The second, larger, volcano in Iceland has begun erupting! I am still 30 days out but this is making me a wee bit nervous!

freyja, how are you and your family doing?

It is become a pain in the you know what. I'm heading to Paris end of May and guess where my layover is supposed to be?
Reykjavick Iceland. ***Yikes***

Luckily I called my TA and this would be covered under my trip insurance so at least I wouldn't lose money.
I feel for the people who are stuck in the airports.

Mother Nature is still in control.

Hmmm, MSNBC took down the BREAKING NEWS about the second volcano erupting. :confused3 Did they jump the gun?

Don't worry Europe has just re -opened his air space. We are supposed to catch a flight into Florida on Friday.

African safaris suddenly sound like great vacations. :thumbsup2

Maybe PBS should re-air Ken Burn's documentary on the U.S. National Parks. :scratchin

Someone put a lid on it -- the news story, not the volcano. ;)

Europe is a HE? :confused3

I just read on BBC that Europe is opening air space on a limited basis from some areas while others are still closed. The UK, the Netherlands and Germany are countries still shut down so far while southern Europe and much of France and Scandinavia is open or soon will be.

Is the second volcano actually erupting? Wow, it seems like the world is a bit restless lately with so many earthquakes and now the eruptions.

Germany and the Netherlands have reopened there air space as from 8.00 pm.

This is what I was able to find on another site.

UPDATE: It's apparently a false alarm. An Icelandic Broadcasting Service camera was pointed at Eyjafjallajökull but it was labeled Hekla. MSNBC picked up the breaking news item.

I thought it was because msnbc.com had:

"Breaking news: New volcanic plume indicates that larger volcano, Katla, has begun erupting" (Or something very similar, not sure of exact verbage.)

Then they took it down so I'm guessing someone was a little too quick to break the story that hasn't happened yet.

Well maybe its a she. I did not look under the skirt to be honest.:thumbsup2
O and yes in our language Europe is a he just as the US.
Should I wear a helmet if I mention this when we are "over there"? :rotfl2:

I wasn't poking fun in a mean way. Europe is so big and multi-faceted, I wouldn't know what gender to ascribe it. I was actually wondering whether the U.S. would be considered masculine or feminine. :scratchin Definitely masculine. A place like Sedona, AZ, would be feminine. Of course, it is named after the the man's wife, who founded the place. :thumbsup2

Are you French? I know the French language assigns gender to objects: un, une, elle, il.

The second volcano has not actually started erupting. However, there has been an increase in seismic activity in that area (Eyjafjallajokull and Katla are only about 8 miles apart). This has increased worries in Katla, a much larger volcano, erupting which would eject a much larger ash cloud. Every time Kull has erupted (3 known times) Katla has followed.

If Katla erupts then I would expect a lot more issues with air travel in that area.

See, I always think of the US in the feminine. :confused3

I think of the U.S as a young, petulant child, who likes to think we kind of know it all & have our act together. Always shoving the "#1 Superpower" thing at all the other countries. :p Our country was founded by rebels. :thumbsup2 (Well, the Brits called them traitors. )

We're heavily into building things up and destroying things, both strong yang energies, not a soft, nurturing feminine energy. Our homeless & our children bear the brunt of us not spending laws, legislation, dollars, time, resources on making them priorities & nurturing them.

The U.S. sounds like a young boy to me. :) (Of course my observations are colored by being in such a strongly industrialized city environment. :scratchin )

Wow.. politics arent allowed and this could turn ugly fast, so I wont say anything, just wow.....

But I was, and you made me smile so no big deal. :lmao: There lies an ocean of difference between us but if necessary I will swim it to get there. ;) I'm Dutch.

Technically countries/land masses are referred to in the feminine form.

We cal our country our "fatherland" so I guess it is different in each country.

Our CEO was supposed to leave today for a 2 week vacation to Italy. Her flights were cancelled so she's here at the office instead. What a bummer! :guilty:

Almost every country is reopening the air port. Maybe she could be lucky tomorrow.
Take a look here:

I'm thinking there is a long line to get the people stranded & involunarily camping out at the airports out of there first. Like, do rescheduling previous days flights take precident? There must be a real chaos even at the re-opened airports. :headache:
