North Carolina Coast recommendations

My SIL (Marine reserves) is in pre-deployment training, getting ready for his 2nd tour in Iraq. He just found out he should be getting a "96" during the first week in August. My DD is busy searching for oceanfront hotels/motels between Wilmington and Jacksonville or in the general area. Do any DISers have any recommendations?

I'm also putting this in the "United We Stand" board but this board gets so much more traffic.

We used to vacation on Wrightsville Beach every year. Our friends have a beach house they own and rent out. It's a quiet, fun beach with shells, etc. And you can go into Wilmington for fun, if you'd like. We love it there.

I have always gone to Sunset Beach, it is on the NC/SC border. Not as busy as Myrtle, but can be in the Myrtle area in about 20 mins.

We went to Pine Knoll Shores, NC, 2 years ago and stayed at the Atlantis Lodge. It was a very unique place. It is a simple motel pretty much out of the 60's. But it was so neat to stay at. It was just a lovely place. They do have a web site I believe.

It was across the street from the Aquarium and there were plenty of restaurants around. There wasn't a ton of things to do, and it is not highly commercialized, but there was plenty to keep you busy.
