No Day But Today- FINAL post on page 40!

He,he, I love your Trip report! So very entertaining and well written! I read it all in one night! however, when I finished to comment, the Disboards closed down for the night! Which, for me, is the official "You don't have to go offline, but you cant stay here" So I went to bed. You have inspired me to fix my trip report! I'm working on it now! Less yacking more photos! I can work on it now that I'm not glued to your report. Thanks for the inspiration!

Part 22- Might as well just call this one "Italy!"

Sorry for no updates yesterday! It was my dance class day, and crazy busy! But since yesterday was dance day, this is the perfect place to be starting this part of the report!

bellyd.jpg

I was really surprised to see that there was a new Bellydancer in Morocco! (And a different lead singer for MoRockin!) The old dancer has been there for as long as I remember (ie 2000), so I stopped in my tracks when I saw the new one. Not sure if she’s a replacement, or just filling in, but it was really exciting to watch her- I know the old one’s dances by heart by now, and having someone who had that fresh approach was neat to watch! She had good technique, too, which gets the thumbs-up from me! (Suhaila Salimpour dance training has made me a bit of a technique freak.)

I stopped in Japan for a Kaki Gori- YUM! Love those things! There were two groups of people drinking their way around the world at the Kaki Gori cart (which also sells sake), and they were really annoying. Two of them men tried climbing up the stairs to where the drummers perform, and the woman working the cart had to reprimand them. I’m all for drinking your way around the WS, but please try to avoid being an idiot!

And the display in the German toy shop window

I took a LOT of photos in Italy, y’all. It is SO pretty at night! I didn’t do as good of a job of capturing it as I would have liked to, but it was fun to try!

And there ya go! A short tour of Italy!

There are a lot of discussions on the boards about adding countries to World Showcase, and often people say they don’t know where they would go. Here’s a good example of an open spot for a country:

epcotempty.jpg

There are several spaces like this sprinkled throughout the World Showcase, but we normally just walk past them without noticing!

There seems to be a bit of a….problem… with the Temple of Heaven in China!

One of the YOAMD decorations- I thought these were pretty!

It’s also a law to take a photo of SSE as you leave the park!

sse2.jpg

Back at AKL, I stopped by Arusha Rock to see if there were any animals out. A few zebras were hanging out very near by!

ntzebra.jpg

ntzebra2.jpg

Getting those photos was HARD! I had to use an 8 sec. exposure time, and balance the camera REALLY still on the fence. I have about 20 that turned out horribly!

I also stopped by the outdoor staircase near my room, where I saw a giraffe pacing back and forth. Believe it or not, he is actually in this photo!

aklnight.jpg

See the tree in the middle? If you look REALLY closely in the area around that tree, about the same height as the fence, you’ll see a vaguely giraffe colored blur. That’s him! I had the exposure set on 8 seconds, so he was moving too fast for the camera to catch! And that, my friends, is how you hide a giraffe in a picture!

Here’s a close up

giraffewalk.jpg

If you’ve kept up, you know that all I’ve had to eat so far today are a Kaki Gori, and some free ice cream! I needed FOOD, y’all! Thank goodness for the Mara! And much to my happy surprise, they had the same flatbread pizza as the Polynesian! But made even better, because I could have zebra domes for dessert with it! Hooray!

pizza.jpg

The zebra domes no longer come in a package with the chocolate mousse domes, btw. On the good side, that means more zebray goodness in each package, but on the bad side, I really liked those chocolate things!

So, pizza and dessert in hand, I settled into bed for a quality evening of sophisticated, cultural, educational entertainment.

Can you think of a better way to end a day? Me either.

(Coming up on Day 6- One of the best free shows at WDW- and you get to see a video of it!)

How does the referral gift card for the DVC tour work? Do you have to say "I know DVC owners Jane and John Smith," or can you just claim a referral?

Yep, you have to actually have a name and where they're from (or at least I did!). Time to start befriending some DVCers! ;)

Edited to add- I'm not sure if the promotion is still going on- There was a big 15th anniversary DVC celebration going on at the time- I can't believe I forgot to mention it! They even had special offers for $ off if you were a referal.

Crystal... I'm so glad we had a chance to meet and spend some time together on your last night at Disney. Great trip report! I'm hooked and will have to spend tomorrow night reading all of the pages in this thread.

And the photos are wonderful - you have a keen eye for photography, my new Disney friend. It's now inspiring me to get my own photos sorted and posted online for sharing. (Took about 730 + 100 Photopass, and hope to find about 100 to print for my new Disney album and no more than 250 to share... *sigh*)

Cheers,
Care

Care! We never hang out anymore- what's up with that?

Are you going to post about your trip? I've been wondering how the rest went! (Hopefully you didn't spend it all trying to get from one place to another like we did that one night!)

as I read I was chanting...buy it, buy it, buy it..but I guess you didn't hear me! You are a strong and no doubt :worship: wise woman! Keep up the good work and if you could drag it out a bit, because I for one do not want your trip to end :goodvibes !

So that was YOUR voice in my head when I was on the tour! :rotfl: I literally felt like I had the angel/devil on my shoulders like they do in cartoons.

"BUY it! Then you can use the points to come back this year! Come on! It's just money!"

"NO! Debt is bad! Your car is not paid off! This TRIP is not paid off! Bad!"

"But... Disney! Pretty!"

I hate when I end up listening to the good side- the bad side is so much more fun! pirate:

Crystal... How's it going? Have you started planning for your next Disney trip yet? :)

I actually forgot there was a whole forum for trip reports, so I was checking the wrong spots for your TR. The rest of the trip was amazing -- I am so hooked on Disney now, and want to go back again. Soon. Sadly, I got sick with a bad cold on my last afternoon/evening so I didn't get to do the EMH at MK on Jan 21 as I hoped -- it would have been spectacular to see the Castle at 1:00 am. Next time.

I'll try to post a little TR and some pics once I get everything sorted, and figure out how to post pics on the board. Otherwise, I'll post a link to them.

Crystal-
Hi! I'm still enjoying your awesome TR! I love all of your pictures!!! I really like seeing the shots that you got - it must be great to stop whenever you want and take pictures of everything! I'm always getting dragged along because I take too long. :sad2: I'm so glad you are sharing your solo WDW adventure with us!

Can't wait to see/read more!!! :thumbsup2

Some of your Italy pics are breathtaking, I love this one!

I did the college program years ago and worked the Food and Wine festival in 2002. They built a new country - Spain!! My memory isn't too hot, but I think it was between Germany and Italy. It had a few small buildings - mostly focusing on olive oil. And they had flamenco dancers! They populated it with all the Epcot CMs who were from Puerto Rico, and a couple times I eneded up there, serving sangria in the wine kiosk. People would constantly walk up and try to have conversations in Spanish, and I would have to apologize for how very poor my Spanish was!

They kept the mini-pavilion up for about six weeks after the festival ended. There were rumours that Spain was considering funding a fully developed pavilion, but it didn't happen. Too bad!

Day 6- Part 1- The Shadows Gave Way To Light

(Yep, Rent lyric titles are back! And I just realized that for our Tea afternoon, I should have used “I had a tea the other day!” “You couldn’t pay!” “Oh yeah.”)

Take a moment to picture it: A cool Florida morning- a little chilly, but much warmer than you would be at home for sure. It’s still dark outside, and everything is quiet. If you look carefully, you can see a group of wildebeest laying out between some trees, most of them still asleep. It seems like the whole world is still asleep, and you’re the only one experiencing this moment. You settle into a chair, sip your coffee, and watch as a set of headlights appear- a truck of CMs checking the savannah for the morning, putting out food for the animals. Slowly, gradually, the sun starts to peek up over the horizon, light spilling across the sky. Down below, exotic birds are performing their morning songs, their rituals of greeting the day. Eventually, the stillness is broken as doors around you start to slide open, and voices begin to spill through the air. Morning. The people are waking up, the savannah is turning from darkness to color, and the day is beginning. Soon, everyone else will be piling onto busses for a day full of adventure. But what about a different kind of adventure? What about just spending the entire day in this place?

Marilyn Monroe says that “What the hell?” is usually the best answer. So, why not?

Today, we don’t leave the Lodge. Today, we soak it all in.

Ready to join in?

akl4.jpg

Getting up to watch the sunrise and spending an entire day at the Lodge has been in my plans through most of the trip planning process. There is SO much to see and do at this resort, I felt like the only way to really get the experience was to spend a whole day there, soaking it all in.

One thing I learned- if you’re wanting to watch the sun start to rise on the savannah in the morning in the winter in FL… think 7am, not 5. My original plan was to get up at 4:30am for this day, but back on the first day of my trip when I woke up around 6am and it was still dark, I knew that I could modify my plan! I set my alarm for 6:30 this morning, but it didn’t start to get light until around 7. Good to know!

While it was still dark out, the only thing I could see was a truck driving around the savannah. At one point they stopped and looked around on the ground with flashlights for a really long time. I wonder what they were doing? Looking for a missing animal, or collecting samples or something? Either way, they kept me entertained until the sun started coming up.

I don’t think it’s warned enough that if you are noisy on your balcony, EVERYONE hears you. Not just the people on the balcony next to you, but more like the people on the 50 balconies next to you. Some of it even echoes to the building across the savannah from you. Sound carries like crazy here! Of course, that does give you the opportunity to overhear some hilarious stuff!

There were two kids outside with their parents somewhere near me, and they were out watching the animals. One of the kids had an… unexpected… favorite animal.

The scene: Two graceful giraffes are making their way across the savannah just below us.

Kid: “There’s a giraffe. OH! Hey! LOOK! DUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DUCKS!!!!”

Sounds like someone’s parents could have just taken him to the lake and saved a few hundred dollars a night! ;)
Now, overhearing voices is bad sometimes, but other things are worse. Someone had something that kept beeping about once a minute. It sounded like maybe a phone or some kind of alarm clock- it went on for probably 20 minutes- drove me nuts!

So, what do you have for breakfast if you’re spending the day at AKL?

I can’t believe I’m admitting this.

Here, my friends, is breakfast:

zebrad.jpg

When I went down to the Mara to pick up my healthy, nourishing breakfast, I noticed that there were already quite a few swimmers in the pool:

pool.jpg

Say it with me now. “LOOK! DUCKS!!!!”

After my super-nutritional breakfast, I went out to the stairway to see what was going on out there. I had perfect timing to witness one of the best free shows at WDW! All of the animals from Arusha were gathered over here, waiting to be let back into their barn area. ALL of the animals! The giraffes were particularly frisky, bucking at the Ankole cattle to freak them out. It was so much fun to watch!

Finally, the bell rang, and they let the animals into their area, and they were all so excited! The funniest part was that they had an obvious hierarchy- they all entered the area with their own species, and in what was obviously a certain order. The giraffes went first….

Okay, instead of trying to explain it all, I’m just going to share the video!

Yes, finally, a video!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8PtUa9M6HE

I obviously took a TON of animal photos today. Instead of sorting them out in chronological order, I think I’ll just group em by species here! (Oooh, lazy!)

Let’s start with graffes!

I ended up really glad that I had no plans to go anywhere this morning; It started raining around 9:30 am, and went on for over an hour! Not the usual quick 15 min Florida rain, but actual pouring down rain!

A few photos taken in the room:

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the places I REALLY want to go someday!

I do have an interesting housekeeping story to share for today! Since it’s just me in the room, I don’t really need housekeeping every day. I only use so many towels, and I can survive without my bed being made. I called housekeeping today to let them know that I didn’t need any service (At my hotel, if you just put the Do Not Disturb sign out, the housekeepers have to keep going back and checking to see if you’ve taken it down, so by calling, they shouldn’t have to check.) I figured I’d save a housekeeper some trouble, make life easier. Should work that way, right? Apparently not!

When I called to request no service, they told me to put my DND sign out. I didn’t have one, so they said they would send one over. It arrived pretty quickly, and they just slid it under the door (to avoid disturbing me, I guess!)

I also forgot to mention that when I checked in yesterday, a housekeeper knocked on the door shortly after and asked if the room was ok. Looked fine to me, so I told her so, but then I started to wonder why they were asking! So today when I left the room to go film the video above, and came back to find two housekeepers and a manager on a segway outside my room, I was confused. They said that they had gotten a call for a special cleaning on my room today, but got there and found the DND sign out, so they weren’t sure what to do. I told them that I’d called for no cleaning, confusion was solved, life was good!

Then I left the room later for lunch. As I was leaving, I passed a maintenance man. “Problems with the air conditioner?” he asked. “Noooo….” “I got a call for the AC in your room.” I told him that I didn’t call, and it seemed to be working fine, but he was welcome to go check it out if he wanted. He said that as long as it was working fine, there was no reason to check it, and we both went off on our separate ways.

Much later that night, I came back to the room (yeah, we’re not to that part in the day yet, but I’m skipping ahead for now!) and noticed that the carpet was once again (or still?) wet. So maybe what I thought was freshly shampooed carpet earlier was really some kind of leak from the AC? Maybe there really was something wrong with my room, and I just missed it? The world may never know! But I thought it was hilarious that on a day I tried to save the staff some work, they ended up at my room 3 times! At least I had good intentions!

(I also thought it was hilarious, but smart, that they gave the housekeeping manager a Segway to get around the resort! It really is a LONG walk! At one point, I timed the walk from my room to the lobby, and it was 2 and a half minutes.)

And now back to AKL photos!

A few shots of the wildebeests…

I really like these guys. I remember reading somewhere that bushmen in Africa believe that the wildebeest was last animal that God created, and that it is made up of all leftover parts.

More coming soon! All of Day 6 will be going up by the end of the day, I promise!

I thought you would have had five miso soup, four seaweed salad
Three soy burger dinner, two tofu dog platter
And one pasta with meatless balls for breakfast!

Keep 'em coming Crystal!

They taste the same... if you close your eyes! ;)

And 13 orders of fries!

I actually tried to find a spot to use that as a title, but apparently, I never eat in this report! :rotfl:

Part 25- Emotion, Devotion, To Causing a Comotion!- Day 6 Continued yet again!

And now a few other random animals:

ankole.jpg

I love the Ankole cattle, especially after watching them outside that morning. The pointy things in the foreground are part of the fencing that keep the animals where they’re supposed to be. They generally blend in to the point of near invisibility.

Imagine having horns big enough to scratch your rear end with!

One of my goals today was to walk down every hallway of the Lodge to check out the different views, and see all of the artwork. It’s actually a much more ambitious goal than it sounds! The lodge, like the WL is HUGE! I think I walked as far around the hallways of this resort as I would have spending a day in the parks!

At most of the hallway intersections, there are displays about aspects of African culture. Here’s an exaple:

example.jpg

They’re really neat to read, and conveniently enough, they correspond to the artifacts displayed nearby!

Some of the art found wandering the hallways:

art1.jpg

art2.jpg

art3.jpg

art5.jpg

Another goal for today was the art tour of the lobby! It meets at the firepit, and I got there a little early, so I had time to sit by the fire for a few minutes.

firepit1.jpg

firepit2.jpg

At one point I happened to look up, and noticed the cave-like paintings above the firepit!

ceiling.jpg

Soon I spotted the tour guide (Kenneth from Botswana) suggested we wait a few minutes to see if anyone else turned up, and soon another couple did, so we were 4! The man from the couple asked a lot of good questions during the tour, but too many of them were geared towards the idea of “Why doesn’t Africa try to be more like America?”, and it started to get on my nerves. He asked things like if Africa had considered all using the same currency. Dude, even the countries in Europe don’t all use the same currency, and it’s a way smaller continent! I think he had some issues accepting that Africa is a continent, not a country. Also, news flash, guy! Not everyone wants to be like America! A lot of Africa does need our help- I’m a big supporter of MSF (Doctors Without Borders) who do things like provide clean water and medicine for refuges. But I’m against trying to push our culture and way of life on other people. Different doesn’t mean better or worse, it means different. (…and I’m off my soapbox now!)

Um, so, what was I talking about? Oh, yeah, art tour!

I had been chatting with Kenneth and found that we both work in hotels, but VERY different ones! His only holds a max. of 24 people, and they do safaris! Think he would trade me for a while?

The tour covered about 7 different displays in the lobby- this report would be eight zillion more pages long if I covered it all, so I’ll just talk about the giant mask!

memask.jpg

Yes, it’s a mask.

I wanted to use this picture again just for size perspective! Can you imagine dancing with this thing on your head?

Now, can you believe that the boy who dances with it on his head is between the ages of 8 and 15? In order to be the one who wears the mask, you have to be “very pure”, so anyone over 16 is out. (Maybe that’s the age at which they marry? Not quite sure.) To dance with the mask is a HUGE honor, and the dancer gets to keep it when his reign is over. (When it’s time for a new boy, they make a new mask.)

I really suggest taking this tour if you get a chance! It’s in the afternoon, so it falls nicely into afternoon resort break time! Plus, it’s free!

A couple more lobby photos:
