No personal Segways at WDW

This is sort of an interesting discussion. Recently on some show (maybe on TechTV or Discovery or something similar) they were talking about the Segway (or as they called them "personal transportation devices") and they showed one being used at Epcot by a CM. The comment was that they wouldn't be surprised to see a sea of these at amusement parks in the future. Oh I hope not! Glad to hear that WDW is going to limit their use.

:earsgirl:

They do have them on the Disney cruise ships for passengers to try. I know, I paid the $15 and got to ride one for 10 minutes!

They are a little scary at first but within a couple of minutes you get the hang of it. I had no problem zooming around the main atrium on the Wonder. Normally they do it up on the sports deck but it was raining so they brought them in. The Segway has gyroscopes which keep them upright and self-balanced. You simple lean forward to go foward and backwards to top or backup. Turning the handles make the Seqway turn. They are easy to get the hang of. Also, they are not "balanced" to individual users - anyone can get on and go for a spin.

The exclusive distributer is Amazon.com. They sell for $4,950 and anticipate delivery starting in March.

FYI -

Just saw a thing on my local news, the City of San Fransisco has made it illegal to use a Segway in public areas. I have a feeling others will follow so they aren't going to make there way to WDW for the general public.

Guests with Segways! Sounds like a bad combination to me!
I know we have even seen more than once one CM training another to ride them. I don't think they are quite as easy as they look.

Belle1962 - And youmay be surprised to hear that soon WDW is going to have a rollerblade marathon! I know next to nothing about it though.
DH knew of the roller blade marathon and was talking to a CM about it a few days after the running marathon last week.

It sounds like general opinion is running against Segways in the parks. For the sake of presenting a dissenting voice, I'll say that I think people with mobility problems SHOULD be allowed to use them. We all know that sometimes wheelchairs are not used just for people with mobility problems. I have seen both regular and motorized wheelchairs used by parents specifically for the convenience of their children who were too old for stollers. I can't count the number of times I've been rammed by strollers and wheelchairs, and I've been bumped numerous times by people who really had no business trying to drive a motorized vehicle. In spite of all that, I still have no trouble with people using them if they genuinely need to.

Now, if someone genuinely has trouble with walking but could use a Segway, then I say go for it. If Disney is indeed forbidding them in the parks, I think it's pretty poor of them. Fortunately we've never had to worry with trying to load up a motorized vehicle for anyone in our party, and we've never had to to try to rent one at WDW. But if we did, it looks like the Segway is far easier to pack and load than anything else I've seen. Now as for whether or not someone would risk leaving it outside an attraction while they were inside, that's another story.
