We have 7 day park passes and are staying for 10 nights...we will have 2 full days without disney passes and would like to rent a car for a day and go on a day trip. It would be me, my DH and my DD - age 4. Any ideas? Maybe suggest a great beach...any suggestions would be great!

...upgrade to 9 days and go to the park! :)

Seriously - if you look at the cost to upgrade the two extra days, it would probably be about $20 total for all three of you. You can also wait till the end of the trip to add days.

We always like to have one or two non-park days (and our trips are usually 8-10 nights). It's nice to sleep in a little, hang out by the pool, maybe go to Downtown Disney for dinner & still get to bed reasonably early to be well rested for the park the next day.

Not sure about beach recommendation, but that's something we would like to do on our next trip, so hopefully there will be some good recommendations! ;)

A relative of mine used to live in the St. Petersburg area and I really enjoyed the beach the time I went to visit her there. IIRC, it was about an hour from Orlando (we went to US and Epcot) and if you do not want to consider a big park there such as Busch Gardens, a Tampa resident told me recently that the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa is a real GEM (and AAA agrees)! I wouldn't mind checking that out myself...

I 2nd the zoo in Tampa...it's awesome!

You could have an easy day and just do fun things like play miniature golf.

Drive over to the Space Center.

You could hit a beach on the east coast...and maybe visit the Daytona Speedway while over there.

This place is fun too The old spanish sugar mill in deland (sorry, i can't post links yet so just google it) You have a griddle in your table and make your own pancakes.

A few years ago we went to Cocoa Beach for the weekend to avoid park madness and had the best time hanging out at the beach. We ate at a restaurant that had a great view of the cruise ships leaving and my DS was just amazed by all of that.

I would really love to hear more about the Tampa zoo! We are flying home from Tampa, but do not have to be at the airport until 6 pm. I know my husband would be less stressed if we spent the day in Tampa instead of having to drive there during rush hour traffic from Orlando!

We visited the Tampa Zoo last Nov. It is a cute zoo...we're zoo members so it was free. I thought the regular tix prices were a bit high.

We were meeting family at the airport. Our flight got in at 11, theirs at 2. We went over to the zoo for a nice few hours. The zoo is very close to the airport.

We went to water park (Typhoon lagoon) and Disney quest. We had good time at the water park and actually come back to Disney quest another day.

In Orlando/Sanford, there is the Central Florida Zoo. On weekends, you can sign up for a special event to feed the elephants. The zoo is small enough to walk through in an afternoon. And they also have a splash park (included in admission) where your DD can run around and cool down. They have face painting and a cafe for snacks or lunch. They also have ZOOm Adventures - with zip lines, suspended disks, etc. And a train ride and carousel for the kids. The admission is $12 per adult and $8 for kids 3-12 yo. They also participate in zoo memberships - so if you are a member of your local zoo, you may get a discount or free admission. The zoo is located off of I-4 exit 104 (about an hour drive from Disney).

We're members of our local zoo, which is reciprocal with both the Tampa and the Central Florida zoo, so if you're not zoo members you might see what the local zoo charges for memberships and if they're reciprocal. We've got five kids, so memberships often make more sense for us than buying tickets, but if you've only got two kids and travel a bit the zoo card can end up paying for itself as well.

The "beach hunter" site has reviews of many Florida beaches and I know there's a nice one in Cocoa beach that has a (shaded) nature trail that sounded good to me (Lori Wilson park). There's also a little Astronaut memorial there that might be a nice break in the heat of the day (Astronaut Memorial Planetarium and Observatory). Not far from Cocoa Beach is Melbourne, with the Brevard Zoo, which gets terrific reviews. Cocoa Beach and Daytona Beach are closer than Tampa, but some people much prefer the Gulf to the Atlantic.

There's a science center in Orlando proper, that might be worth checking out if you have a membership that'll get you in for free, but it gets mixed reviews so I wouldn't go if you have to pay full price. The Henry P. Leu Gardens should have a ton of stuff in bloom around then, and there's a free half-day once a week, Monday mornings I think, which would be good if your four year old is okay with that sort of thing. What I'd love to do is the Tiffany exhibit at the Charles Morse Museum, but there aren't many 4 yos who'd like that. :p

Some friends of ours spend their "off day" checking out the biggest McDonald's in the world and doing Downtown Disney - the Lego store in particular. Which wouldn't be a non-Disney day in my book, but whatever. Oh, and Farris and Foster's has Chocolate making nights, where you buy a pound of chocolate you can make however you want - mold or mix or dip or whatnot. I think family night is Monday, but check their website.

Depending on your interests....

-Kennedy Space Center
-Shopping at DTD
-Clearwater Beach
-Daytona 500 Experience (can do the beach too if you want)
-Airboat Ride, combined with some swimming at the resort/hotel, etc.

We have done or are doing all of the above except KSC. I know a lot of people like to take a down day and do nothing, but I can't do that on vacation. I figure I only get to go like every other year (if we went more it might be different), so I want to see and experience as much as I possibly can while I'm there. I can rest at home ;)

We are heading to Disney in 6 weeks!:woohoo:

We are going to Clearwater Beach for one day and catching a Tampa Bay Rays baseball game that night. Tickets for the 4 of us were $75. We thought it would be a lot of fun for the kids to catch a MLB game after hanging out at the beach.:cool2:

My son is 4 1/2. I told him to a game on his 3rd birthday. He had so much fun because they had a whole kids area for him to play games and he posed for a baseball card picture.
