No more cable. Hulu or Amazon Prime?

I really want to cut the cable cord too, but how do you get local channels? Can I turn on cbs like I do now, and watch the nightly lineup continuously? Or is it like when one show is over, you have to choose and start the next show?

I have Netflix and Hulu+.
I looked into Amazon prime, but they just didn't have a good enough variety for my to bite and the other services just aren't something i've needed. Maybe in the future though. Having all 3 would still be way cheaper than cable.

We cut cable out 6 years ago and we don't miss it. We have amazon prime and netflix. We got amazon mostly for the free 2 day shipping - the TV shows/movies from are just bonus as they don't have the widest selection but we can get most of what we want to watch on netflix.

Oh I forgot to add, we get local channels with an antenna we hook up to the tv.

You have a few options. Get something like sling for local channels, get someone's login for their cable provider and get the channels on your streaming device or get something like kodi which will get local channels.

Just a good ole set of rabbit ears plugged in to your tv is all you need for local programming. They're $10 at Walmart

We cut the cable cord over a year ago. At that time, we already had Netflix and Amazon Prime. Since then we have added Hulu Plus and HBO NOW. If it were only me, I would have kept HBO long enough to see the most recent Game of Thrones season and then cancelled. My plan was to binge everything we were interested in during the month it took to watch GOT, cancel, and then subscribe again every six months or so for a month. But we are only paying $25 for those two services which is a huge savings over cable and DH doesn't want to let it go so I don't push.

CBS has their own streaming service and we tried it but it was terrible- hanging up, buffering, and weird commercial breaks- so we cancelled after a month. That was almost a year ago so it may be better now. Instead, I purchased a season pass on Amazon for Big Brother last summer and then one for Big Bang this year. We haven't kept up with Big Bang though and agree that we're over it so I won't buy it again.

We've bought a couple of other season passes for things that we couldn't find to stream- Project Runway, American Horror Story.

As far as how to stream, we have found Apple TV to be the easiest- fastest to connect and seamless. We use our SMART TV for Amazon since it isn't on Apple. We tried a Roku stick but found it glitchy and slow compared to Apple TV so we eventually replaced it with a second Apple TV.

Overall, we've saved and mostly just really like watching what we want when we want rather than surfing hundreds of channels and not being able to find anything to watch.

Thank you...I'm glad to see i'm not the only one who is sick of paying high prices for tv. What is Sling tv? I've never heard of it but if it's worth it I will definitely look into it.

Here's the link for Sling https://www.sling.com/package It streams live cable tv networks with On Demand for most of the channels too. on to your tv/computer/cell phone. You get about 25 cable channels for $19.99, then you can add on different packages like movie channels, Life & Style Channels, world news, Sports channels, etc. for an extra $5 a month for 6+ extra channels in each category. It's sort of a la carte cable tv. We love it. Happy to answer any questions you have

ETA: Sling sends out emails frequently to let you know a channel, like HBO will stream for free for a 4 day period & you can binge on HBO programs for those 4 days without paying for an HBO subscription.

We have an older apple tv (I think it's like 2 year old), it does not have the ability to add apps, except for a few. For me the cost of upgrading isn't worth it especially since ours is not that old. I just think for what it is roku and chrome cast are products better suited for us, ok mostly me because I'm not super techie. Roku certainly is the most user friendly of the devices and our roku is a roku 2 so it's not even the most current.

Oh right, we have both the old and new. I felt the old had all the apps we needed, but the new has the ability to add lots of apps.

We were paying $80/mo for just cable. The slower speeds that were cheaper weren't enough for our needs. My DH and boys are gamers and my DH works from home 3 days per week and the servers at his work to get the info to our house required more speed.

Anyway, for $35/mo more, we could get cable TV added. We decided to do it. We bought Tivo boxes with l lifetime off of eBay, and have been very happy with it. I don't see us ever going back to just antenna, but never say never I guess.

As for the OP's question, I would go with Netflix and Hulu over Amazon.

Comcast has an app to watch shows. That's what I use. not sure what wifi provider you use.

You might want to look if your Apple TV has a Lifetime channel app. Project Runway has the latest 2 or 3 episodes unlocked. I managed to watch the entire last season of Project Runway through the Lifetime app on my Roku, and I've been watching this current season of Project Runway All Stars the same way. Most of the shows on the app seem to be locked so only those with a cable login can watch, but at least thus far Project Runway seems to be the exception to that. You can't get more than a couple weeks behind though because the episodes do get locked a couple weeks after they air.
