Non-Disney hotel stay observation...

This isn't an agree/disagree thread, simply an observation from a recent stay at a hotel, far, far away from WDW.

-1 nt. at VA Beach Hilton Ocean front, city view (parking garage view)
-parlor room that was sooo tiny it had a full sized Murphy bed (didn't know they
still existed)
-$7 self parking, $14 valet, per day, no other option at all, you simply pay to
park
-pay for wifi

When all said and done, we paid $312 for one night., the room was extremely small and nothing special at all. There was a very small rooftop pool that was only accessible to guests that stay at club level, no other pool option for the everyone else. I know this is what they consider to be peak season at a beachfront hotel, but it was so not worth it.

I know it all comes down to personal opinion, so okay, agree or disagree.

JMO, but Va. Beach is horrible area to compare Disney too. They have an almost non-existent luxury market and what they do have is very overpriced. Also, very few hotels total for an ocean front market. I would compare it more with Daytona Beach area hotels although there is a larger market there for luxury accom. rather than Va. Beach.

I completely agree that the Hilton there is nothing special. Frankly, as long as it was clean you are doing well for that area, most of the hotels are aging and not gracefully.

I have heard the Town Center area is nicer but not on the ocean and I have not stayed there since they finished construction on that area. I believe they were building a Westin there but for some reason as I mentioned the area hotels always seem to be poorly managed.

Curious to hear what you thought of the beach ?

1) OK it is an observation.
2) But, it really has no comparison to WDW.
3) VA Beach
. . . is a old vacation area
. . . the land is very limited
. . . the beach property is prime space for hotels
. . . older hotels have smaller rooms
. . . the price is high to the to popularity of the area

4) NOW, If you want a comparison, try Downtown London, England
. . . just enough room for two twin beds and one night stand
. . . some bath rooms are common
. . . can easily be €150-€250 ($185-$315) per night for a tiny room
. . . if you want a Holiday Inn room size, it can be €250-€450 ($310-$550) per night
. . . taxes are up to 25% of the room rate

NOTE: All this shows is that regardless of where, you can always find
good or bad comparisons to WDW rooms rates.

We LOVE the Poly but that's why we are staying at the Dolphin upcoming trip!

June 2012 - MGM Grand "deluxe" room - Foxwoods Casino, CT
Room was nice, but no bigger than the room we had at WL
View over the pool.
$389/night

It actually makes me feel good about the $379/$412 per night we're paying for our Poly CL room next year....because I know that staying on Disney property has sooooooo much value for us.

I'm not sure why this is on the resorts thread?? You can compare anything to anything, but I don't really see what virginia beach and Disney have in common to comapre them. ( Is it just me?? )

We got a cheaper rate staying in San Antonio on the River..... but I don't know that I'd compare that to our stay at Disney.

I'm not sure of the point of the thread either, but it certainly made me feel better about the prices I pay at Disney!

I only made my POLY comparison because it seems that Disney can really over-estimate their product sometimes, IMO.

Our past POLY stays before we went to Hawaii and we got a Sept. (both times) rate at the POLY for less than $250 a night.

I doubt I will ever be able to talk DH into paying $400+ to stay there again and it looks like they are really decreasing their discounts.

Guess I will get to visit when we eat at Ohana this trip.

It's kind of an apples and oranges comparison. Different areas, states, etc.

We had a 1 night pre WDW pkg room at the dtd Doubletree, 1 bedroom suite with fridge, microwave and cusinart coffee maker with Starbucks. The bedroom had 2 queens, living room a queen? Pull-out. This was $79 for the night, with mousesavers discount and incl breakfast (cold). Compare this to the All Sports fam suite?

But, even DTD hotels just don't have the same feeling as WDW resorts. As much as I thought it was a great hotel, (ESP for the price if you are a larger family, there was only 2 of us) we looked forward to checking into POR and BC, split stay.
