No Energy....I mean NONE!

Okay, normally I'm not one to check in on a bulletin board about health issues. Really, I'm not! :p But this was just so weird, I wondered if it perhaps was some kind of bug. It's happened to me twice now in the past month; once I was sure it was a mild bug, since my kids had had a stomach bug a few days earlier. But last night, I have no idea what brought it on. My boss said her brother had spoken to her of identical symptoms, which makes me think it is a bug....

basically, I just have NO energy. Zero. Zip! None! But I don't ache, I don't feel feverish, I'm not even sleepy--just zapped. It was so bad the first time, I had to stop halfway up one flight of stairs to rest on my way to bed. That was about 2 weeks ago. Last night, it was so bad I could barely type on the computer--and had to get off the phone because the act of holding the phone to my ear was just too exhausting. I also seem to completely lose my appetite. I'm not nauseated (sp?), but just have no interest in eating anything, even though I know that logically, I should be hungry. I know, I know....I should go to the doc, and if it happens again, I definitely will. But it disappears the next day (I feel absolutely fine today). Oh, and I'm not doing anything unusual, either...not exerting myself physically, or spending time in the sun, not taking (or forgeting to take) new meds. Anyone else experience this lately, or know someone who has?

Could it be the humid weather we've been having up in New England?

I know the humidity really does me in.

Esmeralda, the humidity gets to me, too, but this seems to be even worse than that.....it is definitely possible, although I don't know why those particular times it would be worse than others, since we've had many humid days here this summer (too many!).

Hopefully it's nothing...

My personal experience:
I was exhausted, would come home from work and fall asleep on the couch. Did not want to make dinner, could barely do anything.
Went to the doctor for a check up...turns out I had low thyroid.

Go to the doctor just to make sure.

The only time I feel like that is the first trimester of pregnancy.

I was going to suggest Chronic Fatigue Syndrome also.

I seriously don't think humidity would have an affect on someone with that intensity.

I would suggest seeing your doctor and checking the usual culprits like anemia (and pregnancy! ;) ) and if a normal blood workup doesn't show anything then talk to him/her about CFS.

Take care :)

Mine was low thyroid and sleep apnea. I wasn't even falling asleep during the day I just felt like I had been hit by a Mac truck and my DH said I had started snoring.

If it continues I would get some blood work done to be safe.

I was going to mention anemia too... if you have an iron deficency, it can zap your energy fast. Lots of people are iron deficient and don't realize it, but it can cause some major problems!

I would see your doc and ask them to run some basic labs and check your levels =)

I have a prof with Chronic Fatigue and she is MORE than just tired, she can't even get out of bed. Literally. Doesn't sound like that, to me, unless she just has a really bad case... I think a deficency is alot more likely.

I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Sometimes it is hard to describe how totally debilitating fatigue can be.

CFS is really the diagnosis of last resort. It literally can take years to come down to that diagnosis - everything else has to be eliminated. Don't even think about that now - mainly because there is nothing you can do about it.

You easily could have a sinus infection. My doctor says that it is possible to have a low grade sinus infection and not know it. A head cat scan can easily determine that.

Sleep apnea is another possibility.

I don't know how old you are but something called peri-menopause (years before menopause) can also bring on extreme fatigue.

Humidity and heat can really affect my CFS.

The good news for you is that CFS rarely (maybe never?) stops after one day.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. *sigh* I was really hoping bunches of people would pop in with a "Yeah, me too!!" so I could sign it off as merely a bug. Because I'm feeling so well the rest of the time, I'll wait and see if it happens again; if it does, no doubt at all I'm going straight to the doc. (I'd go right away if I had better health insurance, but being that I pay for everything but hospital stays out-of-pocket, I tend to put off a visit to the dr.'s office unless it is something dire and/or persistent.) I was anemic as a teen (presented as fainting spells) and had pregnancy-induced Hashimoto's disease (low thyroid) after both pregnancies (went away after about a year both times) and got tested for both fairly regularly, although I don't think I've been tested the last couple of years because they've been all clear for so long. So those are both possibilities, given my history. As far as pregnancy :earseek: , well, that's a possibility, too, although my birth control is very reliable (Depo-prevera). But no birth control (aside from abstinence) is 100% effective, as we all know. Sleep apnea, too, is a possibility; I'm overweight and a light snorer although I've never had fatigue first thing in the morning, and usually feel rested when I get up.

Ah well....mystery still unsolved....hopefully it was something flukey and won't happen again. Thanks again for all the helpful replies. :)

Mono, low thyroid and PG were my first thoughts. Could it be depression manifesting into physical symptoms?

Bingo!!! Depo-prevera ...how long have you been on depo? I had to stop the shots because of chronic fatigue related to depo. Maybe you should look into that as the source. Good luck and best wishes!

I hope you find the source of your fatigue, BedKnobbery2. It's hard to enjoy life when you're always tired. I too, had anemia as a child, and still occasionally have problems with sinus. It makes me want to sleep during the day.

Has anyone had luck with energy supplements from health food stores, or anything like Bee-Alive,

http://www.beealive.com/index.cfm?aID=0 or is this just another bogus product ?

Hi beth! I've already had mono, and I'm sure it isn't depression....but the mono comparison is right on, that's kinda what it was like!

I'm starting to feel more and more like if it wasn't a bug, maybe it *is* the humidity and heat...maybe I was a little dehydrated and just didn't know it. Because when I think about all the other possibilities, it seems terrifically unlikely that it would go away as quickly as it has.

Hootis, I've been on depo for over 2 years now. I'm actually due for my shot next week (diff. dr. than my primary care doc, so not the one to ask about most of the issues here, although I am going to ask for a pregnancy test so I can rule that out, and will of course ask if it could be the depo).

Lady Cluck, I've never tried that product, so I'm afraid I can't help! :(
