Just back and wondering why there are so very very very few recycling trash cans at the World - here and there I found a plastic and glass one, but overall, very very few. It would seem that if WDW is so environmentally conscious, they would be all over the place! I hate throwing my plastic water bottles in the regular trash, as at home we meticulously recycle. Anyone know why? :confused3

The reason is because it's part of the magic.

Disney actually employs people to sort through the trash and remove all of the recyclables from the garbage.

Learned that on the Keys to the Kingdom tour. :)

We went on the Keys to the Kingdom tour and learned that, too! They actually have employees who go through ALL of the trash and sort it. I thought that was really kind of cool, although I would NOT want that job.

At DVC resorts, they give you a recycling trash can and ordinary trash can. They have both recycling and non-recycling trash rooms if you fill up the trash can before housekeeping comes.

They do it big time. You just don't see it happen. Sometimes you will see trashcans with bottle shaped holes in the top for plastic bottles (water, soda, etc).

Knowing Disney, I know that has to be true.

Disney even uses recycled paper to create their wrapping paper for breakables. You have probably seen the "meshy" like paper that they wrap things in the gift shops. I don't remember the percentage, but our tour guide said Disney had one of the highest levels of recycling in the country. I just think that the bottomless trash can was one of Walt's best ideas!

That's really interesting - I did see the bottle shaped ones here and there - wonder why they would make employees go through the trash rather than have more bottle shaped ones? Probably because not all visitors would be sure to deposit in the right cans. This certainly answered my question - thanks!

I have a friend who had the job of sorting the trash. Also, you may notice in some places (Downtown Disney for instance) that there will be 2 trash cans... one for recycling and one for regular trash.

Darn,
I was hoping it was because they realized most recycling is a waste.

Ok, this will most likely sound very stupid, but where I live we have no recycling bins so... What should I be putting in the recycling bin in our room? Paper? Plastic? I'm ashamed to say we pretty much stuffed anything in it last time we visited SSR... :guilty:

The bulk of refuse/recycable separation is done mechanically at the processing center on property. It's called 'the murf' (more accurately, the Materials Recovery Facility) which is a 150 ton per day processing center.

I have seen so many visitors tossing trass wherever they want I can't imagine those people recycling.
I also thought "where are the containers for recycling" but then when I see people drop a cup on the ground when they are less than 2 ft from a can I understood.
Did you know Disney did research once to see how far a person would walk with garbage looking for a container. That is why they have garbage cans spaced approximately every ten feet. I guess with the lacsidasical mindset of so many people now they should space them ever 5 ft. Or manybe line the sidewalks with a trough to toss the garbage in. It is really a shame.
I do lok for the trash cans, and use them, and make sure my group does too. Hope all of you do, but I know all DIS people love the parks and would do nothing to harm them. Peggie
