DISNEY - MGM STUDIOS
New! Effective January 2008, this Park will be renamed Disney’s Hollywood Studios™.

Whoa..this is the first I've heard about this.

New Name, More Magic for Disney Theme Park

---------------------------------------------------------------------------In the Walt Disney World® Theme Park famous for all things Hollywood, it’s curtain up on the launch of new attractions, new looks, new breakthrough experiences… and a brand-new name.

Disney-MGM Studios will be renamed Disney’s Hollywood Studios, effective January 2008, announced Meg Crofton, president of the Walt Disney World Resort.

“The new name reflects how the park has grown from representing the golden age of movies to a celebration of the new entertainment that today’s Hollywood has to offer – in music, television, movies and theater,” she said.

With exciting coming attractions and experiences, the best and brightest of Hollywood is about to emerge for your Clients, Crofton said.

“As Disney continues to grow and invest in our family entertainment business, we constantly explore new ways to deliver high-quality, immersive experiences for our Guests,” she added. “As a park all about entertainment, Disney’s Hollywood Studios will deliver like never before. Now we can say that Hollywood is literally our middle name

Yeah, I heard that too. I heard it was because it isn't a working studio anymore!

for a park based on hollywood in the 30s, MGM is a good name to have around, especially since Universal is taken - for those who understand that MGM was once a powerhouse.

in 2008 (or any year in this millennium to be honest), MGM is more of a stigma, so i'd agree that the park offers more than the 30s did (since television came around).

i think the old concept for the park was a great one, but i don't have any issues with a newer direction if it's executed well (i think part of the problem with the old theme was that it lost its direction). i just wonder if this means the streetmosphere characters will have to change or be removed since they're completely based on the original premise.

This park has steadily declined. It seems they are looking for new direction and listening to guests. When we got back we both got the satisfaction survey and almost all of it was about MGM. We filled it out separately and later talked about what we had answered and we both had many of the same opinions...dump Drew Carey. update Indy, get some more thrill rides, and for heaven sake update the Backlot Tour. Not much to it anymore. Best things on it are the Earful Tower, Walt's plane and the POTC bone balls. This used to be my favorite park, now we give it half a day.

We're in 100% agreement! And if the rumors floating around are true, the entire Backlot Tour attraction is going to be removed completely. I don't know what this would mean for Walt's plane, though. Hopefully they'd put it someplace else where guests could see it.

amen! the Backlot tour hasnt changed one bit since the park opened. we usually dont even go to MGM anymore, unless we are staying 4 or more days (which is rare lately) or we go with friends that havent been there. it sure needs an update to keep me coming back!

Actually, it has changed considerably since the park first opened -- of course, back then, the Streets of America were considered a "closed set".

Heck, I even remember when part of the Backlot Tour included a segment where a guest was chosen to recreate the "Bumblebee Flight" from "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids."

Funny thing regarding the dropping of the MGM name. Our copy of the WDW vacation planning DVD (which we received at least 2-3 months ago) simply referred to it as "Disney Studios". I'm sure those are made quite a bit ahead of time, so this has been planned for a long time.

I'm kind of sad about the name change. Today's Hollywood is pretty much a wreck. Some of the people in Hollywood are just painful to hear about *cough cough* Lindsay Lohan. So it's like whenever I hear the word Hollywood, I think of the negative things in Hollywood now. I liked the old name, Disney MGM Studios. Or I'd even be happy with Disney Studios. I just really don't get why they have to throw Hollywood in there. I wouldn't care if it was just something that was going to be said, but it's going to be on merchandise. I'm not enticed to buy a Disney Hollywood Studios pin.
I guess I'm being ridiculous and I just don't really like change. I'll still be calling it MGM 30 years from now because it's what I grew up on. Kind of like how some people call the TTA the WED-Way PeopleMover.
:goodvibes

I thought "Classic Hollywood" was a good name for it, but they didn't invite me to the naming committee :confused3

yeah, not really. the contract that allowed them to use MGM in the park's name forbade them from using it in promotional materials, so it's pretty much always been that way and fueled rumors of a name change, but it's completely separate.

it's been noted that the domain names had only been registered for a few days prior to the announcement too, suggesting it was really a spur of the moment decision.
