No Longer coming to you Live from Disney World! Take 3 DDW'S TAMBU LOUNGE 8/6

Rachel I have always thought that is one good thing about living in MN there are no cockroaches, fire ants or spiders that can kill you! These freezing temps are good for something :thumbsup2

DeeDee we ate at LTT at the end of our vacation and had the WORST service of the whole 14 days! The food was still good but it was so packed and our server was rude!

Rachel, I can not stand cockroaches. I would have flipped out had one that large been staring at me.

There would have been no need for me to call anyone because:

1) I would have screamed so loudly the entire floor would have come running,

or

2) I would have passed out from fright.

Oh my gosh it was scary because I was literally trapped in the bathroom until I was done doing! It was nasty.

Yes that is a good thing about MN! I have thought about moving to Florida but I would be so freaked out about the bugs.
Rachel I don't think I'll remember anything about your conch fritters or gross desserts but I will remember that monster cockroach!! Yikes!! :scared1:
It was horrible!! Thank god I caught it or else I would literally make them move me into a different room.

Rachel- I would have screamed :scared1:

Patty- love the pictures

Vicki- I have never had chocolate covered pineapples but I am intrigued

Before Linda starts us out with our next set of reviews, I want to first take a moment to thank her for many things. First of all, I could be wrong but I believe that it was Linda who first suggested that we all get together for Afternoon Tea at the Garden View Lounge. She also took on the task of making the ADR for us back in June (probably exactly 180 days out) ;). I was of course very excited at the mere thought of having a proper English tea (or the American version of it anyway) with a proper English lady. But Linda, being the very thoughtful person that she is, added her own special touch to our tea by placing these lovely party favors at each person's place setting prior to us being seated at our tables.

Inside the pretty little bag was this teapot charm...

Isn't it the cutest thing ever?!?! :)

But that was not all...Linda had another wonderful surprise in store for me. She presented me with this lovely memento, in honor of the many Disney restaurant reviews that I facilitated for the live thread.

Now you may see photos of this presentation in some of the upcoming tea reviews and they will most likely show me with tears streaming down my face. But I assure you folks, these were tears of joy. :thumbsup2 This special gift from Linda will forever serve as a reminder to me of the incredibly rewarding experience that I had as the host of the live thread. At this tea, I was surrounded by some of those rewards. The live thread provided me with the opportunity to get to know (or know better) so many great DISers including all of these ladies, as each of them had served as a live reporter...and most of them more than once. Brenda and Vicki helped me to launch the original thread by serving as my first and second live reporters back in August 2012, so without them there would not have been a live thread. Linda provided me with the idea of branching out by being the first to do live reporting from Disneyland and Disneyland Paris. Rachel, in addition to serving as a reporter several times, also volunteered to keep the thread going for me during the two vacations that I took during my 16 month tenure as host. Paula did a phenomenal job of reporting during her many trips to Disney World and Disneyland, as evidenced by the fact that she won the live thread game not once but twice. Scoring 692 points in the final game, Paula will forever hold the record for points scored! :worship: Oh, and lucky for me, Sue and DeeDee (being loyal followers and reporters for the live thread) both offered to again do live updates during their December trips, which is how I discovered that they would be there at the same time and allowed me the opportunity to meet both of these great ladies in person. And last but not least, Miss Emily. Though she was one of my youngest live reporters, you could never tell it from the quality of her updates from their Feb. 2013 trip. This lovely young lady is living proof of that old saying, "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree". ;)

So thank you ladies for your service to the live thread and for making this tea extra-special for me. It was definitely the highlight of my trip! :) And a special thank you to Linda...you really know how to make a grown woman cry.

Ok, enough with the sentimental stuff Barb...let's bring on the food. :woohoo:

Coming next: Tea for Ten

Barb you are a DIS Board Legend :worship:
Keeping this live thread going for so long and in such style was simply phenomenal.
We all take our hats off to you :thanks:

Afternoon Tea

In case anyone hadn't guessed from my funny accent and use of the letter ‘U’ in coloUr and flavoUr ...... I am English and as such, tea drinking is part of my DNA.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been taught that tea can solve pretty much any problem in the World. Yep, we take our tea drinking seriously in the UK!

So what happens when us Brits come to the US and ask for a cup of tea? well firstly we usually get asked if we want iced tea which stumps us right from the get go ... ice in tea? whatever next :scared1:

Next up when we have gotten over the shock of our national beverage being served cold, we begin to get ridiculously specific about how we take our tea!

........ the water has to be boiling hot, not just hot, the tea needs to be brewed for a pre-assigned length of time which can vary depending on if you are from the North or the South of England, and of course we want milk!

Ah yes, we are all slightly insane when it comes to tea drinking, have you seen Downtown Abbey :rolleyes1

For anyone still reading my rambles ...... the Wikipedia History of Afternoon Tea

Tea consumption increased dramatically during the early nineteenth century and it is around this time that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is said to have complained of "having that sinking feeling" during the late afternoon. At the time it was usual for people to take only two main meals a day, breakfast, and dinner at around 8 o'clock in the evening. The solution for the Duchess was a pot a tea and a light snack, taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon.

Later friends were invited to join her in her rooms at Woburn Abbey and this summer practice proved so popular that the Duchess continued it when she returned to London, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for "tea and a walking the fields." Other social hostesses quickly picked up on the idea and the practice became respectable enough to move it into the drawing room. Before long all of fashionable society was sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches in the middle of the afternoon.

Ooh, tea drinking is fashionable, elegant and us DISers can pretend we are social hostesses :thumbsup2

Blimey I am waffling - right here we go with the review if you are still awake

There were 10 of us meeting at the Grand Floridian for tea and as I was a little early, I had time to explore and enjoy the Christmas decor and the very impressive Gingerbread House where a very animated CM was giving a Gingerbread House making demo

Once we had our full group assembled, we checked in for our ADR and didn’t have to wait too long before we were seated at two round tables next to the windows.

Pretty details abound

Our server today was perfectly lovely but I think having this many people to deal with sent her into a bit of a tail spin so service this afternoon was slow to say the least and afternoon tea very nearly turned into a midnight snack

The Menu

I ordered the Buckingham Tea which was served with a glass of sparkling wine

On to the all important tea, would my English Breakfast with milk pass muster, well I am pleased to say it did, it was piping hot and delicious!

And to keep it piping hot

A couple of group shots for you

As I don’t eat meat, I asked for my sandwiches to be all the veggie options which I believe were egg and gorgonzola cheese with pear.

Instead of the pate I had two of the yummy onion tarts.

Everything was really good and it was lovely to spend time chatting with this great bunch of DISers

Slightly better view of the yummy union tarts

Next we were served with warm scones, devonshire cream, jam and lemon curd. Oh my goodness these scones are simply fantastic, loved them!

The Strawberry Jam Tart would have even made the Queen Of Hearts smile, delicious buttery pastry but the scone stole the show :cloud9:

Finally, I decided on the option of strawberries and cream - aren’t they pretty?

Overall, I thought the food (and tea) were delicious, the only downside was the fairly slow service and the absolute age it took to get everyones bills sorted. I know we were all paying separately but I still don’t understand why that should cause such a headache for the staff

Anyway, not to end on a negative, I really enjoyed my afternoon at the Garden View Tea Room and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend you come here for a proper cuppa !

Over to the others now ......

Great review Linda, although I have to admit I am a pretty rubbish Brit as I don't like tea :guilty:

The jam tart looks perfectly lovely though. Was the scone really a proper scone or was it one of them there biscuit things that they like to think are similar to our scones ;)

Joh, I am happy to confirm that it was indeed a 'proper' scone ;)

Wow Barb, what a lovely dedication to everyone. Just beautiful!! :flower3:

Linda, we Canucks ALSO use the "U", so that must make us right... right!!??

Aww, I'm so glad Hunter got to participate. :goodvibes

Great review, especially from someone who knows her tea!

The Tea was definitely a highlight of the trip. This was my first time but it definitely will not be the last.

I had the Buckingham Palace - Our traditional tea sandwiches, scones and jam tarts complemented by fresh strawberries and cream, or a selection of freshly baked pastries, along with your choice of tea.

For my tea choice, I chose one of the Seasonal offerings ...

The Nutcracker ...

This was a truly lovely cup of tea! I really enjoyed it.

Hunter enjoyed his own brand of "tea"! And drank it properly ... pinkies up!

I don't eat salmon so I subbed for extra egg salad ...

These were very tasty sandwiches!! But the best part of the tea for me was the scone ...

I loved the clotted cream.

I chose two pastries ... an éclair and I believe a lemon tart.

And for the best part ... Linda's presentation to Barb

Those tears of joy!

A very special gift for the special lady responsible for bringing us all together!

This was a very enjoyable afternoon. Long, as Linda mentioned due to very slow service but still a very special experience!

Before I share my Afternoon Tea review I have to say, that was a lovely and touching post Barb. I feel so honored to have been a part of this group! And might I add, I'm glad that you inspired the start to this live dining thread by asking me to mess with the pizza guy at BW pizza window and try to get him to smile and to try something with nutella! Fun adventures and great memories - thanks to Barb.

We had so many great experiences this trip and I am grateful for each of these ladies.

This was the second time that Em and I had partaken in this afternoon delight. It is definitely a great way to spend a relaxing couple of hours in the beautiful Grand Floridian Hotel.

We met up with the ladies in the lobby and after a short wait were seated at two adjoining tables. Linda was so very thoughtful and had lovely teapot charms at every place setting.

There are plenty of tea choices here and if you are not sure what to order you can ask for a sample of a few. For my tea selection I went with something that I thought was a great holiday choice – the gingerbread tea. It was had a mild ginger flavor and wasn’t too overpowering so a very nice choice. Em chose the Garden View Blend tea.

Gingerbread Tea: Warm and soothing with a spicy sweetness of the holidays
Garden View Blend Tea: A blend of Assam and Keemun black leaves with the floral overtones of flowery Earl Grey

Em and I both chose the Buckingham tea service which is 5 assorted tea sandwiches with an onion tart, a scone, a strawberry jam tart, and a final course that is a choice of a few desserts. The standard sandwiches are as follows:
- Pear and gorgonzola
- Salmon
- Chicken curry
- Cucumber Watercress
- Egg salad

I asked to substitute PB&J for the salmon sandwich the same as last time. Since Em wasn’t a fan of most of the sandwiches she asked for 3 pear and gorgonzola and 2 ham & cheese (American) sandwiches for a modified order.

I was excited about the next course which was the scone and the strawberry jam tart. I LOVE the scone with the lemon curd. I also like the strawberry preserves so I piled lemon curd on one half and strawberry preserves on the other half. Such a treat! The clotted cream was ignored.

DSCN7988.jpg

For our final course, Em chose the chocolate covered strawberries while I decided to sample a couple items from the pastry tray. The lemon curd tart and the hazelnut cream filled swan looked good. Two perfect choices! They were both delicious.

Following our final course, as Linda shared, she had commissioned a special framed Disney dining print that had the names of all the Disney restaurants that formed the shape of a Mickey plate, knife and fork. It was the perfect gift for the dedication that Barb has made to the dining boards. Here's a short video

Afternoon tea took about 2 hours which is a nice relaxed pace; however, we had to run to another dining experience not too long after!

I just want to say thank you again for letting me join all you lovely ladies at tea!

I have no pictures to share :-( I forgot my camera in our hotel room and wasn't about to go back and grab it because my 2 year old was in there throwing a fit to end all fits because mommy was leaving him for an afternoon.......in Disney World......with his Daddy! (I know horrible life he leads right?) I actually left without cash too but thank god for magic bands.

I couldn't believe I was finally meeting all these wonderful women ..... And one gentlemen, in person, I felt like I knew them from their reporting and dining reviews but they didn't know me as I don't post that often, remember the 2 year old back in the room throwing a fit? He gets most my down time! Well all you lurkers will be happy to hear that these people are amazingly welcoming and sweet! I ended up sitting between Barb and Linda. Yup the queen of Dis dining to my right and the proper British woman to my left wow I won the Dis Lottery! What a fun afternoon of tea! The food was good and exactly the same as everyone else who has already posted their pictures, I loved the lemon curd paired with the scone and the strawberries and cream. The service was slow, the poor girl really was overwhelmed by all our substitutions and separate checks. This was probably my one and only time at tea, and it was a great experiences I am happy to have had. I travel with only my DH and DS and neither will likely be as accommodating as Hunter! Unless someone wants to meet again in October??

It was an absolute pleasure to meet you all and I'm very sorry I didn't get to talk to the people at the other table more! Or have had time to meet you again during our trip.

One last thank you to Barb, she really is amazing! I was a reporter in January of 2013 so 11 months later, 2 days after our tea, she some how found my cell phone number so she could text me an invite to another meet up everyone was having. How thoughtful you are Barb, it amazes me! Sorry I didn't get to stop in for that meet my previously mentioned baby boy was starting to get a cold and cranky so I didn't want to leave him.

Hi Sue! :wave2:

Thanks for your kind words. Regarding tea in October, I think I am going toward the end of October but haven't yet settled on the exact dates. If our trips should overlap, I would love to meet you for tea again. Linda will be there at that time and I think maybe Brenda too. Also another great British lady and DISer, Joh (wilmabride), who I have been dying to meet will be there as well. Maybe we could all have a proper Afternoon Tea together? :scratchin

Oh, and speaking of Hunter...love his "pinky up" poses. I was seated at the other table with my back to you guys so unfortunately I didn't get to witness this in person. So glad you captured the moments with photos...thanks ladies! :thumbsup2

Having Afternoon Tea has been a mother/daughter tradition for my daughter(s) and me since we first visited the Garden View Lounge for my oldest daughter's 18th birthday back in 2007.

232323232fp437_7_nu3679___2__95_276___286235ot1lsi1.jpg

As you can see from the photo, my daughter was presented with a crown and birthday cupcake and was made to feel very special. So of course, we were hooked on this place for life. :thumbsup2

Since that time I had visited the Garden View Lounge during 6 of my 7 trips to Disney World. The one time I was forced to skip it was because I was traveling with only my teenage son and he wanted no part of anything which included sipping tea out of china cups while daintily eating little crustless cucumber sandwiches.

During this 8th visit to the Garden View Lounge, I splurged and had the Grand Tea.

The Grand Tea - The classic English tradition of Afternoon Tea, Grand Floridian style. We offer you a variety of tea sandwiches, scone and jam tart, followed by your choice of our freshly baked tea pastries, Strawberries and Créme, or English Trifle, accompanied by a glass of sparkling wine and your choice of tea. - $35

This is nearly identical to the Buckingham Tea that many of the others had (for $25, or $10 less) except for two extra items. One of these is that the Grand Tea includes a glass of Domaine Ste. Michelle Sparkling Wine.

I seem to have forgotten to take a photo of my tea/tea cup but I chose the...

Princess Breakfast Tea - A sweet custom blend of South African organic rooibos flavored with vanilla bean and a hint of strawberries. Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, and naturally decaffeinated.

I have had this several times before here and again I really enjoyed it. Of course, as usual I couldn't resist the urge to make my tea even sweeter by adding a sugar cube. It seems so much "classier" to use tongs to add sweetener to my drink than to rip open a packet of Equal and clutter up the table with the "paper trail" evidence of my sweet tooth.

Here's a photo from my last visit in March 2013, which shows the aforementioned sugar bowl and tongs and what was probably my cup of Princess Breakfast tea, as more often than not that is what I have here. ;)

And speaking of my last visit, it was then that we discovered that the shrimp salad sandwich had been replaced by salmon in the tea sandwich assortment. My daughter and I both like salmon, so we gave it a try. It was nasty...very smelly and fishy tasting. :crazy2: One taste and we were both done with it. Now perhaps it was just a bad batch, but not wanting to take any chances, this time I substituted the salmon for an additional grilled pear and gorgonzola one...my favorite of the other four sandwiches.

Plate of Assorted Tea Sandwiches - five assorted tea sandwiches on fresh, house-made breads
(Pictured from left to right are: 2 grilled pear and gorgonzola, curry chicken salad, egg salad, cucumber, cream cheese, & watercress sandwiches with a small onion tart in back and paté in the front.

The pear and gorgonzola sandwiches were again my favorite and the cucumber one was probably my least favorite, as I find it to be a little bland. However I enjoy having the variety, so would probably order the assortment (substituting only for the salmon) this way again next time. I also enjoy the onion tart, as it is always sweet and delicious. As for the paté, well I could easily do without it. The paté is the other additional item which you get with the Grand Tea. So for me, not being a fan of their paté, the decision of whether to order the Grand Tea or the Buckingham is dependent upon whether or not I feel like having a glass of sparkling wine for the additional $10.

Moving on to the next course...

Buttery Scone and Strawberry Jam Tart, accompanied by strawberry jam, Devonshire clotted cream, and lemon curd.

The accompaniments included with this course have gone through a bit of a transformation in recent years. During my May 2012 tea (and all my visits prior to that), they served a small jar of strawberry preserves with your scone and Devonshire cream. (Btw, this was the a la carte portion, which included two scones)

8719b2b6.jpg

Then on our next visit, which was in March 2013, there was no more jar...

Also, we were given a choice of either the strawberry jam or lemon curd, to go along with the Devonshire cream.

Now with this visit, we were automatically served all three accompaniments...

While I enjoyed the lemon curd, I still prefer the combination of the strawberry jam and Devonshire cream generously slathered upon my scone. ;)

For my final course, I debated between the strawberries and crème and the English trifle. I have had both here and enjoy them equally. I finally decided though to go with the...

Strawberries and Créme

Not a very good photo of this I'm afraid, as you can not tell what is underneath that delicious layer of whipped cream (see Linda's photo for a better look).

Here again they have made a change, this time in the presentation. This is what it looked like when they called this merely strawberries and cream...

IMG_4916.jpg

And the similar presentation of the English trifle...

IMG_4918.jpg

Now they have a much more beautiful presentation of these (see Brenda's photo of Paula's trifle) with an "F" imprinted at the top. Oh, and the strawberries and cream are now listed on the menu as strawberries and crème. But whether they call it cream or the "fancier" crème, it still tastes like a dollop of whipped cream on top of a pile of deliciously sweet, fresh strawberries... so it's all good! :thumbsup2

One change that they have made recently that I don't like though is that you can no longer order items such as the tea sandwiches or scones a la carte. I liked having the option of ordering one or two things rather than always having a 3 course meal here. However this change is not a deal breaker for me, as I have generally always considered this my lunch and ordered either the Buckingham or Grand Tea anyway.

Regarding our service here, as others have already said, it was slower than slow. We had one server for the 10 of us seated at two tables and when ordering we requested 8 separate checks. So from the beginning she seemed flustered, but by the end (which was hours later) when she presented us with our checks and most of us pulled out our Tables in Wonderland cards...well, I thought the poor girl's head was going to explode.

So in conclusion, my 8th Afternoon Tea will definitely be one of my most memorable visits ...and no, not because it was the longest. ;) I will always remember my 8th time because of the great people I was with and how they made me feel so special during our looong afternoon together at the Garden View Lounge.
Thanks again ladies (& gentleman)! :goodvibes

Linda- what a thoughtful gift.

Love all the pics of the tea. Hunter with his proper pinky up!LOL
Looks like you all had a nice time. Sad I was on my way to the airport by that time. I will definitely need to try tea time at some point
