My ASD son just turned 10 and has been wearing his noise dampening headphones for many years now at WDW. He prefers the Kidz Bandz. I like the bandz because they collapse/fold in a manner that makes them compact and allows me to slip them onto the strap of my crossbody bag. This is much easier for him to advocate for himself when he needs them, and it allows me quick access to pass them to him instead of having to grab them out of a backpack.
For him, it's not about silencing the environment in regards to a ride like RnR coaster. They dampen the ambient noise enough that it's not overwhelming, still allows him to hear some of the background music, and most importantly does not block our the voices of his parents if we need to speak to him. Having an over the ear headphone works best for him because part of his sensitivity is feeling "protective" of his ears in loud situations. That in part is why we have not tried noise protection you insert into your ear....which would drive him batty to feel anyhow with his sensory sensitivities.
He's worn them in every closed environment that bothers him the most such as indoor queues, noisy restaurants, rides, or if the proximity of a vocal baby/toddler is bothering him. ;-) The shoulder restraints on RnR coaster do not present ANY problem at all for his headphones, and in fact stabilize his head more than if he wasn't wearing any ear protection.
