No homework for DS yet???

Oh how I wish that were the case with my first grader. Monday's homework was "why is the Constitution important to you?" ***? Both of us just stared at the paper for a good 10 minutes....do most first graders have a good handle on the Constitution? Cripes, I'm 42 and I don't have a good handle on the Constitution......

Last night was math, where he is adding numbers like 23+14? Huh?

Evenings have been looooooooong around my house........ :confused3

*** is RIGHT!!! :rotfl2: Holy crap I would be stumped on that myself! :rotfl:

" He's in first grade. Maybe the teacher keeps them busy all day long and then wants them to have time to be a kid in the evening. I don't think kids should work all day long, when can they play"?

I am not referring to hours of work.....maybe 15-20 minutes just to reinforce what he is learning in school.

Anyway, homework starts next week. Dh talked to the teacher this a.m. after dropping ds off at school. He had a nice "conference" with her as we can not attend the Know Your School Night. The only thing she says that needs to talk to ds about in class is the fact that he needs to finish his own assignment before he goes to help his classmates with theirs!!! :teeth: I'll take that!! Told ya he likes school! ;)

OMG!! Jessica did this EXACT thing in first grade!! I had questioned her teacher why she was having so much homework when a friend of hers, who was in the same class, didn't have that much. She told me it was because if Jess saw anyone needing help, she would stop her work and spend time helping them. I remember finally telling the teacher to stop Jess (why she didn't do this on her own was beyond me :confused3 ). She told me Jessica broke down and CRIED when she wasn't allowed to help anymore. :goodvibes I've told you before that some of AJ's behavior was very much like Jessica's...........I've also told you that Mattie (such an angel child) is VERY much like Jeana (don't say I didn't warn you!! :earseek: )

LOL!!! Well maybe I should have A.J. spend the night with you in December when I am "working"! LOL Sounds like he would fit in just fine!

Oh, and Mattie....my little angel child, just climbed over the chain link fence and was in my neighbors back yard!!!! He is not even 2 yet!!!! :earseek: How on earth am I suppose to get through the next few years with him?????

I told you to put a bowling ball in his diaper. At least it would slow him down just a bit. ;) :rotfl:

I could put a bowling ball in his diaper, chain him to a tree and turn the backyard into a skating rink and he would still escape! :moped:

I totally agree here. What's wrong with letting your kids justplay after school- they will have YEARS of homework ahead of them. If you really need to keep your child busy, print off some worksheets from the net. Especially if your child struggles in school, extra help at home is probably necessary. But if your child does just fine, I wouldn't sweat it. I don't think it's fair to expect the teacher to change how she does things things.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the years my kids don't get much homework. I get to decide what they work on at home. Some years they get tons of stuff that isn't the stuff they need to work on - and then I don't feel like I should add more. They miss out on practicing what they really need, so they can finish their homework!

This year my son got an easy homework teacher. He only has one math worksheet each night and his spelling words - less than 10 minutes and he's a fifth grader. I've added 10 minutes of writing each night (at least - sometimes he gets involved and does more), occasional work on his keyboarding program, and then reading before bed. He does it willingly because in fifth grade his brother had the other teacher and he had 30 minutes of reading, 30 minutes of writing, plus math and spelling!

At "homework time" with a first grader I'd start by doing some math flashcards and some handwriting practice (focus on certain letters or copy simple sentences). Then do some reading at bedtime. As the year goes on, you'll be able to see if there are other areas that need work.

I find it MUCH easier as a parent to work with them on flashcards, journal writing, etc. than to toil through their homework assignments. When I taught first grade I sent home "homework time" suggestions, but no specific worksheets. At that time (13 years ago), it was very rare to assign homework prior to 3rd grade.

I just graduated high school in June, so it wasn't *that* long ago that I was in 1st grade. If we had any homework at all, it was only to bring in something for sharing time the next day, or something of that sort. We NEVER had homework, not until the 3rd grade. That was a school wide policy. Even in 3rd grade we only had homework 4 nights a week. And I went to one of the best elementary schools in the state.
