When we first visited Ohana's in May of 2000 we knew we would want to come back on our next trip. We had great service, great food - basically all around great.

November 2004 - We were expecting a great experience for our 2nd time at Ohana's. The food was still very good but the service was extremely slow and sub-par. I leave most of the fault in our server for that as we were only a party of two and he seemed to only care about his 6 or more tables.

February 2006 - We decided to give it one more go at Ohana's as we had such good luck several years before. We chalked up the 2004 experience as bad luck on the server. Although I knew the menu had changed since our last experience that didn't really shy me away from the place. So I will go through the details of our very bad experience at Ohana's:

- Had a PS for 610 and got to the hotel at 600. Was seated within 5 minutes of check-in so things were looking good from there (thats the highlight of our dinner).

- After being seated our waiter came over within 5 minutes (still good so far) and took our drinks. Now this is where it gets bad....

- Before we got our drinks we had food coming at us from right and left, so fast that before we could even start to dig into the salad they were bringing 3 more plates of items (not complaining about the amount of food). We had literally no room on our table (was 2 adults and one toddler) to put all the plates and items but the server and his "assistant" didn't act like it should be a huge ordeal. We certainly aren't slow eaters by any means but I'm no road runner of eating.

- We truly felt rushed during the entire meal strictly by the server and his assistant. It was boom boom boom on food coming left and right.

- The food was not as good as it used to be. The "new" menu just seemed off to me **but you may see why in a few more lines below

- So we are done with our misc. plates of food and the additional meats they brought to us. At this point we just wanted to leave and were waiting on dessert and the check (which seemed slower than everything else), when one of the chef's came up to our table. He asked me what I thought of the dinner, etc. and I said you folks changed the menu right? He said yes, etc. and I mentioned that I felt like I was more on the atkins diet and the meal seemed to be lacking any carbs or vegetables. I said the only vegetble was the salad. This is when he gives me a puzzling look and asks what I thought about the vegetable stir fry? I said what vegetable stir fry? He said it usually comes out the same time with the "mashed" potatoes. I said what mashed potatoes? It was at this point that both he and I realized I was missing a large portion of our dinner that should have come somewhere in the middle of all these differing plates being thrown at us.

- During my conversation with the chef it was at this time my server comes back with dessert and I could tell the chef wanted to really give it to him. I didn't want a scene so I told him well thats ok we didn't (insisting that we don't get it now) because we were stuffed. I REALLY didn't want to see an ugly scene in front of the customers - figured it was better handled behind doors, etc.

- Dessert and check came and I do have to say the dessert was VERY good. It was like bread pudding and very tasty - really the only thing my family found tasty. We were on dining plan so our gratuity, etc. was all included. We just couldn't wait to get out of there because by this time, we were disappointed and my two year old was hungry (she wouldn't touch a thing they gave us) so we wanted to go get her something else.

In talking with the AKL concierge desk about our dining credits (there was a screw up at Le Cellier after the fact and concierge fixed it with no issues) that I mentioned Ohana's and what awful service and food was. The lady behind the desk said that she is embarassed to take any of her out of town friends there because its just bad. She states that she has gotten alot of complaints about being rushed and that it has apparently gotten worse since the popularity of the dining plan.

In any event - I have the mailing address (akl concierge provided) so that I can put in a formal complaint about the down hill trend I have personally seen this restaurant take.

Bottom line - we will NOT be going there again. :crazy2:

I think they should have given you some sort of compensation for missing part of the meal like a free breakfast.
I appreciate your post b/c today I changed our ADRs on the last night from Ohana's to Boma!

I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience, but I'm glad to hear that you are following up by sending a complaint. We also had a bad experience the one time we went to 'Ohana, and a lot of it was due to feeling rushed by our server. Our experience wasn't as bad as yours, so we didn't send a complaint, but we won't be going back to 'Ohana either.

I am watching Disney on the food channel and it showed Ohana's. I was going to book in for next vacation but.....maybe not?

the food network showed the "old" menu. Not as good anymore

It's interesting the different experiences people have at restaurants based on the night and the servers and any other number of factors.

I was at 'Ohana with my husband in December. The service was excellent and the food was great. It's definitely a place I will be sure to visit each time we are at Disney.

It's too bad you weren't able to have the same exprience we did. :sad1:

Had the same experience at Ohana for breakfast. 2003 was phenomenal. 2005 wasn't as great and last week was awful. Rushed, food was cold, server acted like she could care less and felt silly calling us 'cousins', no atmosphere in a place that has a ton of atmosphere (it that could make sense), just disappointing. I will not rush to go back even though our first 2003 meal was awesome and we couldn't wait to go back. Things have changed.

I'm still willing to give it a try as I think my DH will like the food and I see more good reviews than bad here. I agree that there are other factors involved. The time of year, the time of day and, of course, the quality/experience of the staff at the time. We will be there for 8 days/7 nights and I want to plan on eating somewhere different each day...unless we try a place that just really knocks our socks off and then we might try to return again before we leave. This trip is going to be our first and I want to make it a real learning experience, trying as many different restaurants and visiting as many different resorts as we can. It's all part of the Disney fun! :wizard:

We ate there in 2003 and feel in love! We ate there again in September of 2005 and the food was horrible. We never felt rushed though. They didn't say anything when we sat there and waiting on the fireworks. We won't be going back this next trip. Its simply not as good.

We totally agree - the new menu is not as good, we miss the shrimp and the pineapple. No other choice than bread pudding for dessert even as a pay option. The atmosphere is not as homey either - no one was calling anyone "cousin". so they may as well change the name of the place, too. We wont be back.

We had eaten at Ohana about 8 times before this last December. Our previous service and food had been anywhere from good to very good. This last Dec. 27 was our last trip to Ohana. I can't tell you much about the food, since we hardly had any service. After waiting about 45 minutes for anything, I went to the check-in desk and asked to get the check and explained about he lack of food, drink and service. I wanted nothing free so I paid what they charged and of course left no tip. I feel like we didn't owe the amount charged, but I was upset and just wanted to get out of there. I wrote to management and got a letter saying they were sorry and would forward the compaint.

We went a couple of weeks ago and thought it was great. Plan to go back again.
But...we had first seating at 5....so it wasn't very busy.
Very nice server and helper was very funny.
Not rushed at all.
But we never had the old menu.
DH found out he liked au gratin potatoes after telling me for years that he didn't
Dessert was to die for!! Bread pudding (which I don't usually like0. The bananas foster sauce was soooo good.

We had dinner there for the first time last Nov. I can't compare it to the old menu. We reallly enjoyed it :cheer2: The food and service were great!
I'm sorry the OP had such a bad experience there, but I will go again.

at the end of May, I hope they have had enough complaints to realize what they are doing wrong and correct the problem. :scratchin

I try to not post a lot of negative stuff on the boards but I have to say Ohana was the biggest let down of our many WDW dining experiences over the years. I was so excited to try it after reading so many wonderful reviews.
Food wasn't very good and the service was sub-par and soooooo rushed. My dh always likens it to eating at a cheesy overpriced and over crowded hotel in Honolulu!

we ate at Ohana in Dec 2003, my choice as it was my birthday and I really wanted to go here. Boy what a let down. As the OP mentioned, service was rushed, the meats were yuck yuck yuck and the shrimp could have bounced off the walls it was so rubbery ..... For about 5 mins we considered revisiting this year as we are staying at the Poly, (I wouldn't have gone out of my way to go to this restaurant) but again decided no, we just won't risk it. As I am receiving a TA rate on my room we cannot do DP so it would be a fair chunk of $$ to risk a bad meal, we'd rather take our $$ to Le Cellier and know we'll get a great meal there.

We ate there last weekend. The new menu is definitely "off." See my thread on the subject. I find it interesting that I hated the two new dishes that everyone else seems to like--the potatoes and the bread pudding. We'd go back but only if we had a child with us. The four-year-old with us had the best time and still talks about going back. And all he ate was mac & cheese and vanilla ice cream. 'Ohana is great as entertainment for children, not so great for food.

This used to be DD's favorite restaurant until they changed the menu. We went for DD's pre-birthday celebration with my parents last October and it was not as good. The masked potatoes have cheese - my dad does not like cheese. I asked for any other kind of starch - we did receive a bowl of plain rice. Yuck.

She has no desire to go here next week. We are currently planning dining for August and this restaurant is not on the radar screen.

So, how is the Character Breakfast buffet? Is this a different experience? My 11 yo DS and I are doing this on our last morning! Should I change?
