I was just wondering if anyone has been here lately. I noticed it is no longer on the menu.

They better put that rubbery mess back, PRONTO!! That is the only thing that elevated the restaurant to "mediocre" status.

Unfortunately, they removed it from the menu on October 4 (aprox date).

Board members who have been to Cap'n Jack's since the change say that Crab Cakes replaced the lobster and that the crab cakes are very good.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. :sad1:

Acording to a guest who called dining this week, it is gone from the menu. She was furious and taking it out on the poor girl who answered her call. Sure wish these people that call us so angry would realize we just answer the phone... hee hee! ;)

This is because it is a victim of the Basic Disney Dining Plan!

Unfortunately, many people on the DDP, whether they pay for it directly or paying a higher rate for their room and getting "free" dining, look to the highest price items on the menu. This is based either on the attitude of "I paid for it and can get whatever I want" or "as long as it's free, let's get the best items".

For example, at Le Cellier where is a $22.50 difference in price between the lowest price adult lunch entree and the highest price dinner entree. Each restaturant receives a fixed dollar amount credit for each meal sold under DDP. Each restaurant has to make a profit.

As food costs go up it takes more money to operate a restaurant.

So as things progress more and more of the higher end cost items will vanish.

The signature restaurants do not have so much of a problem as they get paid double the regular restaurants.

If they ever do away with the Basic DDP within about six months you will find a lot more high end selections at all the restaurants.

why are all changes blamed on the DDP?

You don't think maybe it's just the fact the entire economy is tanking and the cost of food (all food) is going through the roof?

If enough people were willing & able to pay for exorbitantly expensive foods like lobster, they would remain on the menu. Obviously, there's not enough people willing to put out cash for these items...which is not surprising, since apparently it's happening nationwide right now.

Just saw a report on CNBC today about the Maine lobster industry being on the skids, big time. They had two reasons...one was that the Canadian processors are not buying lobster in the usual quantities this year (because their financing dried up - those Icelandic banks which failed) and the other big reason was that people are not ordering lobster in restaurants all over, which has lead to a severe reduction in sales for the lobstermen...the bottom line on the story was that lobster will either be coming off menus or will be priced off menus. With the Canadian processors out of the picture there will be a shortage of lobster available for restaurants...the suggestion in the news story was that the grocery store prices will be good if you're willing to Do it yourself.

Is there anywhere where you can get lobster on the dining plan?

I completely agree!
There are so many posts here asking where to get lobster for a single DDP credit, celebration when Coral Reef had crab legs for a credit, dining reviews where people eat Filet Mignon 5 out of 7 nights, and how some entrees aren't "worth it" because the price tag isn't expensive enough to "waste a credit". Don't try to convince me it's not because of the DDP - it absolutely is. I would not be surprised if there are eventually different menu selections for DDP vs OOP, (Similar to the 3 course selection they do at Le Cellier or Chef's de France already) or surcharges for some of the more expensive items.

And I just wanted to add...

Don't forget the most recent round of discount codes and pins were for free dining. There will be an awful lot of people there that didn't even pay the $38pp for DDP between now and 12/31, so it stands to reason that the menus will be "tweaked" between now and then to make up for that.

I'm sure they'll call it "seasonal".

because you can still get it at Narcoossees, a two credit restaurant. I was at California Grill last weekend where you can get a lobster appetizer (a two credit restaurant). Captain Jack's is a one credit restaurant. The expensive stuff is going to disappear first from those restaurants that get reimbursed for only one dining plan credit per DDP guest - and there are a LOT of DDP guests. We have yet to see if Narcoosees also eliminates the lobster entree.

They might be shooting themselves in the foot because from what I've been reading, the lobster was the only reason most even bothered to go to Cap'n Jack's in the first place.

Weren't they planning on changing that whole restaurant anyway? I thought it was going to be re-furbed as part of the PI re-do.

That would be interesting, seeing as at this point Cap'n Jack's is the only restaurant at DTD owned and run by Disney. Disney's moving toward outsourcing the entire area - the now-closed nightclubs were also owned by Disney. When and if they are replaced, it will be with third-party establishments leasing the property from Disney. So I'd wonder if they aren't planning to do the same thing with the only restaurant in the area they still own.

Jack's is not located at PI - it's in the Marketplace.

I swore I read that they were doing a re-furb somewhere - maybe here? Allears? I'll try to find it.
I remember laughing the first time I saw the menu - we live near the Jersey Shore, so I would expect a waterfront restaurant named "Capt'n" anything to be primarily seafood.
Imagine my surprise when it had Vegetable Soup, Pot Roast, Chicken, Penne Alfredo, and one lonely little seafood entree, 2 if you count Penne Alfredo with shrimp. And no fish for the kids - not even a fish stick!
