Complete noob to all things DVC. The wife and I are crunching the numbers to see if it's worthwhile to join up.

One of my questions is about the value of using the non-DVC resorts. I'm sure we'll be using Disney especially in the beginning, have a DD of 6 months. But down the road, I think I would use it more for non-DVC. But is it a waste of points? Does the value hold up for that usage?

Do you mean non-DVC resorts at Disneyworld? Or do you mean trading out of DVC into the RCI timeshares?

Neither are an economical use of DVC points, however.

Thanks for the response.

The RCI timeshares. I would be trying to take a decent amount of abroad trips in the future. Howcome they're not considered a good use? Are there any good threads or sites that do the number crunching? I wasn't sure how to search for something like this question.

I have used my points outside DVC mainly for concierge collection. These resorts were 5 star and well worth my points IMO. They do seem to be taking alot of the good resorts off the list though, so you cannot count on these resorts being there in the future.

RCI point values can change, as they are negotiated from time to time. Currently, at 160 ponts for most weeks in a one bedroom trade, the point value isn't as good as use for a DVC stay, but it isn't awful for an occasional trade, every few years. It is not a good trade value if it will be your primary use of points.

Really the best value of any timeshare is in the use of it within their specific system of resorts, like Marriott to Marriott or Hilton to Hilton.

Most do not consider it wise use of points & recommend better & usually less expensive timeshares to consistently travel outside of DVC resorts
( do a search on Mousecellaneous for Wyndham, there were recently threads on purchasing this & comparing it to DVC ). Personally we've never used our points outside of DVC resorts but are looking at Wyndham as a possible for vacations in addition to our DVC.

As to RCI; prior to switch to RCI DVC was using II & it is possible that in future DVC may go with II or other again instead of RCI. I cannot speak to the value or lack of trading through RCI first hand. But here are some things to keep in mind; there's $95 transaction fee & any change to the reservation brings another fee of $95, booking & cancellation guidelines may vary from those for booking DVC resorts. And, just to give you bit of idea, in RCI's High Season for their Signature Selection Resorts 1 week (7 consecutive nights) is 600 pts for 1 bedroom & 900 pts for 2 bedroom.

Best wishes :goodvibes

Thanks for the thoughts. Seems like I'd be better off just renting my points and surfing for deals for abroad vacations then.

We have been doing just this successfully for the last seven years. It takes a little more time, and renting is never a guarantee (although we have had no problems and if you browse through the DVC rent boards, you will find very few complaints/problems). We do spend 75% of our vacation time at WDW or DL, so we primarily use our points for ourselves. However, it is nice to have the option to rent, and renting DVC points seems to always be in demand.
