No CC for car hire deposit?

I've got a friend going without a credit card and I know in the past ive not left a cc on file with a car hire company but this was a number of years ago and I can't remember who it was with. Anyone been lately and not left a cc as security for car hire?

We dont have a credit card so leave our debit card as it has a visa sign

We used to go with dollar and have the full packaga and never used to have a credit card and never out a debit card down either

we also go Debit Card with Alamo.
They all accept Debit Cards as long as you have a return plane ticket (or something like that)

Now, if you don't have a CC or a Debit Card it's another ball game. From what I get, cash deposit for foreigners (like us) can sometimes be a nightmare, especially if you get the deposit refunded by check for which you may pay ridiculous fees to cash in, in a UK bank.
