I am wanting to get my mother a Nook Color for her birthday. Does anyone know if there are any deals? It looks like it is the same price at every place I look. Also, does anyone know of any benefit from buying it directly from Barnes and Noble vs. somewhere like Best Buy. Any advice would be appreciated. I do not know much about these, but this is the only thing she has mentioned that she was interested in. Thanks!

I don't think they have had sales on them yet, since the color is the newest option. One thing to consider with the NookColor, it hurts your eyes to look at it very long, very similar to staring at a computer screen all day. I have the wi-fi and 3g Nook that retails for $199 and I have to say as an advid reader it is one of the best gifts I have ever gotten!!:cool1:

I got a Nook Color when they came out in November and I love it. I doubt you'll find any deals on it any time soon, since it is the newest product in their line. We have a B&N right around the corner that is next door to a Best Buy, so it just made sense for me to buy it from B&N.

I have zero complaints about my Nook Color and I read 1-2 hours a day on it with no eye strain problems.

I have the nook color and when you adjust the settings that control brightness and text size and even background color it makes it very comfortable to read. I have spent hours reading with mine and not had any eye strain. there is a "night" setting that makes the page grey and the text white and it is more confortable to read tha, i have found, then to read with the bright white background and the black text.

I got mine directly from B&N because when we went to Best Buy we couldn;t get any customer service and B&N was extremly helpful in explaining why the nook was a good purchase and explaining the differences between the different versions. I have not seen the color ones go on sale yet though. We have been watching just incase the price drops and we need to do a price match/adjustment from when i got the color about 2-3 weeks ago

I have no eye strain problems with my Nook Color. I was afraid that I would when my DH got it for me. I have to say that I love it. I love reading it in the dark too. I have not seen any deals on it.

I ordered my Nook online through B&N (with free shipping) so I could go through ebates to get the rebate, which was 6% at the time. Looks like there is free shipping right now for Nook Color, so this might be an option.

You can't get 3G with the Nook Color. That's my big problem with it. I have a Nook and a Kindle and both are 3G and wonderful.

Here is a do it your self deal that will take a little while to realize but I know for sure that this will work as I did it with the regular refurbished Nook 3G in December. Go to ebates and if you are not already a member sign up. :surfweb: Then connect to Barnes & Noble where you can then buy an electronic GC equal to the amount of the Nook Color + Tax and send it to yourself. You will get back 4% of this amount (Around $10). Once you have received your GC (should take a couple of hours maybe less) go to ebates and again log in and connect to Barnes & Noble. Buy the Nook Color and pay for it using the GC. Shipping on Nooks is generally free. You will get back another $10. Total cash back is about $20. It's not much and it will take a couple of months to get your rebate but it's definitely better than nothing. :thumbsup2

You can check around to see if any other sites have a better rebate % but I know that B&N honors the rebate on GCs thru e-bates and with most other rewards sites this is not the case.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't know about the Nook color doesn't have 3G. Anyone have any thoughts on Color vs. 3G. I think my mom will read about 50% books and 50% magazines.

The lack of 3G on the Nook Color gave me pause too, at first. It doesn't really bother me now, though. I have access to WiFi all the time at home, and pretty frequently when I'm traveling. I haven't felt the need to download a book while I'm in the car or anything like that yet.

Can you tell me how to find this "night" setting? I have searched settings and cannot seem to find it.

You should check out bn.com and see which magazines are available for nook vs nookcolor. They are not all compatible. Also, I don't think I'd enjoy a magazine in black & white personally.

I'm not sure if anyone here was the person who recommended the 12 days of xmas children's book but if so, thanks! It is soooo darn cute and I love that it sings rather than reads the book and free to boot - awesome!!

The battery life of the Color is very short in comparison to the regular. Something like 8 hours vs 1 week....

bumping to hopefully get an answer about the settings....

Someone will correct me if I am wrong I hope.

For reading in the dark I just adjust the brightness down. But there is a setting that if you tap what you are reading that allows you to adjust the color of the screen. At least that is how I think I got it to come up. I looked in the user guide and it had instructions there. It depends on the publisher I believe though. So not everything changes that way. If I am wrong please correct me. I was doing this late at night.;)

Color for sure with magazines!

I don't find the battery life that short for reading at all, but then, I actually power mine completely down when I'm not reading. Currently I'm 10 reading hours into a charge, using it on the Night setting, and it's only about half-down. Turning off the wifi conserves the battery, too, because that does draw a lot of power.

I pretty much only read library books on it, and that is my peeve with it -- only the purchased books show up on the main menu. For library books you have to go down to Files, then the Adobe folder, and deal with the abbreviated file names under the plain blue block icons.

I bought the Minimal Trifold cover, and I love that. The best thing about it for me is that I like to read in bed, but need to lie on my side to do it because DH will wake up if there is any light at all reaching his face. With the trifold, I can make an easel and prop the Nook on the mattress so that I only need one hand to flip the pages.

PS: One other little peeve; the wifi settings will not remember your network security key if you turn the wifi off while the Nook is powered up. My cover has pockets on it, so I wrote the key on a card and tucked it inside, but it's a PITA to have to re-enter it so often.

This must be something unique to the Nook Color as I don't have this problem with my plain old Nook 3G. Not only does it remember my settings it remembers the settings of every place I've ever been that has wi-fi including mcdonald's, my parents house, B&N, the school and more. I think I had 10 places showing up at one time.

Notursula,

I have not had that happen with my Nook Color. I never have to enter anything in since I set it up. Maybe something is wrong with the way it was setup? That would be very frustrating! Mine is like the quote above. It has all of the previous one's popping up when I sign on even though they are not in range at all.

Oh, it finds the network just fine, but asks again for the security key before you can access it. None of the public places you mentioned are keyed networks, so it doesn't happen with those; only the key-secured ones that I use at home and at the office.
