Nook, another question

I have gone back and forth whether or not to get a Nook. I now have a gift card to B&N and am again thinking I might bite the bullet and buy one. If you have a nook, do you love it? Do you have a cover and if so, which one and do you like it? My son and I would share it because we are the readers in the house. I also think it will be handy for my other children's required school reading. I wouldn't have to drive all over kingdom come to find the book they need. I appreciate everyone's help!

I love mine. I use it primarily for library ebooks, but I just got a ton of giftcards for Christmas so I'll be buying a lot of books now too. I just have the silicone case from B&N and then I put a screen protector on.

You can also download a lot of the classics that are now public domain from websites like Project Gutenberg for free.

DD got one for Christmas, the only thing I don't like is that I have to keep an cc on her account even to download free books...

I have one and love it! I usually do the discounted books or free/library books, but I also got a ton of GC for my birthday and xmas so I am using them now. I still look for the lower prices - in fact I used a gc for $25 and got 7 books out of it!

I got one for Christmas and I really do like it. I would find it hard to share one though, since I like to keep it in my purse to always have reading material handy.

I bought a zipperred case on Amazon that included a booklight for about $15. I wanted a case that zipped since I was going to keep it in my purse which tend to collect a lot of junk. That way I figured it would be more protected.

I have one of the original Nooks, 3G, Wifi. I have the Alice Cover (http://gifts.barnesandnoble.com/Alice-Cover-in-Paper/e/9781615598854/?cds2Pid=36189#TABS). I absolutely LOVE my Nook & cover! :goodvibes I have approximately 130 e-books right now and about 90% of those were free! All others were $5 or less, as I will not buy for more than that right now. I actually just purchased The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo on Tuesday for $5 through my Nook at work. :) Can't wait to read it! I have not yet looked for library books because I'm quite busy enough with the library I've built so far. The charge lasts forever and I love how I can carry so many books with me wherever I go. I seriously do not use my Nook for the internet - even though it's there if I want to. Similarly, I do not use it for music. I have an Ipod for music and a computer for internet. So I really just purchased this to carry my books - and it serves that purpose wonderfully. The battery lasts forever, too. :thumbsup2

Does B&N send you special promotions so you can get good deals on books? I will not us it for the Internet. So y'all think it would be hard to share? Well, we get one for now.

Last night we went to Barnes and Noble so that I could buy the Nook. (after over-researching the heck out of it) I've got the Nook app on my HTC, so after reading off the phone, I wanted something a little bigger. So we get there, and the man says "let me show you the Nook Color.
Awwww crap. :lmao: After seeing the Nook Color, that was the end of that.

And here's the kicker. My DH, who wasn't interested in a Nook, ALSO BOUGHT ONE. :goodvibes Well, we played w/ them last night and it's SOOOO awesome.

If you only need it for reading, get the regular Nook. But if you look at the Nook Color and see all that it can do....you'll be hooked. You can download movies, music, other books in PDF format, get color magazines (and the subscriptions are pretty cheap) and of course, you can read your books. I'm SO glad we went w/ the Nook color. I think I'd have been second guessing my decision. It's touch screen, VERY easy to navigate....and on that line...I thought it was much easier to navigate than the regular Nook. The regular Nook isn't a touchscreen and was a little more confusing to maneuver. I'm sure w/ practice it would have been just fine though.

If you can afford to upgrade by $100 to the color, I would highly recommend it.

Is the Nook color like an IPad? If I get the nook color and I am reading a book, will it be backlit? Thanks everyone!

Another lover of the Nook color. I love being able to check my email, dis boards and stuff when we are on the go.

I'm sorry, one more question about borrowing from the library? Is it like a regular book? It has to be turned in by a certain date?

I just got the regular Nook for Christmas and my 13 year old dd got one too. It would be hard for us to share because I also carry mine in my purse so I always have it with me. I love it because the pages look like book pages and I can leave it in my purse all week and it's still practically fully charged.

We both have the neoprene case. It's squishy so pretty protective and it's kinda stretchy so we can tuck our nook lights into the back.

it's similar to an IPad in that it's backlit, yes. But, you can read it outside without problems if you adjust the brightness and font. (I'm looking forward to bringing it to the pool this summer !!) The big difference between the 2 (other than size) is that you can't download apps (they told us that was coming soon though since it's Android based) and you cannot work on Excel spreadsheets or word docs. (they're read only)

Tonight we're going to play around w/ downloading movies to the NookColor and downloading our music. ( it comes w/ Pandora Radio but you can download music and make it an Mp3 player)

As far as borrowing the books, we haven't found where you can do that, but reviews that we read said that when the book is "due" it is just shut off from your Nook. (so it's never "late") I'm looking forward to the borrow feature. (once we find out how).

barnes and Noble also has alot of free NookBooks you can download. And I found yesterday, a ton that are under $ 5.00. (that are actually GOOD ones!) ;) I'm telling you, the only drawback we've found is that you won't put it down !!!

I got a 'regular' nook for Christmas and I love it! I don't think I'd like to have the color, because I like the e-ink, it not being backlit.
B&N regularly has Free Fridays when different books are free, or really cheap. It may or may not be something you want, but you're not risking anything by trying them.
I haven't borrowed from my library yet, but here's a link to a nook forum that has information, including the ins and outs of library borrowing.
I love to play Sudoku too, which is on the nook.
The one thing I've found is that I don't like reading a lot of non-fiction on it. Ex.-I bought the Unofficial Guide for WDW. But I want to flip around a lot and it can get frustrating on the nook (or any e-reader for that matter).
I'm not sure what case I have-it was part of the gift. But its an 'official' cover, and opens like a book. The nook clips into it, so its not possible for it to fall out.

Thank you all! I will go this weekend and tinker around with it! I think I'll look at the regular nook because we have an iPad and I don't like to read on it.

I was so torn between the nook and kindle and finally decided on the nook for Christmas and love it! I got a cover from B&N with the heart and peace sign on it. Love that two. I love being able to bring it everywhere. I don't have many books on it yet but plan to add more soon. I think I would have a hard time sharing it though. I am very happy with it and think you would be too.

They automatically aren't available on your nook (or computer) after the check out period is up. The check out period varies by library. I have access to 3 different systems. One is 14 days. One is 21 days. And the the 3rd you can choose how long you want it either 7 days, 14 days or 21 days.

I know that The Philadelphia Free Library allows memberships for out of state residents. It is $15 a year and from what I understand they have a large selection of ebooks to borrow.

This is one of the best ones with the biggest selections. If there is a wait list for the books, it goes faster than you think.

I also use my local libraries. They don't have a great selection, but I can usually find enough to interest me. I would check out the libraries in your area. I even use my mom's card number to check out ebooks from her county because the ebooks you check out can't be late so she won't get any fees if I use it.
