I just spent about an hour cruising for a cute backpack for my 8 yr old
DD and it seems impossible. She is no longer into characters but is still a little girl. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look?

Land's End and LL Bean have very cute girls backpacks. DD got hers already for next year (my baby starts kindergartenin the fall!) from Bean.

Check out some of LL Bean's junior backpacks.

try a department store like mervyns or jc penny's-but go to the area that would carry them for adults.

we have this problem not because my kids don't like characters but because their private school is very restrictive on what can be imprinted on them (no fantasy, heros, villians-pretty much eliminates most of the boy's ones and loads of the girls).

Any dept store has the non character ones. Last year (second grade) my daughter was "to old" for a backpack- all the kids were carrying messenger bags.

La Senza girl....

My DD8 LOVES theirs, and this is where we bought last years, and surely where we will buy this years.

Target has some in their sporting goods section.

LL Bean is hands down the place for backpacks. Different colors and sizes and their packs have some durability.

Children's Place has cute backpacks that are not characters. DD (4th grade last year) got a cheetah print one last year that still looks BRAND NEW! And she took it every day! I think it was less than $20. Also had matching lunch boxes but they were all sold out. Shop early!

Good quality and Good price! Can't beat that combo!

Another one sitting on the LLBean couch. Their backpacks are the best.

Try your search again in a week or two. A LOT of back to school merchandise is flowing though our distribution center right now and will be pouring in to the stores next week.

We got the junior sized LLBean backpack for DS to use at preschool last year. I told DH that DS will be using it for years to come because it shows no wear and tear at all! They have some prints and a lot of solid colors. :thumbsup2

I'm getting ready to put our junior backpack on Ebay. Its the original backpack in lime green if anyone is interested. Should probably put it up in the next couple of days. Its brand new and never been used, still with tags. Not looking to make a killing, just want what I paid for it (it was on sale for $13 - they usually run $25!)

Gymboree, Children's Place, Limited Too

I second the Children's Place suggestion. We have the lunch boxes too. They hold up pretty well, but my younger DD (8) isn't to hard on them either.

My older DD (12) could destroy anything. I'm trying to convince her to get one from LL Bean, or Land's End. Luckily, her school says backpacks, and no messenger bags, so that is great.

up until last year, DD got character backpacks from Disney, Target, etc - this last year she picked out a purple one made by Greatland at J C Penneys - I was reluctant because I wasn't familar with the brand. It has been a great surprise - it is the first backpack to actually make it through a school year!!! Not only that but it has made it through without even showing wear!!!

I love the Gap - but one year bought a flowery one there - it did not hold up to wear on the edges.

Also love Lands End and LL Bean....jusy have never bought one for schoool...and I have a Jansport that is holding up very well! I use it for summer activites like picnics and summer festivals - and sometimes Disney when I need to carry more.

We just bought the first non-character lunch box at Limited 2 - we'll see how that does!!!

:)
