No pizza in Italy??

I always wondered why there is no counter service in Italy selling pizza or other italian food. Does anyone here know why I can get a croissant in France, fried dough in America, nachos in Mexico, baklava in Morocco........but no calzone in Italy?? Or have I kept walking by it for the past 10 years!!??

My mom said the same thing on her first visit to Epcot. She just couldn't believe there wasn't a pizzeria in Italy. They could also use a REAL bakery like France and Norway.

Maybe Disney wants us to go the Boardwalk and get one from Spoodles. But of course that restaurant is being replaced by fall of this year, so maybe it's time Italy added pizza!

Maybe if Italy sold a very good authentic pizza then no one would ever buy the regular pizza from Disney (yuk)!

My husband and I were just talking about this this weekend. We think they should add a CS in Italy. A really good pizza joint wwould be awesome. lol

I do remember getting a croissant in france it was hot with butter...it was scrumtious!..mmmm wish I had one right now (can you tell Im on a diet for my vacation?) sigh..6 weeks to go and 20lbs to lose..I need a miracle. (mental note to self..stop reading the food threads)

I totally agree! I'm from a huge Italian neighborhood in Philly, and I live off pizza. In Disney I never noticed it was missing until I desparately craved it! I have bad stomach issues, and it's one of the only things I can eat, and it was nowhere to be found! I trudged all the way over to America to get a pretzel instead! I definitely think Italy is in need of pizza.

I think that they don't have a CS pizza place because real italian pizza is nothing like the pizza we eat in America. So if they had started with authentic pizza, people would have most likely complained, and in the end we would have ended up with the same (icky in my opinion) wdw pizza available in many other places.

Or it could be that was one of the many corners cut when they started running out of cash when constructing the WS.

Yeah thats a good point! When I was looking at the allears menu for the Tutto kiosk I thought it would be more than coffee and pastries , you would think Italy would try to blow all that ameranized pizza out the window they're line would always be full I think! And I think France could use a better CS too all the other countries have good CS counterparts -the meals are complete not just croissants and pastries

I make trips to Italy about every two years. Pizza parlors are not as prolific in Italy as they are in the States (you usually find them in cafes and some restaurants). Although, the pizza I have had there blows anything away that you could get in the States (and that is saying alot since I live in Manhattan and used to good NY pizza). I think it would be very hard to replicate pizza from Italy in Epcot's world showcase...unless they import fresh cheese and tomatoes from the motherland, I would probably be sorely depressed.

When we were at F&W this past October the booth in Italy had pizza and it was very good. They should offer it year round.

I couldn't agree more. I think many families that come to the park and see that there is pizza would expect your typical "New York" style pizza (lots of cheese and grease). However they (more likely the kids) would end up confused/mad when they received traditional Neapolitan pizza (fresh sliced buffalo mozzarella, tomato sauce, basil, and olive oil), which doesn't taste like "pizza parlor" pizza.

With that said I think there should be a CS in Italy, maybe (as someone mentioned) a panini stand that has Italian cured meats and cheeses for the sandwiches.

It's a good theory, but I doubt that authenticity is a factor. The Chinese, Mexican, and Japanese dishes served in the WS are far from authentic -- they've all been "Americanized" to suit our palates and incorporate ingredients that are widely accepted (i.e., they wouldn't serve porpoise or whale meat in Japanese dishes) and easy to acquire here.

Given that the San Angel Inn serves Tostitos, and all of WDW passes Nescafe off as "coffee" , I can't imagine someone at Disney being concerned about the "realism" of a slice of pepperoni pizza.

To get the authentic pizza, you would have to use mozzarella from a water buffalo. Would be too expensive and as you said, too many people would complain about the plainly flavored stewed tomato style sauce and the lack of cheese.

I would, but then I at the thought of us wanting Americanized Cantonese food. All we can get here is the real non-cantonese food and I don't care for it .
