Can you keep these no-see-ums at bay with a bug spray like OFF, and are they more active at night or do the prefer to eat during the day??

Thanks.

My DW and I discovered they were very active late afternoon & early evening. What worked for us was Avon's Skin So Soft. Put a thick layer on and the no-see-ums can't get a good grip! ;)

I am worried now about the trip DD and I are taking July 7. She is allergic to mosquito bites. Are no-see-um bites anything like mosquito bites? Is this the real name for these bugs? I have never heard of these before, all we have in ND are mosquitoes as big as helicopters.

I have got to be the no-see-um queen.:( They eat me up when no one else gets a bite. To make it worse I'm allergic to any insect bites. They always get infected. We stay on Sanibel for 4 months or so in the winter and it has to be the no-see-um and mosquito capital of the nation.

My far the best thing I have found is Florida Swamp Spray repellant and take an histamine (I take it only at night because it makes me too sleepy) to keep them from getting so infected.

Skintastic works too. It uses Deet (sp?).

It would be great to find a more natural insect repellant. My undertanting is that an alergic reaction to insect repelant can have bad consequences.

No see ums are also called sand gnats.
I lived in SE GA for 8 years and learned to live with them.
A big piece of advice is NOT to wear ANYTHING scented.

Perfume
hair spray
shampoo
deodarnt.
They are VERY attracted to the oils and scents in those products.
The bites hurt like Heck and itch really bad.
Skin so soft does a good job.
They like to hang out at dusk.

Boy, that sounds familiar. We spent 10 days in Sanibel this May, and I absolutely got annhilated by those things. I finally went to Jerry's Supermarket, and asked a guy stocking the shelves what the locals do. He recommended Florida Swamp Spray; he said it's what city issues to the guys working on the road crews. I figured if it was good enough for them, it was good enough for me. It's some really strong, stinky stuff, but it does work.

Are those the bugs that cause big, ithcy, oozy bites? They got me good in January, but mostly when I was sitting waiting for a parade. My legs and arms provided a banquet for them--and I paid for days!

Glad to hear Skintastic works! What about bitting flies? Was at dds' softball game tonight and got eaten alive! Tried every repellant we had, Cutter, Off, Skintastic - didn't matter. DH thought it was hillarious as he wasn't getting bit at all!

We'll be there Aug 14 - 24. Wouldn't want to ruin our trip. DD is on antibiotics right now due to a nasty insect bite:(

Avon now makes a new product called Bug Gaurd Plus. It is in the Skin-So-Soft line of products. It is an insect repellant as well as an SPF 30 waterproof sunblock and its is a non-greasy moisturizer. Its awsome stuff, we used it last time we were there in April and we didn't get bit like we did the previous time we were there. It says on the bottle it "repels against mosquitoes, deer ticks, black flies, gnats, no-seeums and biting midges" and to top it all off you get a sunblock too! My understanding of the no-seeums is that they come out mostly in the early AM hours and in the evening, I just applied the Bug Gaurd first thing in the morning and then again 1/2 way through the day.

Are people having trouble with no-see-ums at WDW? We have been there many time in the summer with no problems at all. But boy when we were at Vero 2 years ago they were horrible at night. The Deep Woods Off that one of the CMs gave me worked pretty good. It's funny how they seem to attack certain people. They really go after me and my oldest DD. But my husband and my youngest DD weren't affected much at all. None of us were wearing any fragrances either.
