No See Ums

Last summer we were at VB and got ATTACKED by no see ums. This year I want to be prepared. Does anyone know if these bugs are a problem at Cape Canaveral or at WDW?

Also, last year we used Deep Woods Off. Are there any better ways to keep them away (the kids hated the off). Will Skin-So-Soft work?

Yes you will definitely find them at cape Caveral - for the same reason you find them at VB - they can't spray.....

too many manialla and other lifewild use this area was a sanction.

We had no problems with them at all when we were there last year we stayed at the Holiday inn in Cocoa Beach and never got one bite not even the kids.

I was told by someone here on the boards a while back that Skin So Soft does work for these pesky buggars. Other people here says that only repellant with DEET (I think that is what the ingrediant is) in it will work. Unfortunately, that was too late for me and I got around 40 bites per leg while at VB one summer evening (I had used OFF that trip). I have never been bitten by these guys at WDW; can't say anything about Cape Canaveral.

I'm not an east-coaster. What are these no see ums? We have chiggars here (nearly invisible tiny red bugs), but never heard of no see ums except on these boards. Are they just in the sand? Do we need to be concerned at all at BCV?

They are little tiny mosquito-like bugs that you really can't see. (At least I could never get ahold of one) they seem to come out in the evening and they will drive you nuts!!

Last year someone at VB told me to get hunter's version of Off becuase it is stronger (no luck finding it at the WalMart in Sebastian) but I am not sure I want to use that on my children. I was hoping for a more "natural" product to keep the bugs away.

On a trip to Thailand 3 years or so ago I got particularly badly bitten. I was wearing insect repellent at the time which only seemed to attract them, I also tried some kind of citronella spray, which again only seemed to attract them

Eventually someone told me that the only thing that will stop you getting bitten is a really strong insect repellent, especially one with a high concentration of DEET in it.

So off I went to purchase some and it worked like a treat. We have since travelled to Asia on a few occassions and I never travel without it.

Skin so soft insect repellant worked for us, and is safer than Deet. There are natural insect repellant, but we haven't tried them. Skin so soft comes in sunscreen form as well. Makes a big difference.

No See Um's Really Bite!

As far as the theme park goes you will be attacked by the friendly neighborhood mosquito now & then. But it's really not bad.

We stayed right on the water at OKW and never had a serious problem when we sat out on the balcony late at night. We did spray ourselves a lot, but that seemed to keep them away for the most part. Just a minor bite now & then.

Isn't the mosquito the Florida state bird?

If these little bugs are attracted to you, believe me - it is no joke! They can be horrible, but they are selective as to who they bite. The rest of my family has no problem, but they chew me to pieces, regardless of what I spray myself with.

Sand Flea's is what I believe you're referring to.

I lived in GA for a brief time and they were horrible. As others have mentioned, the only thing that worked for me was the Avon Skin-So-Soft. It seems to repell them.

I can assure you they are not the mid-atlantic chigger, but can be just as annoying.

Use caution with the DEET, it shouldn't be applied directly to the skin and remember to "only use as directed."

We get them up here too. They are incredibly tiny black bugs that do bite.

I will also chime in that the skinsosoft type of repellants won't work so well on them, something with deet is the only thing to guaranteed repel them

What time of the year are no-see-ums a pest at WDW?

You really don't find them at WDW or at least I have never had any problems. They are at VB. We weren't bothered by them in May a couple of years ago. We really never used anything but we were not out at night. I guess from the post that different thing work for different people. I think I will take several kinds when we go this May.

Eldest DD and I get bitten by anything and everything (youngest DD and DH aren't touched ).

Whilst no-where near as bad as on the coast, we have sometimes been bitten in WDW on our October trips - I remember trying to swat the no-seeums away one evening in MK waiting for the parade, and wandering around outside at AKL after dusk was really impossible without looking completely demented waving my arms around trying to get rid of them!

We haven't yet found a really effective repellant, but we're still trying!

We lived in GA for 8 years and had to deal with them all the time.
They were really bad in the summer.
What we found really worked was skin-so -soft.
But also, do not wear ny perfume.,scented shampoo, or scented deodarnt(sp?)
