North vs. South - is there still a "conflict" there?

Oh and parading is starting soon for Mardi Gras!! Moon pies! (I think the whole moon pie thing from the MG floats is a Mobile thing. I've been to NOLA and they don't seem to throw moon pies. Maybe it was just the parade I went to, but I sure didn't see them throw amy.)

They do throw them in NOLA. Just not that many. I usually get a few a year and that is plenty.

Thanks for clarifying. Beads and moon pies are the main throws here. I did get way more doubloons in NOLA, which I was happy about because I love doubloons. Mobile usually throws so many moon pies that we have so many we hafta come up with stuff to do with them. Deep fried moon pie anyone? :rotfl:

Here in Texas we LOVE us some Dr. Pepper, it is soooo sweet (almost like syrup).

Also, in Texas you eat mustard on your burger. Mayonaise is for tuna and potatoe salad. :)

I remeber growing up when all soda pops came in A 12oz returnable bottle.10cents each, and the best way to drink RC was pouring A pack of salted peanuts in it.Now thats old school!!;)

Ah yes, and sittin in War Memorial Stadium watching the Greensboro Hornets baseball with Catfish Hunter pitching...................

What a great childhood!

Around here it was peanuts and Barq's root beer--which was not made by Coke at the time.

Somebody mentioned grits. When my daddy was in the USAF, he had gone months without grits and he was used to having grits every morning with his eggs. So one day he got to the mess hall and saw some grits. He was so excited! Told the cook to put the "grits" right on top of his egg. He said the cook looked at him funny but went ahead. So, Daddy went to the table and buttered up his "grits" and cut them and the eggs all up together with salt and pepper. . . took a big bite--ready for good ole' Southern heaven. and. . . and. . . UCK!! It was Cream of Wheat! :lmao:

For my entire my life, if Mom cooked breakfast, grits were on the menu!

I love grits but only eat breakfast on vacation. On one trip, my husband and I took our kids on an extended trip to New England. At the end of the trip, we were in Boston and I mentioned something to my husband in front of the room service waiter about being in grits withdrawal. The next morning when he delivered breakfast, there were grits on the room service tray. The waiter had gone to a store and found grits for me!!! He was amply rewarded for finding me my favorite breakfast food:).

Born southerner here. Love the food. BBQ, as far as I am concerned Memphis bbq is the best, but I will eat almost any of it. Never did care for sweet tea, just too sweet. Love cornbread, grits, pecan pie. blackeyed peas. Ok I have to stop I am trying to diet and this just isn't working.

That would be a nightmare!! Cream of Wheat is disgusting! :scared1::scared1::scared1:

I love to mix my grits with eggs.

OMG you guys, I'm getting fatter just reading these recent posts! :rotfl:

Mustard AND ketchup for some of us. ;)

As for the barbecue claims, I think that Texas barbecue is perfect. But I'd actually eat any of it. :)

Having lived my whole life in the south I admit I am just a little partial to the south. I was born and raised in south Mississippi and honestly can't think of anywhere else I would rather live. We have some of the kindest, most generous people in the world. One stat I am particularly proud of is that Mississippi gives more money percentage wise to charity than any other state. Some other things that are particularly nice are our music (Elvis, Jimmy Buffett, Faith Hill, BB King, 3 Doors Down), our writers (John Grisham, Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, Nevada Barr, Shelby Foote, Eudora Welty) and don't forget some pretty good athletes come from Mississippi (Jerry Rice, Brett Favre, Steve McNair, Walter Payton, The Manning Boys) and of course there are others (Oprah, Morgan Freeman, Jim Henson) And also we were the first to have a heart transplant, kidney transplant and lung transplant. When people question moving to the south, that there is nothing of any redeeming value here, tell them about this. And this is just one of the southern states.

I spent my teen years in Mobile County; in fact, my mother lives right across the street from USA. I can't even count how many Mardi Gras parades I've been in. My high school served a very poor population and the band used to march in all the parades. Back then they paid us $50 per parade, which at the time really boosted our band coffers. The folks on the floats were very generous to us and we always marched with beads around our necks, moon pies on our hats, and streamers one our horns. Totally decorated.

Now I'm in Georgia and I really miss Mardi Gras. We used to get 2 days out of school so we could celebrate!

OK Bitsmommy, you have me confused. Which one of those isn't a college team? There is the University of Tennessee which definitely has a football team despite how they were treated by that skunk of a human being masquerading as a football coach (otherwise known as Lane Kiffin). And then there is Vanderbilt. I am a Vandy alum so I think that I can say that during many seasons it may be hard to believe that they are actually playing football.
um, the Vikings (in the post you quoted) are a Pro team.

I agree. I was extremely offended by the first paragraph of phragmipedium's post but have refrained myself from commenting so I don't get banned.

yep me too, but thankfully that poster has no plans to move here. Whew!

Sorry, can't let this go--Archie was born in Drew, Mississippi, but his sons are New Orleans born and bred. ;)

I love the people and the food up there, but after 25 years in the South, I'd turn down a million dollars to move back. We're 2 hours from the mountains, 5hours from the beach, and 7 hours from Disney. Today it's 60 and sunny and later I'll be watching the sun set over the lake, with after reading this, some take out bbq :thumbsup2 and a margarita listening to Zack Brown and the Allman Brothers. :goodvibes

So what is Sundrop and Cheerwine?

Sundrop is best described as RC's version of Mellow Yellow and Cheerwine would be best described at RC's Version of Dr. Pepper. Not exactly the same taste, but close.

The Vikings are a Professional Team. Vanderbilt is a college team. I was not referring to UT and Vandy... although that is a big topic of coversation in this area.

No issues here in the large city of Charlotte. it seems like half the people who live here are from somewhere up north. It's true we do refer to some people in our neighborhood as the Yankees, but its not in a mean way. just gentle ribbing. OP I don't think there would really be an issue at all. Most major cities these days (even in the south) are such melting pots of people from all over the US that people hardly even notice anymore whether you're actually from there or not.

What you would consider gentle ribbing gets quite annoying to some of us. When we lived in Charlotte and after I got a job (we had transferred because of DH) not a day went by with out someone calling me a yankee, telling me to go back North, asking me to get the a "pop" because they called it soda. finally one day I said "So we won, I think it's time you move on!!" I know no one meant anything bad by it but it did get annoying!!

As a native Atlantan, I feel it's my solemn duty to drink only Coke! That *cough* other beverage *cough* isn't worth a dime! ;)

:lmao:

I have a friend who was born and raised in Greensboro who makes a big fuss if he has to drink Pepsi. :rotfl2:
