Ok hello it's my Mom that does this all the time.i am one of the small % with a penicillin allergy that is also then allergic to blue cheese. (they use penicillin to get the "blue mold" lines to form) so small that most are not allergic. But I am!

So when my mom mentions a recipe with blue cheese in it she replies oh ut you don't like blue cheese. No I do like it but it makes me sick if I eat it so I don't.

Rant over.

I am allergic to pickles. I feel your pain.

The problem is that a lot of people will say they are allergic when they just don't like something. And it has made those with food allergies look like they are just being picky. Personally, I love pickles. I just don't like the beautiful head to toe itchy rash that occurs when I have something with pickles. I can tell you that the last time we went out to eat, there was cross contamination. The only food I am allergic to is pickles. I did not order anything with pickles listed as an ingredient but my son did. I broke out in a slight rash and was itchy for over a day.

My wife is allergic to Penicillin, the mold on citrus, and mangoes.

I've never heard about the link between Penicillin mold and blue cheese. She can eat that just fine. O.o

OP, I know how you feel. I am allergic to milk, it literally causes my lungs to close up (I can tolerate it in very small amounts), but everyone says I'm lactose intolerant. I'm NOT lactose intolerant at all; in fact, before I was diagnosed with my milk allergy at age 18, I ate ice cream, cheese and drank milk on a regular basis. Unfortunately, most of the people I encounter think a milk allergy and lactose intolerance are the same thing.

Wait for it.....wait for it.....

I'm allergic to penicillin. Not sure about the link to Bleu cheese as I plain don't like it so it's nothing I eat.

My brother is, interestingly enough, allergic to all poultry. It made dining out as a family an interesting ordeal.
The one staple 'food' that caused him the most problems? Gravy! So many gravies are chicken based, and he'd always get sick if we didn't think to ask first. And some restaurants can't even tell you.
Hotdogs were a problem too... to the point where even I can tell if a hotdog has chicken in it or not these days.

My DD is allergic to Penicillin. She eats blue cheese. She gets it mostly on Cobb salads and sandwiches (MacAllistar's). Now, it's a strong cheese so she often scrapes off half of it, but she's never gotten hives from it. (which is what penicillin does).

OP, do you tell her firmly that it,makes you sick? Perhaps give her some info on the allergy with the words Java is allergic to this and have her put it her recipes.

This common mix-up drives me batty. I once worked in a daycare where a kid had just been diagnosed with a milk allergy. Mom brought him Lactaid brand milk, and of course he broke out in hives and had to be rushed to the E.R. He was fine, but it was terrifying for all of us.

i'm allergic to amoxicillin, which is in the penicillin family. so, i can't take most antibiotics. in fact, when i had group-B with my third child, i had to take an antibiotic before labor. they tried to give me something safe, but i ended up with an allergic reaction to what they gave me.

that said, i've never had an issue with blue cheese either. :confused3

I'm right there with you! I have so many medication allergies I have to wear a medicalert tag and carry epi pens.

Guilty. I am allergic to cashews and pistachios, but I don't like any nuts, so I will generally say I am allergic to nuts. And technically I could be allergic to more nuts but not know yet, since I don't eat them. I am also allergic to mangos, kiwi, and latex. They are all in the same family.

My husband is allergic to tree nuts and a bunch of other things; he developed all of his allergies as an adult. We deal with it, but get this -MIL and FIL don't believe it's possible to develop food allergies as an adult and have tried to "sneak" things he's allergic to into his food several times! The last time they made a side dish with cashew oil and served it to him "to see what would happen." Luckily I tasted it first and realized it had oil on it; he'd only taken one bite by that time and we didn't need to use the epipen (just a lot of Benadryl). Needless to say we bring our own food to their house now!

I developed all mine as an adult too.

I "acquired" my Oral Allergy Syndrome about 10-12 years ago also. Stinks. I'm now allergic to ALL fresh fruit and nuts. (tree nuts) Peanuts are a "bean / legume" so I can still have peanuts.

Sorry about his parents. It's just wrong and rather kooky to sneak things into his food like that. ugh.
:sad2:

My in-laws claimed that I wasn't really allergic to strawberries or shellfish, but instead I was just a picky eater. They grilled chicken one Sunday along with shrimp. FIL used the same tongs to flip the shrimp and the chicken, plus he had the shrimp on the higher shelf of the grill, dripping down onto the chicken. Even after seeing my allergic reaction the still insisted that I was just picky.

I'm also allergic to the penicillin family as well as the sulfa family. Add wine to the list of things I'm allergic to as well. Try explaining that one to people!

My mom is the same way - she actually found out she's allergic to blue cheese during a summer trip to Disney World! I cannot tell you how many doctors have said "How do you know?" in the past couple of years and when I use the blue cheese example they say they've never heard of that being an issue.

I have a friend who likes to call me a picky eater, but 99% of the things I "don't like" either make me sick or hurt my teeth to the point of headache.

That's why people who say they are allergic to, say, broccoli (because it makes them gassy) or eggs (because they don't like the smell) are jerks -- because they make people not take genuine allergies seriously. My future stepsister claims to be allergic to about a dozen things (dairy, gluten, eggs, nuts, vegetables, beef, whatever) when in reality she has never been tested. Her only real allergy is not being the center of attention.

Sorry about your blue cheese allergy. That would break my heart.

I know what you mean. Very annoying. Nothing more then a bid for attention I think. And naturally they are allergic to pretty much under the sun unless of course they are in WDW. I guess even their food is magical.

I get it. I'm allergic to pineapple & cranberry. I used to love th both. My family is very good about watching our for it. Lots of recipes & juices use both, especially summer & fall holiday foods.

I also am allergic to 13 drugs, including just about all the best migraine meds, sveral antibiotics, & nsaids. Makes medical treatment quite the puzzle, especially when I have severe arthritis.
