So, just finished my residency and passed boards (but still no job!!). My program gives me a grad present of 200 for books... I dont need any reference book at this time and thought I would use it for the nook (just give a receipt from barnes and noble). Was thinking of getting the color so will have to pay some out of pocket. Am noticing that a lot of nook books are MORE expensive than paperbacks! For those with the nook--is it worth it?? I also have a B & N membership and see there is NO discount for nookbooks!!

Some of the books are more, some are less, some are way less as there are free books and special offers. New ones are posted every week; I just downloaded 6 limited time offer free books and a bunch more of the 99 cent books.

But I love it for the pure fact that I can get a book any time any where and not have to go to a store to get a book. The gas savings alone totally make having a nook "worth it".

There are a bunch of really good free books. I love my Nook, it is definitely worth it to me.

It's absolutely worth it! I rarely buy books for more than $4! I LOVE my Nook!! Mine is the first one, so not color, but I really LOVE my Nook!! They have tons of free books and lots of "steals and deals" as well.

I love my nook color:love: The most I have paid for a book was 9.99 but all others were 2.00 and under.. most I got for free or downloaded from the library.

And a plus.. you can also play angry birds on it

I didn't buy my Nook to save money. I bought it for convenience and to stop having shelves and drawers full of books I have read. Our library here is pitiful so I was buying a lot of books. Now, I can get e-books. I also have a friend who has tons of books on pdf and she emails them to me and I can read them. I really love it. I have one of the black and white Nooks because all I want it for is to read and I like the screen a lot better. Now I'm debating upgrading to the new Nook 2 because it looks awesome!

I love my Nook. B&N has a free book every Friday. Mostly I check books out from my library.

I have a non-color nook and LOVE it. I can borrow books from my library, and also free books at Project Gutenberg.

Totally worth it, particularly if you've ever packed a stack of books to go on vacation!

I have the non color Nook as well.

Check to see if B&N has some Nooks on sale in their reconditioned/refurb area. Sometimes the prices are really good.

As for books, I have found tons of reference type materials.

I am a teacher and I use it for myself and my students. My students love it.

I have over 300 books on my Nook and I have only paid for one.. this shows that there are decent books out there.

I love my nook color..does so much more than just books and I haven't paid for a book yet and am reading some good ones. If you go to freebookspot dot com they have alot of books for free. But my nook color came with over 200 books loaded on it. It does email, apps, and is like a tablet. I love it.

I would suggest you spend some time with each version at the store before you buy. I could not read on the nook color for long periods of time - it's like a tablet. The regular nook is the e-ink screen. You can read from any angle, whereas the color requires you be straight on. Mine is much more like reading a book page.

I get the vast majority of my nook books from the library and I monitor the free Fridays.

Love my original Nook!!!! It goes everywhere with me. There are tons of free and cheap books plus I can borrow for free from the library. Best purchase I've made in a long time!

Thanks everyone!!! I will definitely get one! Now i have to really decide--color or regular! I think I will not be reading books on it all the time and like that I can get stuff for my daughter (who is starting kindergarten) on the color.. DH says even if I get a get job we are NOT buying the ipad, so I think of this as the poor man's ipad (hope that does not offend anyone!). So may just get the color---I would have to pay 70 out of pocket...

Now another question------it says if I am at B & N I can read a book for free for an hour per day... So if there is a $10 book I want I can go everyday and read it for an hour for free everyday until I am done???

GREAT TIP!! I just looked at what I can get at the two public libraries I have access to as well as project gutenberg! While I didnt find much at NY public lib., the others had GREAT stuff!!! yay!!!

I just got an email from B&N. If you become a new member you can get $25 off the Nook color or $10 off the Nook original. I know you already have a membership. But is your membership going to expire soon? Maybe get your husband to sign up to get the discounts?

Also, I would suggest the Free Library of Philadelphia for library ebooks. They are supposed to have a huge selection of ebooks available. And anybody can get a membership. It's free if you are a PA resident, 65 or older, a veteran or a member of the armed forces. It's $15 annual fee for everybody else. It's a great option if your local library doesn't have ebooks or only a small selection.

If want to save some money and you are planning to buy via the web site make sure to sign up for e-bates. Once you have an account, click the link to connect with Barnes and Noble, buy some e-gift certificates equal to the amount of your purchase plus tax - in a couple of months you will get back a rebate equal to 4% of the purchase price of the e-gift certificates. Once you have the e-gift certificates (takes up to 24 hours), go back to ebates, log in and again connect to barnes and noble pay for the Nook with the e-gift certificates you purchased. You will get back another 4% :thumbsup2

They actually have more than one free book, they just only advertise one. :sad2: Barnes and Noble matches most (but not all) amazon specials so also check here at least once a week:

http://www.amazon.com/s/?node=2279458011

and for the time being also check here

http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.ht...d_t=101&pf_rd_p=1300308102&pf_rd_i=1286228011

Then search for the book on the Barnes and Noble Website - except for a few random books I've been able to get all the free books that Amazon has offered free from B&N.

I just downloaded two of my son's high school reding list books onto my Nook. He can read them over the summer and write the paper . These were the "secondary" books, the primary book still has to be a paper book--to be brought to class.

Not happy with my Nook Color. Got it from my DH for Christmas this last year. Now it doesn't work. Nothing. I did some research and this is a common problem. Barnes and Nobel have been really jerky about how I can get it fixed. It is headache after headache here and I really wish I had just bought a Kindle.

That said...there are opportunities to buy discounted books and that was nice. While mine worked I really liked it.
