No Day But Today- FINAL post on page 40!

Another great report. Your pictures were all fantastic. I thought all the animal photos were especially great- the tiger ones most of all. And the video was great too. "Seasons of Love" is one of my favorite songs, so it was nice to hear it included along with "No Day". :) Well done!

I can't wait for this one!!! I'm looking forward to the MGM one, too, just because so far, it's my least favorite park, and I'm hoping the book will help me appreciate it more. I wonder if they'll ever do a Downtown Disney one?

Not sure if anyone has noticed, but there's a new addition in my signature! It's not 100% for sure yet, but it's a pretty good chance of happening! :woohoo:

Woohoo! You're going to the Star Wars weekend... More TRs from Crystal!!! :cheer2:

I'd love to see Disney do an entire collection of the books - one for every theme park, water park and Downtown Disney/Pleasure Island. I'd love to see something on the AC, wouldn't you? I just picked up the EPCOT book so I can't wait until tomorrow evening (hooray for weekends) when I can find a comfy spot and start reading it.

i just noticed the star wars weekend addition...when are your possible travel dates..i will be in the world in June, if i have a crystal sighting it will be very exciting :)

That's exacty why I'm hoping for a Downtown one! :thumbsup2 There's so much nifty stuff in the AC that they could do a whole book on it!

The Epcot one is really good, you'll love it!

I'm planning on the 2nd weekend, June 8th. Ray Park is going to be there, so I've gotta go!!! I've gotta wait for AP rates to come out to make sure I can do it, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Crystal,
I saw this the other day and immediately thought of you:

Also, do you know that the History Channel makes a DVD on the making of WDW and your buddy is in it a lot talking about the creation of AK. It was made before EE so that's not discussed (I've seen that show on TV) but you might enjoy it.

Aww, I love it! Maybe someday Crocky will get a friend! :teeth

More treasures coming up in a matter of minutes!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have come to the final installment of treasures! Today's post is all about the loot that you can wear!

Up first, the two t-shirts I picked up! (I also got a grey AK sweatshirt, but it's in the laundry, and I'm much too lazy to dig it out, so you'll have to use your imagination for that one!)

Shirt #1- Animal Kingdom T Shirt!

akshirt.jpg

akshirt2.jpg

Close-up of the graphic. It's a velvety-type soft fuzzy material.

This shirt and I have a love/hate relationship. In theory, I think it's really cute! On me, however, not so much. See, I originally just grabbed the size large from the store, guessing it would fit. However, when I went to wear it the next day, it was WAY too big for me. So I returned it and got a medium. That one was SO tight you could... well... I can't come up with a good metaphor here. But it gave you a little more information about the shape of my body than you get without at least buying me dinner. So I had to return it yet again, and got the Large again. The Large that I never wear because it's too freakin' big. I am seriously tempted to try to find a tailor or something, like they're always suggesting on What Not To Wear!

WHY? Why are Disney's sizes like this? All of the shirts seem to either run in a) Men's sizes, or b) tiny teenage girl sizes. That is the only explanation why one shirt is too big and a size Large, and another is a 2X and barely fits. Stop screwin' with my head, Disney!!! We're already a little self-conscious about eating zebra domes three meals a day, the size weirdness doesn't help!

But moving on to shirt #2...

jack1.jpg

jack2.jpg

JACK!

The funny thing is that I picked this up as an impulse purchase on my last World of Disney shopping trip. I wasn't sure if I'd ever actually wear it, but it has turned out to be one of my favorite shirts! It fits perfectly, it's a great material, and when it's Jack Sparrow's head is on my chest, which means that all is good in the world.

Both shirts were somewhere between $22-$26.

And finally, rounding out this collection of treasures....

pearl.jpg

This is my pearl! I really like the one that I picked- apparently I'm an excellent oyster selector! (Think I can put that on my resumee?)

That picture is obviously zoomed a lot for detail. In reality, it's about this size:

pearlsmall.jpg

I was able to pick up a silver chain for it at Wal-Mart for something like $10. I really recommend buying your chain separatly when you get home, unless you're just dying to wear it on your trip- you'll find a much better selection, and not nearly as overpriced!

And thus concludes a look at my treasures from afar!

Still to come:
-The joys and woes of photopass
-The End: Tips, memories, and final thoughts

Also, I'm really, really tempted to start my Disneyween pre-trip soon! I've got SO much planning for it going on that having a trip thread for it would help me stay organized! However, as you may have noticed in my signature, I may be going to Star Wars Weekend in June, so is it wrong to start a pre-trip for an October trip when you'll have a June trip first? Oh, the ethics of trip report writing!!!

Ohhh i love the shirts! haha and yes when jack sparrow is on your chest everything is good in the world. lol

oh and if you dont mind me asking how much was your pearl setting? thats very cute and simple just what i like! Maybe ill have to get that one for my pearl in Oct.

I don't have the reciepts handy, but it was something like $15 to pick the pearl, and $17 for the setting. I like it because it's simple, but pretty :)

Since we are all HUGE fans of you and your TRs, I think it's safe to say that you should start the pre-trip reports for both your Disneyween and Star Wars Weekend trips, and do them in whichever order works best for you. That way, we can all pipe in as appropriate and you can use the thread to keep all of your plans in line ;)

Reading all about your upcoming trips and plans might just convince more of us to add new charges to our credit cards and plan trips that will coincide with yours!

I have been reading your report and sorry for lurking and not saying anything sooner. You have inspired me to take more pics on my trip in 5 weeks (and to go to AKL to try a zebra dome). I love the pearl and the setting, very pretty.

Can't wait to read your pretrip report, go ahead start them both.

Photopass: The good, the bad, and oh man, I look ugly!

Photopass is a great invention. Back in the day, I usually bought one photo per trip. Now Disney can pretty much count on getting $100 out of me every trip, because I must have the cd!

Putting all of your photo info on a card is genius. Much better than having to keep track of the little reciepts they used to give you!

Being able to see your photos online, and purchase them up to a month after you get home? Also brilliant!

I can't wait until the system expands to more ride photos (right now it just includes Test Track), and I really, really hope it expands to DCL! (Their current photo package is something like $200 for 10 pictures!)

Basically, Photopass rocks.

The only problem is, not everyone knows how to take a picture.

If you take no other advice away from the eight zillion pages of this trip report, please remember this!

Do not count on the one photo you had taken in front of the castle turning out well. Get many, many photos taken!

Many!

I thought I'd share some of my adventures in photopass- the ups and downs!

I have to preface this by saying I'm not that hard to take a picture of. I don't mean that I'm photogenic by any means. Quite the contrary, usually. But I used to have a job very similar to being a photopass photographer, so I know what their job is like, a little too well!

Let's start at the MK with the classic Castle shot, shall we?

1bad.jpg

How crushed would you be if you only stopped for one castle photo on your trip, and it turned out like this?

Granted, the low light conditions make this a little tricky, but usually, the photopass person snaps two or three pictures- this one only took one! (Also, say hi to kid in orange behind me!)

Luckily, I also have:

1good.jpg

I love this one!

Ready for more Crystal humiliation?

2bad.jpg

DUDE. Turn your children away from the computer screen, they may have nightmares!

Usually on sunny days, I pose with my sunglasses on to avoid just this. But let's overlook my squinty-eyed fish face. WHAT is up with the background?

Welcome to Disney's Mal Ng!

This is a problem that popped up over and over and over on my photopass disc. They would take a picture of me that gave you no real idea where I was! What's the point of that?

Slightly better?

2good.jpg

I'm not too fond of my own image in this photo (What the heck am I doing with my hands?), but at least the background is much better! You can see where I am, and what's going on- it sets the stage for a story. (Although I do have an elephant growing out of the top of my head, but the doctors say that will turn out ok.)

Another example of crazy background choices at AK?

4bad.jpg

Okay, so the lush jungle thing is kind of neat, but... THERE IS A GIANT TREE RIGHT THERE! If they had just zoomed out a little, you could have seen the Tree of Life in the picture! D'oh!

(And the photographer took four photos of me... none of which included the Tree! But I still like her because we had a fun conversation about my shirt and the wonder that is Target.)

Finally, a big part of taking pictures is knowing when to click the button.

3bad.jpg

Um... NOT ready yet! I was in the process of being dipped here!

3good.jpg

The better version... but still, they took it too soon! After this, I bet further back so that he was really dipping me, Gone with the Wind style. It would have made a great photo, but apparently the photopass person missed it!

(Note to self: For future pirate photos, let your hair down! And take off your frickin sweatshirt!)

There are many, many more awful photos of me that I could share, but really, you've suffered enough. Stop by my house sometime, and I'll show you the series of photos in front of Everest where a giant piece of my hair is sticking out of the side of my head and blowing in the wind, giving me a horn that is animated if you flip through them fast enough. Fun for the whole family! (And of course, the mountain in the background is blurry, but that piece of hair is perfectly in focus!)

Coming up as soon as I can walk back across the room to my laptop and get it ready to post: THE FINAL POST! :woohoo:

Crystal you should send that off to WDW you're so funny but so true, loved your TR!

I laughed so hard about these two pictures that the other two people that are in the room right now think I've lost my mind... but they're so funny! :rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao:

No Day But Today- Final Thoughts

I gave in, you guys. I’m typing this up in one MS Word window, but in another is a blank document titled “Disneyween: The Pre-Trip.” I couldn’t hold out any longer!

But before I let myself post that, I need to finish this one up! Otherwise I’m going to end up with 3 trip reports going on at the same time, and for a girl who can’t do even two things at once on the best of days, that’s just not a good idea!

I decided to break this down into three easy lists: 10 Best Things about this trip, 10 Worst Things, and 10 Tips I’d like to share. And then I’ll probably do some good old fashioned blah blah blah at the end to sum up and get all nostalgic and emotional. And then I get a cookie for actually finishing.

Sound like a plan?

Good!

10 Best Things

It was hard to narrow this down to just 10, let me tell you! But you probably expected that. These are in no particular order.

1- Seeing Joe Rohde at Animal Kingdom!

This one’s pretty obvious, huh? I still can’t explain how cool this was. I got to see my hero, and it was all by crazy twists of chance! Very cool. Getting to see the tiger checkup was pretty cool, too!

2- Tea at the Grand Floridian

We’ve been wanting to do this for years now, and I’m so glad that we finally did. I almost never do table service meals (and this isn’t technically a “meal”), but this was totally worth splurging on. It was so nice to just sit there for three hours over our tea and scones and soak up the atmosphere, enjoying conversation and the rare Disney time when you’re not rushing to do anything. Bliss! The tea was SO good, the scones were heaven. We’re planning to do this again!

3- Lodge Tours

First of all, these were free! What’s free at Disney World? Not much! If you’re staying at either Lodge, I recommend taking some time out to take the lobby tours! Hearing about how WL was built from Stan was so neat, it actually made me have a greater appreciation of the Lodge. And the AKL art tour was exactly the kind of experience a Disney trip should be about- getting to interact with a CM from somewhere you’ve never been, learn about where they’re from, and learn about where you’re staying, as well. How often do you get a chance to talk to someone from Africa? I love that I learned that my tour guide works at a hotel back at home- it’s funny that we have the same job, but a whole world apart!

4- Beach Club Vilas- I have a new love! I really enjoyed BCV. Being able to walk to Epcot in about 5 minutes is awesome! The rooms are beautiful- just my style. The whole time I felt like I was really staying in some wealthy friend’s beach house! Having the microwave and fridge is so handy! And I loved being able to see Spaceship Earth from my room! (Well, able to see it most of the time!) Not to mention being able to see Illuminations from my balcony! I really hope to stay here again in October!

5- Crocs Athens- Are you a Crocs convert yet? If you like the idea of comfy, but just can’t deal with the ugly, let me recommend the Athens style. Yes, they are $30 flip-flops, but they RULE. I still got some blisters this trip, but overall, it was the least foot pain I’ve ever had on a Disney trip! I alternated between my Beach Crocs and the Athens, but the Athens really are my favorites!

6- Early morning at Animal Kingdom Lodge- There is something so cool about waking up before sunrise and sitting out on your balcony with some coffee to watch the savannah wake up. It was so peaceful! And then heading out to the staircase to watch the ‘show’ as the animals waited to get through the gate. SO much fun!

7- Adventurers Club – Oh, come on, you knew this would be on the list! I have loved the Club since my first visit in 2001 when Samantha Sterling pointed out Jennifer Watson’s “baby” (a stuffed Skippy from Alien Encounter) didn’t appear to be “done yet.” (Ah yes, this was long before the days of baby Alex!!!) They had me at Kungaloosh. I can’t wait to go for Halloween!

8- Hanging out on the Polynesian beach with a pizza and some ducks- It’s such a simple thing, really- taking some down time to eat lunch and enjoy the sunshine. But it’s one of my favorite memories. The beach over by Aotearoa is my favorite spot on WDW property, and relaxing there, eating yummy pizza, sticking my tired toes in the cool sand, soaking up the sun, and listening to the ducks discuss whether or not they though I’d share my food with them was a party for the senses. Now that was true “vacation” time!

9- The new Nemo ride at Epcot- It may be “The Seas” now, but I won’t stop calling it Living Seas anytime soon. I am old and set in my ways. I am, however, thrilled that they finally DID something with the ride area! Before this trip, I got to do the ride ONCE, on my first trip in 2000, and it’s been closed ever since. Such a big chunk of the pavilion just sitting there! I love what they’ve done with it! (But I do kind of miss they hydrolators.) I also love Crush. Basically, I love seeing a great pavilion getting some new life breathed into it!

10- Captain Jack’s Pirate Tutorial. Do I need to say anything more about this one, ladies? I only wish that Jack stuck around to pose for pictures after! Or was available for long walks on the beach. Whatever.

10 Worst Things

1- You can probably guess that Worst Thing #1 is having a family member pass away while I was on vacation. Getting bad news about things at home is a very odd situation when you’re at the World. On one hand, you’re upset about it, and wishing you could be home to support family. On the other hand, you know that vacation time is short, and you know you’d feel bad if you didn’t enjoy this trip to the fullest. It’s a weird situation, and I really hope I don’t have to experience it again!

2- Bad bartender service at WL. This wasn’t a huge deal by any means, but it makes the list because it is the one bad time I have *ever* in 8 trips had bad service in a restaurant or bar. Also, I think Katie now has a fear of blueberry syrup.

3- The transportation sillyness getting from Epcot to Downtown Disney- I admit this is totally my fault for forgetting that there are no longer direct busses from the parks to DD. Learn from my mistakes, friends! I get that Disney doesn’t want people parking at DD for free and taking the busses to the parks. But I really hate that we spent over an hour and a half of my very last night at Disney wandering aimlessly! And even worse that that was a lost hour and a half of Adventurers Club time! Eep! At least I’ve learned my lesson! And hey, I got to hang out with Care and talk, so at least that good came of it!

4- Ice Storm 2007!!!

I have been informed by my friends who live in Springfield (since it was the part that was declared a disaster area after the storm) that you have to use at least 3 exclamation points after the title. As thrilled as I was to not only miss the storm, but to be somewhere sunny and warm while my home was covered in ice, having crazy weather at home added quite a bit of worries to my trip. I was seriously wondering if I’d have to call up CRO and try to add on some extra nights to my trip, if they didn’t stop canceling flights! I guess this is one of the down sides to traveling during off season: You get to escape the cold weather at home, which is great, but you might not be able to get back home, either!!!

5- Florida Hair- My hair hates Florida. Does this happen to you, too? No matter how cute my hair is in the hotel room, the second I step outside- BOOM! Hair disaster. I tried curling it once- Hahahahahah! That lasted three seconds. It’s too frizzy to wear down. Too stubborn to do anything with. Disney for me means a lot of pony tails! (I recently watched a video of my first night at WDW this trip- it looks like I have a dead squirrel stapled to the back of my head instead of a ponytail! Oh, Florida, why do you hate my hair so?)

5- My Jeans- I have two pairs of the cutest jeans you will ever see. They are long enough for my Amazon woman legs, and they make me cute. But after a day or so at Disney, they fall down.

The great thing about walking a mile or so every day for a couple of wees before you go to WDW is that you break in your shoes, and get in better shape for your trip. The bad thing about it is that it makes your jeans looser, and you spend the ENTIRE trip pulling them up. They start looking super baggy on you- very unflattering in photos!

My goal is to find supercute jeans for my trip that so NOT turn into a wrinkly pile of saggyness after one day! (Come on now, let’s all admit it- we wear our jeans several days at WDW without washing them. They’re too bulky to pack a dozen pairs, and we’re all too lazy to do laundry. It’s ok. Admit it, you’ll feel better.)

6- Heelys!

I hope there is some kind of karmic retribution for the guy who invented these things! If I had a dollar for every time a kid rolled by on these things (which are supposed to be banned in the parks), we would be staying in a suite for the next trip. I get that kids’ legs get tired, and that rolling is fun, but it’s just not safe. As an able-bodied adult, it’s easy to stop suddenly or hop out of the way when a kid is rolling towards you, but there are a lot of little ones still trying to get the hang of the whole walking thing at Disney, and I’d hate to see them get crashed into.

There was one time leaving Epcot where we saw a girl wearing Heelys try to stop, but somehow tripped, and went flying in a rather acrobatic manner. She must be part cat, because she landed on her feet, and was fine, but probably a little scared. There was a quick moment where Katie and I exchanged a look that said “That was the funniest thing EVER, but is it okay to laugh at it? Will we be horrible people?” “It’s okay to laugh, since she didn’t get hurt” Katie decided, breaking the silence, and we cracked up. Yes, we are horrible people. But every time I’d seen a kid on those things the whole trip, I had been expecting them to fall, because they never quite look like they have total control. So to finally see it happen was way funnier than it probably should have been.

Katie and Crystal: Laughing at the misfortune of children since 2007! (But hey, we’re still better people than the guy that invented them!)

7- Wow. I can’t think of anything else! Um… number seven. Wow. Oh! Okay! They still play that Top 7 Must See’s at WDW over and over and over, and the host doesn’t get any less annoying (although she’s at least better than the previous ones.) Bring back the Zip a dee do dah tip for today! Or at least alternate between this and something else! PLEASE. But oh! That reminds me of something else that I loved! The resorts each seem to have their own TV channel now! It tells you the hours of the restaurants, info about the resort, etc. The best one by far was at AKL, where it gave you info on the animals. I kept meaning to video tape it, but never did! Next time!

And now that I’ve run so far out of things to complain about that I’m praising things again, I’ll end this list!

10 Tips!

1- Photopass it up- If you’re planning to buy the Photopass CD, or even just considering it, get photos taken as often as possible! Also, as you saw evidence of in the last update, not every Photopass photo you have taken is going to turn out well. Want to increase your chances of getting a great one? Don’t be afraid to have a lot taken! As you walk down Main Street USA, for example, you’re going to pass Photopass photographers in at least 10 different locations along the street. Stopping at more than one of them not only gives you variety- the castle will be closer in some than others- but it doubles your chances of getting a great photo. I also recommend getting as many of these photos done early in the day as you can- I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t get prettier after hours in the parks! The way I look when I first arrive at the park is pretty much as good as it’s going to get, so take my picture before my hair is sticking out in eight directions and my eyeliner has melted down to my cheeks!
2- January! This was my first time going in January, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be doing it again! There was a really cold day in there (my first one) where it got down in the 30s at night, but most of the time was t-shirt weather. (Hahaha, take that, folks stuck at home during Ice Storm 2007!!!) The crowds weren’t bad at all. They picked up a little around MLK day, but I avoided that by picking the day that would be the busiest, and making it a resort day. My only complaint is that if I’d just gone a week later, I would have been able to do the Pirate & Princess party!

3- Break in your shoes & Walk before your trip! Yes, Crocs are notoriously comfy. Some people can put on a new pair at WDW for the first time and be fine, but the little bumps on the bottom bother my feet if I don’t break them in first. Plus it helps to mold them to your feet for maximum comfyness! Basically, don’t assume that just because you have super comfy shoes for your trip that you don’t need to break them in first!!! I highly, highly recommend walking a mile a day for at least a week before your trip, wearing the shoes you plan to wear. When I first put my new crocs on and hopped on the treadmill, they were super-comfy… until 8/10 of a mile in, when they started rubbing the top of my toe. Any shoes can be comfortable for short distances, chances are you aren’t going to discover the problems with them until you’ve really put them to the test. My new rule is to do at least 5 miles in any new shoes before they go to WDW! Plus, it’s surprising how much a little bit of extra walking before your trip makes the long days in the parks easier! Even if you only feel like you can do half a mile a day to prepare, you’ll feel the difference!

4- Take time to appreciate your resorts- I’m slowly getting better at this. I’ve stayed at the WL so many times, but this is the first time I really set out to explore it just for the sake of exploration, as well as the first time I took the tour. The resorts have so many neat places hidden away, tucked into their hallways. You may not have time to walk up and down every hallway of AKL like I did, but why not just take a few minutes to walk farther down the hall that your room is in, and see what’s there? Or to sit in the lobby for a few minutes and just appreciate it?

5- AP Discounts!

Ready for proof of what a nerd I am? I did the math to see how much $ I saved with my AP.

I got two trips out of this pass- my Feb 06 trip, and this one. Between the two trips, I spent a total of 14 days in the parks. If I had bought a 6 day and an 8 day park hopper (one for each trip), the total cost would have been $544- nearly the price of my pass itself!

I also spent 3 nights at Pleasure Island, and one at DQ. A 1 day Disney quest ticket plus a PI AP adds up to another $100, bringing us up to $644.

I had a big list worked out detailing how much AP savings I got on resorts, but now I can’t find it, so I’m going to guess ;) I saved around $100 total on our 5 nights at Pop in Feb, I know. My resort savings on this trip was around $600.

All added up, it comes to around $1350 value from my pass! Not too shabby! 

…And once again, I don’t have ten whole things for the list! It’s a good thing I don’t have a job as a writer for David Letterman!

So, how do I end this trip report? I’ve now officially been home from this trip for two months- you guys have been very patient with me!

I honestly don’t know what else I can tell you about this trip that I haven’t already said. Three months of typing about it will do that, I guess! So now, due to your requests and my own lack of anything better to do, I’m going to go start the Disneyween pre-trip.

If you have any questions about this trip, anywhere I stayed, traveling solo, anything- ask away! I need something to keep me entertained at work! ;)

Otherwise, thank you guys all so much for reading and replying! It’s the highlight of my day to come on here and see new responses. It makes writing it so much more fun! And a special thanks to you guys who have been following along and commenting since this started- you’re awesome!!! :thumbsup2

I’d love to stay and chat, but I have a pre-trip to start. See ya real soon!

Thanks for this little review/tip. I actually tried a pair on today, but needed another size to compare and they didn't have them. Do you find they run big? I'm an 8 normally and tried on an 8, but they seemed big, and the store didn't have a 7. I want to try the 7 before I decide. I'm so glad you liked them for WDW. I've been wearing my Tevas the last couple times, but I get that little hotspot on the ball of my feet sometimes, and I'd rather not deal with that if I don't have to...but I MUST wear sandals...it's rule # 3146431 in my personal beliefs..."If it's warm, closed toed shoes are NOT an option" LOL.

Anyway, enough about my feet...thanks for a fantastic TR, can't wait to read the next one, and I hope mine entertains people as much (when I write it)!
:)

My pair are the same as my regular shoe size. I'm not sure if it applies to the Athens, but I've found with the Beach crocs that they can vary in size from pair to pair. You might want to try on a few different pairs of 8's and see if they all fit the same. And have you seen the new Capri style? I think those are my next investment! :thumbsup2
