1st Baltic Cruise-June 12,2010-Pt 2

I assumed that it was just a typo and that the problem was in leaving Stockholm's harbor, not in arriving in Dover's.

...
Being an amature conspiracy theorist, my guess is someone determined that picking up our cruise speed between Stockholm and Dover in order to make it there in time to account for tidal conditions, was gonna cost $xxx in added fuel cost for sailing at 37 knots instead of 34 knots (I have not idea if these numbers are even close to what we really sail at). So when they look at the balance sheets, leaving stockholm 4 hrs earlier and losing a few dollares in excursions, was cheaper than picking up our at-sea cruising speed.

Well, that does make sense...

Unfortunately, it's usually about the money! :rolleyes1

My DH said pretty much the same thing about getting from Stockholm to Dover in 2 days at sea. I think that your theory may be correct. They can save a lot on fuel by keeping the ship at a lower, but steady cruising speed back to Dover.

Not a typo. It says "Due to tial restrictions placed on larger vessels in Dover, England, it is now necessary to depart Stockeholdm at 1:00 pm in order to ensure our timely arrival in Dover."

Pretty clear it is a Dover thing, not a Stockholm issue.

OK, with nothing better to do today, I did a little research and found this from a technical site:

Fuel consumption (FC) is commonly known to be proportional to the cube of velocity.

So is the ship has to cruise 20 knots instead of 18 knots to make up 4 hrs between the ports, this difference, even though it does not look significant, could be about 40% more fuel usage just to go 10% faster.

There is no question that DCL could cruise faster but cruise ships almost never cruise at full speed becuase of the cost.

So my thinking is, since leaving Stockholm early is a cost-avoidance measure by DCL, they should compensate us with something "special" the day we leave Stockholm. I posted earlier on this thread (or the general Baltic thread) that my contact at DCL said they are indeed planning something special for us that afternoon. So we should have a nice suprise to look forward to.

I read the letter and thanks for showcasing how easy it is for typos to happen. :lmao:

I assumed that they meant to type:

"Due to tidal restrictions placed on larger vessels in Stockholm, it is now necessary to depart Stockholm at 1:00 pm in order to ensure our timely arrival in Dover."

Certainly, my assumption could be incorrect. Either way, we're leaving Stockholm at 1pm.

Well, finally broke down and booked my airline reservations! Paid for mine since I get double miles and used FF miles for my daughter.

We are actually on the repositioning cruise, so will already be on the ship when this cruise starts so we will see everyone on board.

Then we are leaving London on Saturday the 26th and headed back to the U.S. We currently have reservations at the Royal Garden Hotel, but am going to do so comparing and may make changes for Thursday and Friday nights.

We are planning on taking one of the DCL buses with the excursion on its way back to London.

Okay, another day closer to cruising! (Actually we are on the Wonder next Thursday, flying to Orlando to get on the ship Thursday because my daughter's 18th birthday is next Friday and she wanted to eat in Palo's on her 18th birthday). Imagine that. She is kinda spoiled when it comes to DCL.

Took me a long time to get this. Vewry funny. :-)

I can see how it could be a "typo".

Looking at the map at the distance travelled between Stockholm and Dover, it's a bit of a surprise that we don't need even more time.

OK - stirring things up a little bit... but I was curious as to what the reason was for this - so I looked at the Dover port website.... Interestingly I found this:

The Port of Dover offers a wide range facilities including 24-hour access, no locks or tidal restrictions and a minimum quay water depth of 8.5 metres. As a result, vessels can berth at any time, day or night and in as little as 40 minutes.

and this on the Stockholm port site:

Oh well, Stockholm wasn't our favorite port....

Well this certainly does give credance to the sbell's guess that "Dover" might be a typo.

Anyone have any updates on the special nights' dinners? Viking instead of pirates, etc. Would love to know.

To those planning on visiting the Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen, looks like an interesting place to work. Let's hope they work things out by the time we get there. Check out the following article.

The three of us are interested; I wanted to make this decision on Sunday night or Monday morning. I'm about 80% sure we are going to join if there's room, but just can't make that decision right now.

I don't see any hurry. I'm sure there will be room for you. More the merrier!

I sent a request to DCL via email regarding this. Their answer was that they are still working on the schedule for the theme night and don't know what it will be.

We saw this in the newspaper this morning:laughing: My husband was looking forward to a tour, now he's looking forward to applying for a job there:lmao:

Thanks to one and all for keeping up on the events of this cruise, good for me as at time like geets busy.

Lynn seems to recall that it was mentioned that DCL would be doing currency exchange, is this correct?
