We have an old--but big and comfortable--tent that we got awhile ago, before water-proof tents were popular.
We've had experiences before when we were practically rained out of our tent. That being said, we're really worried about our tentative vacation to Fort Wilderness this August. Any tips for staying dry? What are our chances of getting rained out? (I understand that it only rains for an hour or so a day...right?)

I can't say what it's like there that time of year in terms of rainfall (but do know that July is pretty subject to daily rain storms). However, I would certainly try to prepare in some way to waterproof! I'd probably start with a spray-on water proofer, and some good seam sealer. Give it at least two coats. Then I'd also look into getting a tarp that will cover the tent and work out a system of rigging that up over it. I've seen some pretty elaborate tarp-over-tent set ups in my camping experience! I just think that at time of year in Florida (read: humidity), if you risk getting soaked through, you will just never dry out!

I've seen folks stretch the "Big Blue" tarp with grommet holes in the corners over a tent and tie it off to trees with twine or bungee cords at a slight angle so rain water drains off. It's not elegant, it's not pretty, but I think it keeps most rain off unless it's windy. Also, a good tarp or groundcloth between the tent and your sand pad is good. Just make sure you tuck any protrusions under the tent. If you dont, the rain runs down the tent, onto your tarp and under the tent. Hello puddles!

I'm glad there are some camping purists left out there!
