We are thinking about buying non expire tix next year. We bought them in 2005 and are going to be out of days after this vacation in September. My question is if I buy my 8yr old son a 10day non expire ticket and only use 3days what happens to the seven remianing days since he will be 9yrs old the next time he uses the tickets. Do I pay to change them to the 9yr and older tix or are they worthless?
So are non expire tix a bad idea because of his age?

I would not worry about his age and leave the ticket as is.

well as far as i know the adult price is not til they turn 10. so if you are going back when child is 9, you should be fine. However, if child turns 10, i think you can just upgrade for small amount on the future trips. But i think as long as you activate it before they are 10 then you might be fine for future trips without paying. Maybe someone can confirm.;)

Disneyfan2 is correct it is after 10 years for an adult ticket. I can answer your question though. DD was 9 when we bought and used her 10 day non-expiring ticket. This year she was 10 when we had days left over, so we went to guest relations turned in her child ticket and they gave us an adult one free of charge.

The unused day on a child's ticket can be upgraded to an adult ticket for no charge in the future (provided that the person was a child when it was first used).

Per Cheshire Figment's Everything About WDW Tickets:

Disney does not penalize children for growing older. If you have a partially used child's ticket, and the child is now 10 or older, you may exchange the child's ticket for an adult ticket with the same remaining entitlements and no charge.

The child for which this is being done must be present at the ticket window when this is being done. The age difference must be reasonable! For example, if the child appears to still be a pre-teen, and the ticket is two or more years old they should be no problem. However, if the child appears to be 16 and the ticket is only a year old this will not be done.

This applies whether the ticket is MYW or pre-MYW.

However, if the ticket has never been used, the ticket may only be upgraded to a ticket with at least the same entitlements and the guest must pay the difference.
