Noro-virus on Disney Fantasy?

A few years back my daughter got really ill during the night and we sent to the ship's doctor in the morning and he confirmed Noro. She was quarrantined to our room. They had people checking if we were actually in the room and she wasn't allowed in the dining room or kids club even after she was better. (They were very good with bringing us gatorade and crackers.) However, the one thing that really made me mad was that we obviously couldn't go on the excursion in Cozumel and they didn't refund all of our money and we got charged. Said they would waive my daughter and myself but if my husband chose not to go then they wouldn't wave his excursion. I was kind of mad about that since it was suppose to be a family excursion. Also they kept calling the room so every time I would get my daughter back to sleep and I would doze since I had been up with her 14 times during the night, the phone would wake us up. I finally ended up unplugging and they would send someone to bang on the door. It was kind of ridiculous actually.

I say this being in a family of three where two of us dealt with noro just before Christmas.

What was amiss is that people touched something with noro on it and then put hands in mouths without washing hands.

When we get noro we have ourselves to blame. We can spend time being annoyed at the other person, but if we washed our hands before putting hands in mouths the noro wouldn't have hit us. We can be the end of the story.

With me and ds, we have bad "fingers in mouths" habits and we don't (didn't) wash hands enough*. Apparently we had some peers on the recent Fantasy cruise! Glad we weren't on it.

*DH doesn't have the same habit, and he washes hands more often. It's no surprise that he didn't get it when ds and I did.
What about if it gets in your food?

We just got off the Disney Fantasy this morning. Two of my family members fell very ill with stomach pains, vomiting, and diarrhea. I also personally saw three other people vomit in the halls. On the bus this morning, the people sitting in front of us told us their whole family were vomiting. Another person overheard our conversation and said they saw a crew member vomiting on the upper deck. Has Disney released any info on this?
What floor did they vomit on? Otherwise, how did you like the cruise?

SO sorry this happened to you and as it sounds, so many, on your trip. We leave on the fantasy in a week and a half. Hopefully all is well by then. Does the virus stay on the ship and continue to get passed on to new passengers? Im a bit worried now.

Theres always a possibility, but as long as the ship knows theres several cases onboard, they'll take extra precautions to eradicate it before it gets bad. They'll stop the self serve at the buffets, they'll do deep cleanings of every conceivable surface, they'll have roving cleaners, youll see extra crew in the restrooms cleaning or standing by nearby....

Probably because you went to the ships MD. A standard cold or flu usually doesn't require this.

I think it is the season for Norovirus or stomach bugs too. I haven't cruised but I had a nasty nasty stomach bug all day Friday, hubby came home from work today with it and I'm now laying in my 3 year olds bed because he has it. (And he vomited in my face and it went in my mouth so I can sympathize with the poster who talked about it!! So gross!!) Such a mess when you are home...can't imagine fighting it on a cruise ship!!

Unless you or your child is so sick you need the dr I wonder how many even report it? As stated above-Being stuck in my room even after myself/child is feeling better is awful! You are probably still contagious so I understand, but think many people wouldn't want to go to dr for this reason because they want to enjoy the vacation they waited so long for and its even harder for a child.

Also got off the Fantasy on Saturday.....no sickness with us or our table mates

I do wash my hands a lot anyway, but more so on any vacation.

However at home, DD and DGD had a stomach bug while we have been gone...hopefully I missed that one too ::yes::

Exactly! My daughter was 11 when this happened and never has really been sick. She threw up 14 times that night so I was a little nervous. I couldn't decide what to do. We decided to take her to the ships dr just to make sure. He is the one who confirmed noro. Unless it was an absolute emergency I wouldn't do it again. Our treatment after was not good. I know that she was contagious and kept her in the room for 24 hours after the last time she had gotten sick but 2 days later when I went to go in the dining room or kids club was a little much. Also I still think they should have reimbursed us for all 3 excursions and not just the 2. That was not right. That was cruise number 20 and we are getting ready for number 25 in a few weeks so not bitter, just never really liked how it was all handled.

We were on the Fantasy in Dec and my son (9) got it and then 2 days later I got it. My wife and other son never got it.

Even though it put us out of commission for 2 different days I think Disney handled it exceptionally. And I have been singing their praises to all when I got home.

Initially our son had diarrhea and we tried to buy Imodium from the gift shop. We were told we can't and had to see the Doc. He was the nicest. I was nervous about a huge bill, since they don't take medical insurance and the doctor explained since its a "stomach issue" there is no charge. He gave us meds and said he was quarantined for 24 hours. When we got back to our cabin I went with our oldest to dinner. My wife stayed behind. What happened next happened in the time span it takes to walk from the 8th deck to Animators Palette. We left and then my son got sick over everything. Guest Services knocked at the door checking on our son bringing Pedialite and Gatorade. When she saw my wife dealing with the sickness she got on a walkie talkie and got 2 room stewards in and they blitzed thru cleaning everything in the room. Also the GS rep then called the Dinning Room and told them a parent wasn't coming to dinner and to have dinner brought down for her. So when I got to the Dinning Room the steward said, "I am sorry about your son and dinner is on its way." Leaving me confused, how did he know that? At the same time the head steward came running over saying he was sorry about my son and that dinner was on its way. He explained all that happened and what they were doing. He explained the notification system (It started with the doctor's visit thru to the Guest Services visit). I was floored.

When I got back to the cabin, curtains, room dividers, bed spreads, everything was gone taken out to be cleaned. GS explained that if we needed laundry done they would pay for it.

Two days later I came down with it. I wasn't as extreme as my son (no extreme laundry/cleaning services needed). But I had it worse so the doctor gave me a shot along with the meds. Again no charge.

Now we had an excursion planned with Captain Marvin's in Grand Cayman (not thru Disney) so my youngest and wife couldn't make it. I explained to Capt Marvin's that only 2 of the 4 reserved were going to make it they said no problem. When I got sick it was a day at sea. So stuck in my cabin feeling crappy while sitting on my balcony is better than being sick at home!

Now in telling this story I know that Disney is only looking out for them selves by cleaning up and trying to keep us contained so the sickness doesn't spread. I understand. But if we had vacationed at the shore and gotten sick it would have put us out of commission for more than two days since we would have to clean up the mess, deal with broken schedules, doctors visits and pharmacy visits, etc.

So I feel if I had to get sick somewhere at least I was on a cruise being pampered. So to add insult to injury later in the week when we got to CC we only had 2 hours on CC before thunder and lighting cleared the beach and we were never able to go back. So we only had 2 hours on CC.

The cruise though wasn't the best was still better than other vacations we have had.

Sorry about the long post.

After you and your son felt better did they allow you back in dining room and to take part in kids club activities?

Wow this is crazy. We were on the Feb 20th Fantasy cruise - we didn't see any vomiting or people with those symptoms. Although there were 2 unrelated medical incidents: In the middle of the night/early morning someone had to be let off on an island in the Bahamas (the boat had stopped but we honestly wouldn't have noticed if they didn't make an announcement), and on another day someone had to be medivac-ed on a helicopter which landed on the ship to pick up the passenger and then left. Not sure what the issues were with the passengers (or crew) but hope they are ok.

Yes, he was. The 24 hour quarantine... it wasn't like there was a guard at the door. We were called maybe 2 times and only the one visit. The calls were, "How is everyone doing, is there anything I can do for you", type of calls. I was fine with the meds after 24 hours. And thank goodness since that was our Palo night!

Wash your hands carefully with soap and water—

  • especially after using the toilet and changing diapers, and
  • always before eating, preparing, or handling food.

This is one reason why I really dislike the cute but not necessary servers cutting up your children's food. The kids handle the silverware and then the server does, and then he's doing at the next table, and the next table, etc...

It seems sweet that they are helping parents, but really it is increasing the risk of spreading all viruses. I wish DCL would tell the servers to stop this service.
