Is everyone required to go through the full body scanner? If you don't want to have your children scanned and they are under 12, what is the pat down now?

Can we still just go through the regular metal detector one at MCO?

Not everyone goes through, it is a random selection process. I didn't see anyone going through them at MCO when I was there two weeks ago, but my mom was selected to go through the new scanner when we were leaving Boston. I have no idea what the percentage is of people chosen to go through.

That isn't what we are being told. We are now being told that pat-downs for kids 12 and under are going to be less 'aggressive'..whatever that means.

I would think that by March, things will have calmed down. You may find there is little reason for any concern by then.

As of now, only a very small percentage of people are being pulled from the regular security line and sent through the new scanners.

When we flew AirTran from Boston. Everyone went thru the full body scanner so I think it depends on the terminal. If you didn't want to go thru or they thought they saw something then they did the pat down. My DH had the pat down and he likened it to getting frisked at a sports stadium. Had no issues with it.

Actually, they are now reporting there is no pat down for those under 12. I am still trying to do some research on this to get the definitive answer. I believe Janet N. came out and stated this at the press conference.

I didn't even see a scanner so if they were doing so it was few and far between.

IMO thats just what MCO needs to make their security a greater nightmare than it already is.

I agree. MCO's security is a nightmare on a good day...I can't imagine what this is going to do to wait times.

I will give you that. MCO is the biggest nightmare as far as security and TSA. And this was long before the "new methods". Not sure why that is??? All other airports I have experienced have been so nice and helpful.

And the metal detector takes maybe 4 seconds to walk through. The scanning process took me over a minute. You do the math.


Hope you like 5 and 6 hour wait times.

I think it is the weird setup, where you have to merge with three other lines after getting your boarding pass checked and they all sort of veer off to the right in a mass of people. I was saying to my mom as we went through two weeks ago that it seemed like a really bad setup for families because it is so easy to be separated from the rest of your party once the agent checks your boarding pass and sends you into the merge for the metal detector.

Did the scanner in BOS and it took 4 seconds. Did the math all by myself and it didn't take any longer.

As another pointed out; I think MCO is more due to their set up then anything else.

Yep...me too. Walked in, put my arms over my head, stood there, walked out. If it took more than 5 seconds I would be surprised. And, my belongings were not all that far from me....I could see them at all times.

Of course, I may just refuse the scanner if I'm chosen again. Then I can experience the pat-down first hand.

Yep we'll be patted if the scanner is used next time. This past trip at CHM and MCO they had them, but we just walked through the metal detector. At MCO they DID swab my laptop, though.

We're wearing as LITTLE clothes through the security line as possible (jackets in our carryons) so if we do get patted, it will save a few minutes. I'll be the one in the winter who is in summer clothes until AFTER we get through security. As Peter Greenburg says "dress after you get through security, not before".

DH and I have zipping through security down to a science. Well, ok, I have it down to a science... DH just follows along and does what I tell him We're the ones who have pre-portioned tip $ in an envelope for the curbside check-in folks, our ID's paper clipped to our pre-printed boarding passes out and ready to go at the security line, shoes off with all metal, cell phones, wallets, you name it removed from any pocket and in our bags.... yep, we're one of THOSE people...

...those people that you LOVE to be behind in the TSA line because we zip in and zip out without delay. You're welcome, society

I was in the different scanner, the millimeter one. After I came out, we waited quite a while for the person attending the scanning booth to be "radioed" that I was OK.

Then they followed that up with other patdowns. It was no 4 seconds. At least a minute.

Detroit, Delta. It was on the main floor, where the airlines are. Not the floor below where you can also go through security from parking.

We did not do frankly a very good job of communicating initially that there would be an exemption, if you will, from the thorough pat-down for children 12 and under. That was under review when the policy came out, and so we have clarified that. It does not apply to children 12 and under.

So, 13 and up — there's no exemption.


However, it is unclear what he is talking about, the Standard Pat Down, Alarm Resolution Pat Down, or perhaps a third yet undefined.

Of course, I may just refuse the scanner if I'm chosen again. Then I can experience the pat-down first hand.

Just remember that not opting out is no guarantee that you will not receive a genital grope.
