I hope everyone doesn't think I'm crazy.... Our family won't be able to go to WDW again until 2012 ... We are paying off debt and I am starting grad school in Sept. I am going to get a MS in Ed and get certified to teach. I am a social worker now and want a change. Even though it is a long time, I am looking forward to going back to Disney after I graduate and put some debt to bed by the summer of 2012. Just need some encouragement and hugs that it will all be worth waiting/working for.... Thanks....

I haven't been to WDW since January 2002. And we probably won't go back until 2012ish or so.

As much as I love the magic, it just doesn't happen all that often for us. No ridicule from me!

And honestly, it makes the planning and anticipation better for me!

We also won't be returning to WDW until 2012, and our last trip was in 2006. The last few years we haven't been able to go, and now we want to wait until DD is a bit older to do her first trip. I'm already planning to go all-out. I figure I have 3 more years to save up for the trip, and have already started charging *everything* on my Disney Visa to get as many reward dollars as possible.

Good luck with school and your career change - Disney will always be there!

Congrats on deciding to go back to school!
Just wanted to say, I think many people were annoyed when I said I wanted to wait til I was done w/ school to marry fiance (although we had a daughter together). Money was an issue, after 3 long years of school, I will be done in Dec and we will begin our planning.
::hugs:: and good luck, I think you made a good choice and 2012 will be here before you know it.

It's been a few years since I last went and it isn't great, but I am also waiting until I am debt free. Just think of the fun I can have doing the vacation I've always wanted to do for the whole family (adult children and all).

It will be difficult to become debt free but so worth it! Good luck and stay positive, it will happen!

I know it is a long way off....but have you thought about doing some rewards programs to help? There is a board here just for rewards programs so you won't sign up for the ones that don't pay. Just a thought but it might help. If you decide to do them, make another email on yahoo (free) just for your programs. You don't have to use your credit card for a lot of these though it does take longer to get some rewards when you just click emails. But hey, a free $25 gift card every couple of months is worth clicking a few emails. Just a thought and it might help to know that you are at least doing something to get you there.

LOL, you sound like our family. I am working on firing our creditors due to DD starting college in three years. Also, I am starting grad school in the fall as well! I am currently a teacher but am returning to school to become a librarian. Best of luck to us both as we wait... :)

I'm starting grad school in a few weeks, too. :goodvibes I've been a part time legal assistant, but I'm going to school to be a Speech Language Pathologist. We are going to Disneyland next week on a family visit, but then it will be about 2012 for us, too--though maybe then, it will be as a DVC owner. :lovestruc

OP, hang in there--we're pretty much in your boat. We were going to go several times this year to see DD19 if she got in the CP, but she didn't :( . Now we're in the process of remodeling our house, selling it, moving into something larger (with a larger mortgage), all the while paying college tuition for 1 now, and a 2nd in the fall of 2010. If all this happens the way we anticipate it happening, it'll be quite a while before we take another vacation, WDW or otherwise. Just too many other more important priorities.

I wasn't brave enough to start a post about this exact dilemma, as we won't be back for a few years as well- but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one pining for Disney!! We went last year and won't be back for 2 years at least. The kids want to go now, as do I, but DH wants to visit family in Las Vegas first :scared1:- not my kind of vacation, though :earsboy: I come to the boards once a day, just to keep up the magic.

We won't be going again until at least 2012 either, if we're lucky!

I took my DD (than age 6) back in 2006. I'm so glad we did it then! I had wanted to go back again before now, but it just hasn't happened, and now I don't know when it will. :sad1: My DD is 10 now, so I hope to take her again before she's too old and hopefully talk DH into going next time!

DH is laid off at this time, so we don't have the money right now, maybe by 2012! I hope!

How refreshing to read your post! Usually I open posts here from people who don't have the $$ and they want us to tell them that it's still OK to go even though they don't have enough $$ to cover their bills.

Kudos to you for being a responsible parent and teaching your children the right way to do things! Disney will always be there and you'll enjoy your vacation that much more if you're not worried about how you're going to pay for it. :thumbsup2

We are right there with you! After our last trip (Nov. 2007), we said no more trips until our debt is totally paid off and we'll have the cash to pay off the trip before we go. So, that puts us into 2012. And since we like the Nov/Dec timeframe, we're talking the end of the year.

I just keep thinking about how much more fun we'll have knowing that we don't have any bills waiting for us at home and that we'll be able to really enjoy the trip without worrying about the budget. (Not that we plan on going crazy, but it will just be nice to have the option to splurging.)

It will be well worth it!!

No, you aren't crazy!

DH and I haven't been on any kind of trip (other than to visit family) since our honeymoon in 2005. We might do a WDW trip spring of '10, depending on a lot of different factors. If not, then we are shooting for 2011, we should be debt free by then and at that point it's a matter of just getting our work schedules to cooperate. We are only thinking of going while still having CC debt because quite frankly, we are both burnt out and WDW is actually one of the cheapest trips we can take.

ITA! :thumbsup2

It makes me crazy when someone posts "oh whoa is me I have so much debt and no cash and I only have $10 for groceries, etc, etc, etc" but they have a ticker for an upcoming trip to WDW! Oh, or they know of an upcoming layoff/paycut and want to know if they should cancel a planned WDW trip. Hello?!

Good for you OP! Both on paying off your debt and going back to school!

As for us - we also won't be back to WDW for several years. We have one loan left to pay off and we are working hard to have it paid off by March 2011. After that loan is gone all we'll have is the mortgage and car payments (which we'll work on paying off early too). We are also working hard on building our savings account.

Sure, I'll miss WDW but it feels so good to see our debt balance going down and our savings account balance going up! :teacher:

Maybe all those of us who won't be going should start making plans for a Dis meet at WDW in 2012! :thumbsup2

Glad to know there are others like me. :)

We're hoping for 2010, but I'm not even sure. We had planned to go in November of this year, but it's not happening.

DH got a lay off from his job in May. He still hasn't been called back, but they are continuing the family health insurance until the end of July. The company thinks he'll be called back by then. Right now he's working 1 day per week.

My older son is in college. We saved and saved since he was little for college. He just finished his first year. Wow, it's so expensive. Everything adds up so quickly.

Disney is definitely on the back burner for us. I'd sure like to go, but not unless I win a trip.

We own DVC and aren't going down this year. We are every other yearers - generally speaking. It works best for us to plan that way.

I like my vices in moderation.

I think you can easily get the impression around here that EVERYONE goes AT LEAST once a year (sometimes I feel like my kids "but everyone else is going to Disney for Free Dining!") But I don't think that is really the case at all - a lot of us don't have signatures with yearly trips and countdown timers for three months from now.

I'd sure like to go, but not unless I win a trip.
Wouldn't that be nice!? I enter every contest I see to win a trip to WDW. So far no luck, lol.

My partner actually lost her job not long before our 2006 trip, but we decided to go anyway because everything except our food was already paid for and it was close enough to the trip that we'd have paid a penalty for canceling.

2007 & 2008 we took our meager vacation dollars elsewhere. (I know, the horror!) And now we have our DB, and want to wait until she's nearly 3 to take her on her first Disney trip. Which brings us to March/April 2012.

I honestly don't think I'd want to go to WDW more often than once every couple of years. While I LOVE the Mouse, I want to experience other places as well. I'm kind of jonesing for it right now, because it's been over 3 years since my last trip, but I'm also happy to wait until DD is old enough to really experience everything for the first time.
