Noro-virus on Disney Fantasy?

We just got off the Disney Fantasy this morning. Two of my family members fell very ill with stomach pains, vomiting, and diarrhea. I also personally saw three other people vomit in the halls. On the bus this morning, the people sitting in front of us told us their whole family were vomiting. Another person overheard our conversation and said they saw a crew member vomiting on the upper deck. Has Disney released any info on this?

Sorry your family members are sick but Disney won't release any info on this.

Did your family report your situation to the medical center while on board? If not, then Disney has no official record that your family members were sick. And if not, consider how many other passengers that you saw that were sick that also may not have reported it to the medical center. They keep close tally of people that are sick with noro-like symptoms, but only for those that report it.

Also, there is a mandatory federal requirement of disclosing a norovirus outbreak to the next set of passengers, if the rate of infection exceeds a certain threshold from the previous cruise. The first time I sailed on the Fantasy, I received such a notification upon check-in. Our cruise ended up being non-eventful as far as sickness went.

We did not report the illness to medical. However, we did let our cabin steward know. In addition, an officer on the ship had to get my son a wheelchair as he couldn't walk on his own. He was made aware but I am sure nothing was officially documented. My question was more for informational purposes. I was just curious. Multiple people in our sailing Facebook group reported the same symptoms. One person had passed out due to the illness. Luckily, my son's illness was the last night and he still enjoyed a magical cruise.

We got off this morning, too. We had no issues and never noticed anyone feeling ill. Hope you all feel better.

I want to say that it's 3% to report but it goes to the CDC not the next set of passengers. The only way you would know of people were sick on the previous cruise is if the crew said something or you happened to see the passengers physically sick getting off the ship.

Partially true. The report does go to the CDC, but they then notify the public. So you would know of an "outbreak" of 3% or more (you're correct in that figure) because the CDC would post it. Their public notifications are very timely...for example, they have reported a Norovirus outbreak on the Carnival Sunshine, which returned and docked today.

Now the good news: For the past 20+ years of CDC reporting on cruise ship Norovirus outbreaks, they have reported 224 separate cruise ship sailing from many lines. ZERO have been from Disney! Disney has had two reports of other virus outbreaks, the latest in 2002, 14 years ago.

Don't know that the OP experienced or witnessed, but DCL did not report at least 3% of the passengers having any kind of GI (gastrointestinal) illness from that cruise.

True but it's not exactly targeted to the next group of travelers. They are good at diseminating info In a timely manner but it's not like the next set of travelers gets a letter saying that the previous cruise had a noro outbreak.

People keep commenting on our cruise Facebook group. It sounds like half the ship was sick.

Two out of four we sick in our cabin-- had to call for a complete bedding change in the middle of the night. Carpets cleaned as well! Something was definitely amiss on the Famtasy this past week.

I always find these "did you get sick" posts amusing/strange, and kinda pointless.
Why does it matter to those that were on the cruise how many people got sick?
It's not like you can attribute blame to any one person or the cruise line, especially when you haven't reported the sickness to the medical personnel?
You can't sue the line because you agreed to the T's and C's before sailing, you have no proof of actual diagnosis of noro being contracted on the ship or even who brought it aboard or who contaminated spaces or surfaces.
What is the point of asking if others got sick?

I say this being in a family of three where two of us dealt with noro just before Christmas.

What was amiss is that people touched something with noro on it and then put hands in mouths without washing hands.

When we get noro we have ourselves to blame. We can spend time being annoyed at the other person, but if we washed our hands before putting hands in mouths the noro wouldn't have hit us. We can be the end of the story.

With me and ds, we have bad "fingers in mouths" habits and we don't (didn't) wash hands enough*. Apparently we had some peers on the recent Fantasy cruise! Glad we weren't on it.

*DH doesn't have the same habit, and he washes hands more often. It's no surprise that he didn't get it when ds and I did.

Right. I never see "did anyone on flight xxx come down with something?" Half of my daughter's class is sick with something. It's that time of year. Whether you picked it up at school, on the plane, at a store, it's going around.

Wash your hands carefully with soap and water—

  • especially after using the toilet and changing diapers, and
  • always before eating, preparing, or handling food.
Noroviruses can be found in your vomit or stool even before you start feeling sick. The virus can stay in your stool for 2 weeks or more after you feel better. So, it is important to continue washing your hands often during this time.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can be used in addition to hand washing. But, they should not be used as a substitute for washing with soap and water.

Handwashing is like a "do-it-yourself" vaccine—it involves five simple and effective steps (Wet, Lather, Scrub, Rinse, Dry) you can take to reduce the spread of diarrheal and respiratory illness so you can stay healthy. Regular handwashing, particularly before and after certain activities, is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of germs to others. It's quick, it's simple, and it can keep us all from getting sick. Handwashing is a win for everyone, except the germs.

Remember to use a paper towel when exiting the restroom, I go above and use a paper towel to turn the water on and another to turn it off. Visiting Disneyland every other weekend where they have the push buttons faucets to turn the water on is so disgusting! After people use the restroom, they push the button, then they push it again to turn the water on to rinse, recontaminating!! A quick wash is not long enough.

Some people, me included, are immune to noro-virus. My father, brother, and one of my children are too. We found out through DNA mapping.

Wow! I am going to read up on this. My son covered me in his sickness off the Dream cruise and I was wondering why me and my other son felt fine, never even got the least bit quesy.

Yuck! Sorry this happened to so many... I would be so upset if my vacation was marred my illness. When I cruise, I a, super conscious of our hand washing. We try to avoid the public restrooms and only use our own. However, I know it's futile as I can't control the habits of others and what they touch (soda lids, food serving tops, juice machine buttons, door handles, ec. Etc. etc.)

I guess it woild be nice if DCL would let peoeol know The risk of illness so those who do care can take extra precautions such as not eating at cabanas or Being more conscious how they interact with public "stuff"

I got Noro last month because my baby with Noro projectile vomited in my mouth. Good times indeed.
