No Dining Plan 72 hrs before?!?!?

I called today to book a last minute trip for this weekend and I wanted to add the Deluxe Dining plan to my reservation. Keep in mind that I am booking everything last minute and the CM tells me I cant book the dinning cause it is 72 hrs before check in...

Can someone tell me if this is right and why it is?

Yes, the CM is correct. For DVC stays, it is 48 hours. Could you rent points instead of doing a cash reservation?

It has always been that way, as the dining plans are a package add-on, and after the 72 hours prior to arrival the packages cannot be adjusted to include add-ons. This is also the reason you can't add a dining plan at check-in.

I would think since Disney is in the business of making money, they would gladly take your money. I wonder why the 72 hour window?

Because the way the system is set up they cannot do package add-ons after that time. I think that may be when the reservation is switched from CRO to the resorts, and the resorts cannot add the dining plan. If you make a reservation within 3 days it may go directly to the resort so they can assign a room.
