No maternity leave?

While I love my country, there are some things we don't do well. Wouldn't it be a great world if all the leaders of the many countries would get together to look at the best of the best from each country and figure out a way to ensure those things for all the people in the world?

Don't mind me...I'm a dreamer.

Indeed. But you gotta start at the grassroots - by state, by country, by continent and then the world. You've already seen how protective people are over their own pile of gold, though...

I agree. There are some basic rights. The right for the mother to take care of her baby. The right for rest time. The right for healthcare. All of these should not be dependent on your income or "extras" that your employer offers!

I agree these should be basic rights...unfortunately they are not basic rights in the USA.

There are also a lot of people who equate family values with benefits for young children. I think the US needs policies that support ALL types of families and allows people to effectively deal with the bumps along the road.

Here, here!! I couldn't agree more.

I agree. I would only support extended paid maternity leave if there were similar supports available for individuals who did not have young children. For instance, many elderly would benefit greatly from shopping/housekeeping/yard services (not to mention payment for prescribed medications--this is not covered by Medicare), and I would want to see these kinds of supports available as well.

I also don't think health care insurance should be based on how good a job you have. As a case manager, I met many people who were doing the best they could but really were not capable of getting a good job (many of these people probably had IQs high enough that they did not qualify for SSI, but low enough that they weren't capable of reading or doing arithmetic, simple skills to most of us).

I do not feel these people should have to go without health care because their jobs didn't provide insurance--it was not their fault that they weren't capable.

Just to make one thing clear here. In my province , Quebec, what the CLSC provides is an extra help: for new mother , they migh come to see if the child as all he/she need , provide guidance to some care to women who dont know hoe to care for childreen , or in some poor erea of the city , see that all the need of the childreen are meet. With elderly people , the will come to the house to administer medication the person need to take , or help with meals etc. Obviously , if you are well of , there is no need for this type of help. heck , I am not well off , and I dont need it, but if I cannot pay for psychological help , they can provide it.

My best friends right now have there 1 1/2 year old in the hospital for leucemia treatment. They can count on the CLSC to provide info or,, once they are back home with their child after the 2 months in the hospital , to send someone when the family cannot take it anymore , to provide basic care for the childreen or the parents.

CLSC will not sent housekeeping to your house to clean it for you , but they might be in a position to help out an elderly person who live alone in dire condition , to get out of this conditon , or find the volontere organisation that will help out this person.

But again , thay are not baby sitters , or housiter who come in when the parents decide that a nice evening at the Olive garden would be nice..

To go along these lines, we do have special paid periods that we can take to take care of familly members: Your parents have to go to chemotherapy for a months and need someone to help , you can have this governement paid leave. Your spouse is dying and need to have someone with him/her: you dont have to bankrup yourself to be with our loved one. The program is calle " help for the natural helper" ( this is a trnalation from french , I dont know the name in english)

There are government-funded programs in place all over Canada that do just that. In the province that I came from, there's a program that is called Home Care that sends workers in to provide basic housekeeping for the elderly who are unable to do it any longer. There are also programs that send nurses in to do basic "maintenance" on the body - like clipping toe nails, bathing, etc. There's also respite care that will give caretakers of elderly or mentally disabled individuals a break which is, in effect, babysitting. That is above and beyond the Old Age Pension and Canada Pension benefits that seniors receive.

I agree with you there. I don't get why the US can't have universal healthcare. People keep saying "It's a different culture" but if pretty much everyone else in the free world can offer it, I think it's doable.

I thought so... I am just always saying Quebec , because once I made the mistake of saying something that was particular to Quebec , and said Canada instead , and a poster got really angry with me. To the point of even finding threads where I said that I wanted Quebec to separate ( wich is true , but somehow I was not permited to speak good about canada because of that !:confused3 "

Any way , while our systhem is far from prefect , I am happy that people who decides to have child , and those who decide not to have an abortion , can find the help , and receive the time they need to start their familly !
