No Fly Zone

I haven't heard that...all I've heard is "Restricted Flight Areas" around major cities, nuclear plants etc. I wouldn't really doubt it though.

I just heard about WDW and DL on CNN.

I just read the Security Statement issued by Ridge concerning issues being taken for Homeland Security and I didn't see anything about Disney being mentioned. It was pretty general (like Beauty said) "Restricted Flight areas"

My mom just called and told me that. But she also heard something about smaller airplanes. So maybe it is just small commuter planes that are not allowed to fly over DW, DL and over NYC. We are leaving in 10 days  and I am not sure how this will effect our travel plans.

I am not sure how this will effect our travel plans.

It won't. I'm sure this deals with civil avaition (read: private pilots...non commerical) Have A GREAT visit! :):)

Thanks-you.

It is our first visit to Disney. My kids can't wait. I just hope they don't ground any flights because of the pending war.

I was just coming here to post a related question. DH and I are supposed to be flying to Seattle on Friday. My MIL just called me to say that she was talking to a couple of US Air pilots in a hotel lobby who said that when we go to war, all flights will probably be grounded!?!? This just doesn't make any sense to me, but she sounded so convinced. Is there any way it could be true?

It's always a possibility that flights will be grounded but I don't think it will happen. My professor is scheduled to be at a conference in LA on Friday and isn't worried that his flight will be cancelled. He has nationally commentated on terrorism and war's effects so hearing it from him makes me think the planes will still be in the air unless something bad (other than war) happens.

The Federal Aviation Administration Tuesday announced that aircraft flying in the New York City and Washington, D.C. areas, and near Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and Disneyland in Anaheim, California, will be restricted. Unless commercial or private pilots are granted specific exemptions from air traffic controllers, no flights are allowed within a 3-mile radius around the parks or below 3,000 feet.

What else I know is that you have to have a flight plan to fly into New York DC or the DC4. You will have to be talking with ground the whole time you are within the area. Usual previous restrictions remain, such as flights near nuclear facilities and so forth.

Not to be mean, but I hope we blow Saddam off the face of the earth. I am ready for this to be over.

Don't you just love it when the USAir pilots say things? Perhaps they figure this will be the death knell for their airline. However, airplanes flew during the Gulf War, they flew during the Vietnam War and they flew within a few days of 9/11. I am pretty sure they will fly unless there is a specific threat.

I think those USAir pilots are just hoping for free vacation days.

In Chicago they are implementing a no fly zone for small aircraft that take off from Meigs Field, which is right on the lakefront. I do not believe that includes commercial flights from O'Hare. Mayor Daley asked for a no fly zone for commercial flights after 9/11 and was turned down by the FAA.

Yes, I heard about the no-fly zone tonight. It did specify WDW and DL, plus the cities mentioned.

I think the media is using the WRONG terms here. What we have in the US is restricted airspace. A NO FLY ZONE is what we have in Iraq. There is a difference. In resticted airspace the errant pilot gets a warning to get his A@@ out of the airspace before he gets shot down. He/She may also get a fighter pilot escort to the airport where the FAA will grill him. In a NO FLY ZONE, we shoot first and ask questions later! And to be honest we don't want a NO FLY ZONE. Most of the people who wander into restricted airspace are private pilots who just screwed up!! Happens all the time. If they shot them down they would be killing people who made a simple misstake, plus falling aircraft parts can be dangerous!
