I am not tech savvy at all. I'm trying to decide what to get my 15yo DD. :santa: She reads constantly.

I understand some of these e-readers also have game apps, email, wifi, etc. She enjoys reading and watches a lot of youtube videos. Does anyone have any recommendations that would fit the bill? Can you load mp3s on these? I am willing to pay up to $200.

Also, do these usually come with any preloaded books? I looked at a few I know she would want (Twilight, Hunger Games, etc.) and they cost about $9 each on amazon. Looks like these would add up quickly.

Thanks for your opinions.

The new Kindle Fire is in your price range at $199. The original Nook Color has just had a price drop to meet it, but the newer Nook Color that will be out before Christmas is $249. Both are LCD tablets that will stream movies, play music, and act as ereaders. I am a Kindle fan and have had their product since they first introduced the Kindle in 2008 - I think you can't beat Amazon's customer service and features. Others will be here to tell you the features of the Nook and you can choose the one that sounds best for your daughter.

No books come pre-loaded - both kinds of readers now offer library checkout from your public library, and Kindle can also access a library from Amazon itself. Popular YA books are probably going to be in the 9.99 range but there are plenty of others cheaper or free, and she can get on a wait list at the library for the ones you don't want to spend the money on.

Also, Amazon gift cards make a nice gift from other relatives, for graduation gifts, etc.

I prefer the kindle, honestly because it's connected to Amazon. The iPad is out at your price range, which leaves you with the Nook Color or the Kindle Fire. Both will work for you. Amazon though, imo, offers a more encompassing experience (ie she can rent a movie from Amazon if she wants to view on her kindle fire) and also offers much, much better customer service. I am always floored on the rare occasions I need to call Amazon for something. Last weekend on Friday night I popped in a DVD I had bought new and it wouldn't play. I turned it over and there was a big ole gash in it. I sent an email, and was amazed that a new DVD was at my door on Saturday at 10am, only about 14 hours after I had sent the email. I'm sure that that shipping cost them more than the $5 DVD, but they go way above and beyond what i would expect.

If you DO decide to go with the kindle, I would preorder it soon. The price won't be dropping since it's a new release, and I wouldn't be surprised if they sold out before Christmas.

For a 15 YO, I would not count out an iPod Touch, because it is so portable. I just finished reading an ebook on my iPhone while at the gym and my eyes, like the rest of me, are old! And I read DisBoards all the time on my iPhone.

With an iPod Touch, she could only use the Internet with a WiFi signal. But she could listen to music, play many games and read books anywhere.

Does she already have a phone to text? The iPod Touch would allow texting when she has a WiFi signal, but only to others on iOS. -- Suzanne

If this would primarily be for reading, I would rule out an iPod Touch. Personally, I would chose a Kindle or Kindle Fire, but read the specs for the Kindle and the Nook before deciding.

I agree if you want a Kindle, order yesterday! The new ones are a very hot item and you may not be able to get one for Christmas.
