This morning I read on another board that there was an issue with some of the fridges and they are being removed and replaced. It does nto appear to affect DVC or cabins, but it will take several months and some people will not have a fridge when they go.
I wanted to make sure that those of you ( including my family) that need it for medical reasons is aware of this. My TA called them this morning and they said that our resort ( POR) is affected by this, but each resort does have a limited number of fridges that are by request only.

Where did you hear this and did they give any reason for the issue?

If its affecting a lot of places, it might be a recall of some type.
The DVC one and two bedrooms have actual refrigerator /freezers like would be in people's houses. The DVC studios all have under counter dorm type refrigerators.

The other resorts have dorm type refrigerators built into cabinets.

it also being reported on the unplugged and theme park forums i think it a defect in the fridges they have to fix. i am sure they are doing it as quickly as they can but they have to make sure they are safe so they have to take them away then replace them.

Thanks.
It sounds like the main issue is they are overheating inside the cabinets.

If your at Disney and your room has a fridge in it they won't remove it until you check out so don't worry if your in a room with one they will only remove once unoccupied by the guest.

I received an email from my DVP today about the fridges. This it's our first trip and we are staying at CBR and we are going so we can take our daughter. She has special needs and also takes heart meds that have to be refrigerated. The DVP thought we would get a fridge since it's for meds. Now that this is going on, what's going to stop people from saying they need a fridge for meds, when they might not. I'm now considering canceling the whole package and staying off property:(

Don't cancel they have to supply them for meds so if they don't have any to bring from them they can get from Another resort. or put you in a room that has one that has not be taken of yet. I would call Disney and let them know you need one ahead of time. So they known they have to put you in a room that already replaced a fridge or in a room that has one and wait to replace or bring up a fridge to the room for you. Disney has to go off the honor system they have to trust that you are asking for one for medical needs. They are doing this as quickly as they can I aka sure they won't take one out and not replace with in a certain amount of days. What will slow them down is supply and empty rooms. Since they won't take them out if someone in the room

The same thing that prevents them from taking all the accessible hotel rooms. There may be a few who suck but for the most part, people who ask for a fridge and are told that they are reserved for people with medical needs will simply go without because it's the decent thing to do.

Unlike the accessible accommodations, refrigerators are not only for those with special needs. There are many families that use those refrigerators for food and beverages and bring their own breakfast or lunch supplies. This is an amenity listed in all rooms that will be unavailable, not just an amenity that will be unavailable in accessible rooms. I don't think a family of 5 staying at POR who is bringing milk and cereal for breakfast to make their vacation affordable are doing anything wrong or, "not the decent thing to do", by requesting a refrigerator if they find their room is lacking one when they check in while this is happening. Nor are the people who didn't know about this and ordered groceries prior to arrival that would spoil. They have no idea if someone checking in in 2 days may have insulin or another medication that needs to be refrigerated and to be honest it's not their concern. It's up to the resort to figure out how to accommodate the medical need, by procuring another refrigerator from a different resort or vendor if necessary, if someone with a medical need requests one and they are all allocated.

We were told by the CMs we spoke to this afternoon concerning our upcoming reservation that the fridges would be first come, first served while they're being replaced. If you have medicine that requires refrigeration and this affects you, I would imagine the resort will arrange to get a fridge from another resort for you in the event that all of their supply is already out.

Fwiw, I think this is going to be done pretty efficiently and with minimal impact whenever possible. It sounded like they're going to start with unoccupied rooms first and then try to do the rest of the switching after guests check out and prior to the next arrival.
