Non Park/Restaurant Character interactions?

DH is meeting a dear friend on our arrival day a WDW - we plan on having some pool/watermice fun when when we arrive and then DH and friend are planning on going to WWS to see TBBs practice. My DSs 3 & 7(if they aren't napping) are probably going to want to see something fun, but I hate to take them to a park on the first day without their dad.

Is there anywhere I can take them to find characters or just for some fun without having DH miss out on their first experiences with WDW?

You can take them to Downtown Disney. There will most likely be no characters there, but there are some wonderful stores with lots of Disney merchandise and character statues. There are also great restaurants and snack stops. It is a very fun place!
