So I have read many of the threads on this subject and I still have a few questions...

First a little background...I have 2 young DDs and hope they could enjoy an ereader too. I have wifi in my home. Now that my kids are a little older, I have more opportunity to read. I am looking for something I can take to the beach AND read in bed. I enjoy books and reading magazines.

I thought I wanted the Nook Color for the kids books, apps, games, library borrowing and for reading in bed.

I also thought the Kindle 3 also sounds good because I want to be able to read it outside, 3g, Amazon is easy and great, cheaper...

So, does anyone know if you can read the Kindle 3 in the dark? How are their kids books? Are they as flashy as the nook color? does it have apps?

I am thinking of buying one in a couple of weeks and I am trying to collect as much information as possible.

Thanks in advance for any advice or knowledge you can share.:)

I have a clip on book light so I can read in the dark. The screen is not lit.

I read my Nook Color outside. I have to turn up the brightness, but I've yet to have an instance where I could not read it. Inside I keep the brightness level very low.

DH has a Kindle, and the case with the built-in light. He loves it!

Same here.

OP, also, you don't need to have internet access to READ books only buy and download them so as long as you download books before you go out, you don't need 3g. One thing to keep in mind, there are not a lot of books available for YOUNG kids yet. I don't know how old your kids are but if they are younger than 10-12, you won't really find anything for them on Kindle and only some things on Nook.

The 4-8 age category pulls up more than 3000 books on Amazon. :confused3

I love my kindle. I especially love Amazon's customer service. They have replaced my kindle twice now for things I have done to it, no questions asked. Not a good idea to leave it in a chair and have a kid sit on it :)

The other thing I love is the Kindle Android App. I don't have to take my kindle everywhere. If I have a few minutes, I can just pull my book up on my phone and read away. DH just shook his head at me recently when I was reading my book during the 7th inning stretch at a Colorado Rockies game. (It was a good part of the book!)

However, there are pros and cons to both readers.

I would suggest you go to Wal-Mart, since they sell both now and compare them side by side to see which one you prefer.

Ok, let me rephrase that, the books you see on Kindle are just print, maybe some black and white photos. If you want the books for little kids to look like books for little kids the only option is Nook Color.

Kindle with case with a light. Love it. Had nothing but problems with the Nook. Never could hook it up with WiFi. Exchanged it 3 times and still couldn't get it to work so I returned it and bought the Kindle. Did I say I LOVE MY KINDLE

Thank you!

I went and checked out the Nook today at B&N today. After seeing the three different ones and playing around for about 30 min. I am leaning toward the Nook color. I had my DDs with me and they both loved the kids books. They liked the "read to me" option and the little animated illustrations. They were both super excited to read on their own too. hmm. They seemed to enjoy it so much I am wondering if I would ever be able to use it...;) They wanted me to buy one right on the spot.

I liked apps that are available, but thought it was a little heavier than I expected. However, the B&W Nooks were super light and felt good in the hand.

Tomorrow I will check out the Kindle...

Thanks again.

I have been looking at both too..

The only drawback to Kindle ( for me) are the keys.. yep have touch screen on my DROID.. and have gotten real used to it and i saw a kindle today at BB and the buttons were a pain to me..

i wish Kindle had a touchscreen..

Fair warning: my 3 yo always wants to co-opt my NC the minute I take it out. However, it DOES keep her busy on planes and in doctor's waiting rooms. ;)

Most of the Read-to-Me books are a tad pricey, so I don't have many, just a few classics like Cat in the Hat. I also have some simple Android apps for her, such as a paint pad and a jigsaw puzzle app. Libraries' Overdrive accounts don't have the read-to-me picture books, but they do have a lot of chapter books for kids, as well as a wide variety of adult popular reading.

Today I checked out the Kindle and I have to say... I liked that too. I liked the free 3g option, felt good in the hand, and price.

However, I think I am still leaning toward the Nook Color...

If I was going to go for a B&W e-reader I would have a tough time deciding.

This is why I think I will get the NC. My 6yo likes the picture books and my 8yo likes to read chapter books. However, I do see them fighting over it as a potential problem...;) That's IF I let them use it.:rolleyes1
