Just my $.02:
I'm flying Song (Delta) on a red-eye out of LAX for my WDW trip in early May. While I was sitting on the fence these past few weeks deciding whether or not I wanted to finally go to WDW, I kept monitoring the airfare: $215. Well, that's pretty cheap. Then 11pm newscast last Tuesday night announces all major airlines having fare increase, "effective immediately." Yikes! Went online and bought that ticket within 10 minutes after the news was over. Yay, fare was still $215!
Next day, Wed., checked the fare again to see if the news report was a bunch of bull. No increase. A bunch of bull. Oh, well, at least everything was now decided and no more fence-sitting.
Next day, Thurs., checked again. Yes, I'm compulsive. And I love a bargain. Well, I had my bargain and there was no bull: the airfare had jumped. Not $10. Not $20. Not $30. Not--okay! it jumped $62.00. The fare is now = $277.00, which amounts to nearly a 30% increase.
I was shocked at the size of the jump, but, of course, relieved for my good fortune. And, of course, I took it as a sign that I was absolutely supposed to be taking this trip and spending 7 x my cheap airfare on the MYW package for 10 days (got another sign when NASA announced the return-to-flight is scheduled for a day I'd planned to not only be in Fla., but had designated to visit KSC). Yes, the universe had spoken.
Seriously, I agree with a few of the earlier posters that all things considered, air fare is generally cheaper than it was in times past, and, even with the current increase(s), is still reasonable. (Flying today is not your father's stock market. You get my drift....) I've never flown Song, but have read/heard good things. Designed to compete with the likes of Jet Blue, et.al., they do NOT serve meals; they DO serve beverages. They also have leather seats and individual televisions accessing broadcast and cable (I nearly wept when the agent told me), as well as other entertainment options to amuse and while away the flight time. People, I will GLADLY forego the rubber meal in exchange for that television ANY DAY!
TT
(BTW, regarding those "legacy" airlines mentioned above: meal or not, extra leg room or not, if American Airlines doesn't improve their customer service, they won't need the dire financial straits of United to find themselves floundering; who needs 'em, and who cares about "legacy" anymore when you are simply treated better from the moment you call in to get info, (and subsequently get at least as good of a flight environment and service (in Coach)) by the likes of Song, Southwest, Jet Blue, TED--all of which are getting high marks?? I used to be such a fan of AA, and have so badly wanted them to remain at the top of the stature heap, but I'm on the verge of never using them again--the lady at Aadvantge pleaded for me to give them another chance--we'll see when she calls back next week with an answer re: the issue du jour....So disappointing. My experience. My opinion.)
