Nook, another question

I have the 3G Nook and love, love, love it. My kids loved it so much that I bought one of the refurbished 3G ones for middle DS for christmas. (Well, I picked it up but Grandma and Grandpa paid for it and gave it to him.)

If you eventually get a second Nook sharing books on the same account is definitely possible as long as you don't mind your kids having access to your literature. That's the reason I set DS up with his own account. Some of my romance books are a little too racy for a 10 yo.

If you can afford it definitely go for the 3G - it's so nice to be able to download a book where-ever you are. We were on vacation at a really old, really basic beach cottage (so no computer, nevermind wi-fi) this summer and DS was in bed and finished the book he was reading and we just went online and bought him a new one right on the spot.

We are a 2 Nook household, I got one for my bday in May and love it. Mine is the 3G version. I thought it was great when we were camping and I was able to download a new book when I finished my old one. I have a case that's not pictured on the website anymore, it opens like a book and has a place for a photo in the front, it makes it look like a journal instead of a Nook. The girls got one from their Grandpa for Christmas, it's a WiFi. They got the Alice cover. We do have one account for both but I'm thinking of giving them their own. I too have certain books I would rather they didn't read. lol You do have to have a cc on the account to get books but I rarely pay anything over $5 for books, I normally get them for free actually, B&N has a large selection of free and very discounted books. Enjoy your Nook, we really enjoy ours.

I'm sorry, one more question about borrowing from the library? Is it like a regular book? It has to be turned in by a certain date?

Yes, but you don't have to actually return it. It just "disappears" from your account at the end of the borrowing period. No overdue fees if you don't get it back on time.

Rachael, do you mind telling us where you get the library books from ? I'm having the darndest time trying to find what libraries loan books to Nook....

Besides the Philadelphia Free Library (application form for out of state residents here http://www.freelibrary.org/registration/Card_Application.pdf ) and the library in your town or county, check the library system where you work. Many libraries offer borrowing to people who work in the community.

As a PP noted, often the wait time for ebooks is shorter than you would wait for a regular book. So far I've not waited more than 7 days to borrow an ebook from my county library. With popular books, I've often waited a month or 2 for a "real" book.

re: borrowing. bn.com also has info on some sort of 'lend me' program where you have a friends/family list. Some books have a 'lend me' button, and you can loan those out. While you loan them out, they're not available in your own library. I don't know how many of their titles have this option or not.
I don't know anyone else in RL with a nook so I haven't tried this yet.

There's also apparently a loophole with library-lent books where if you don't close out of the book, turn your nook off, or plug it into your computer to charge, then the book will stay there as long as you want. Again, something I don't have experience with, just something I've heard-I just got my nook 2 weeks ago.

The most popular service for library popular lending is provided by the Overdrive company. If you cannot see a reference to it on your local library's website, call the reference dept. and ask them if they participate.

If they don't, ask them if the library participates in a regional cooperative lending network that does. It is common in rural areas, especially, for a single library not to be able to afford to buy into Overdrive service, but what is often done is that several smaller libraries will pay a fee to a larger one to allow reciprocal borrowing for their patrons; the large library that actually manages the service gets the benefit of more money to put into the service, and the smaller libraries get access that they could never afford on their own. (Overdrive isn't cheap. For the avg. library it starts at around $30K/yr, and goes up to over 10X that, depending on how many titles and copies of those titles that you license.)

There are also quite a few systems that subscribe to a service called eBrary, and one called My-i-Library. Both of those services are geared more toward technical and reference materials and market more heavily to college libraries; they have a lot of things that lend by the chapter rather than the entire book.

Do you have a cover and if so, which one and do you like it?

I have the Kindle, but I think this is a universal answer:

Yes, I have a cover. When I first got my Kindle, I was worried about scratching it, dropping it, or otherwise damaging it. With nothing "on it", I worried about dropping it. Once I put a decal sticker on it, it felt slightly more "grippy". I have a Borsa Bella quilted bag, which isn't all that much protection -- but I'm an adult who doesn't share the Kindle and who rarely transports it.

Especially since you intend to share it with children, you should put a cover on it IMMEDIATELY. If I were you, I'd get one of the strong notebook style covers -- better to do that than to have to be angry with the children when an accident happens. It's a small insurance policy.

I'm thinking of getting a Nook color for my birthday. Can someone explain the difference between wifi and 3G? Is 3G bascially cell service and therefore the Nook can be used anywhere? I have to be honest I'd be getting the Nook more for the ability to surf the web and read magazines. I am in my car so often I listen to books on CD, about one a week. However a couple weeks ago I was on a 2 hour train ride and had my big fat copy of New Moon with me and it was so heavy I thought boy it would be nice to have a skinny Nook!

The main difference is that with the 3G you can access b&n from anywhere. Having a Nook 3G will not allow you to surf the web in the same way as you can from your 3G phone w/ data plan.

You can surf the web w/ the wifi Nook as long as you're in a hotspot. Truth be told, the interface isn't all that great.
