I do not fly very often. We found good prices for flights for our trip in 2 weeks on Southwest. My college age son just got a summer job and may not be able to go with us. What happens if I have to cancel his flight?

with southwest you would receive a credit that he could use for travel within one year of the date of purchase unless you buy the more expensive refundable fare

In addition to what the pp wrote I would add that if your unsure you could book him separately from the rest of the family. IMHO this just makes it easier to cancel and or re-book. My dd's are both in college and I have found booking us all separately these days works best for me in case of changes/cancellations.
