Hi there everybody,
Norm and I got back this afternoon - he hadn't been feeling well so we decided to skip our last class reunion fuction and come back home to Cape Canaveral - seeing the 'kids" we grew up with from day one was just so great - it went from class of 1952 to class of 1959 - the guys had a great time reliving all their mischiefs and the gals of course talked how much those great looking boys had "changed" somewhat -
Anyhow the functions we did go to were well worth the going home trip -
Meanwhile I did have time to check out something - also before I forget, I did mail out 15 packets some due to the fact I didn't have a sailing date and was concern that just maybe it could be the 8th and I didn't want anyone to not have their infor - they are coming to you loaded with stuff.
I went by Kino's and did find out that will NOT be open on Mother's day - now when I spoke to the cuban lady, she was undecided as to what she was going to do, but as she said she wanted the staff and herself to be home with the children on that day and also be able to go to the graveyard to honor their mother's which is something that is very traditional - I would check anyhow if you are there - I also went by Touch of Gold which is right in front of Keno's - Vinny and Gary are still so honest with everyone - I have known them for about 15 or so years and have never found them to be dishonest with their customers or a high pressure technique stuff - I still recommend them highly and they will give you conch rates especially if you tell them I recommend them - I also found that right by TOG, a place that does have some beautiful painted coconuts ready for mailing - the charge is $19.95 which includes postage - I know for a fact that the postage runs between $4.00 to 6.00 for mailing - went to the post office to check it out - is it worth it? Well it does make a conversation piece - Norm as a 40 year veteran as a postman commented "glad its not me delivering it"
I went to a shop I was quite impressed with about a year ago and decided to talk to the owners about their chances of giving conch rates to those that went in there - they said they were more than glad to do so - I find their products nice, well presentation and MOST OF ALL NO high pressure sales pitch - they too are right accross from Touch of Gold and its call Lovable look - I got their business card and will enclose it with the Key West packets that I mail to those that want them - they offered to pay me for recommending them, but I asked that to please give the extra discounts to you - I believe you will be pleased -
As I was walking, I started speaking to a young man from Canada - I had my little 4 legged "child" with me and he took interest in her - he was young and his first trip to Key West - he spoke of going to the tee shirt shops on Duval Street and said he got so confused to being pulled in so many directions with how many tee shirts do you want, what size etc, that he got the heck out of there and decided to check shops on Whitehead Street - I gave him some information and he was on his way with a sigh of relief - he suggested Key West would do good putting me up as their PR ------anyhow Norm and I checked the new Messon De Pepe out on North Roosevelt - oh my gosh the food, the presentation, the place all was great - but then it is a latin restaurant and my grandfather's picture is there so just maybe I was swayed a little
Now noone knows for sure when the dredging of the waters will begin, but it should be this month - I learned the Navy is coming back to Key West - the nuclear subs will come from Puerto Rico to Key West - the Navy was literally "thrown out" of Key West in 1972 and now they are coming back in full force - new housing at Sigbee's and on White street will housed them - Norm and I were talking before long the island is going to sink - anyhow the area where the cruise ships come in need to be dredged another 32 feet in order to accomadate all that will be happening down there - some of the cruisers will be "ferry in" - Disney among other cruise ships have decided they would wait until cruisers can disembark without so much problems.
I also learned the city is trying to find a way to deal with the almost 2000 homeless people in Key West to get them into housing and jobs - this way the panhandling won't be so much especially on duval Street - Traffic is very heavy and parking is even harder - I was lucky - I only had to walk a few blocks from where I was going and it was an enjoyable walk .
Well that is about it for now - I did bring a bunch of goodies for anyone that wants it, but will post more on that later.
Hugssssssss to all
Always
