Is there going to be a thread for Aug? I know these threads were popular a while ago. Need some help saving. Just paid off our cruise, now just need to stop buying "extras" to save for Christmas and spending money. Our cruise is in Jan.
I'm not sure about August, at least for myself. I did No Buy July -first time I've ever done this - and it has cost me a fortune!
Probably the best part of doing a No Buy month is tracking where all the money goes--I found out I spend a lot more money on food than I realized, but we do have a son home from college.
Good luck saving for Christmas--and enjoy your cruise!
I don't understand these threads. Can you please explain what the people who post on it are supposed to do? everyone has to spend money, pay bills, buy food. How can it be a no buy month? Help?

You can set it up however you want....I do no extras and try and save as much money as I can...for example I get $140 a week for food/hba so I try and save as much of that $140 I can and not spend any extras.

You can make your no buy whatever you would like and benefit you. Some people like to have as many $0 days as they can.
Ex. 8/1-$0
8/2-$0
8/3-$5 Starbucks
Something like this. Î do a mix of no spend days and buying only what we need.

I wrote guidelines for myself. Here are my July No Buy guidelines. Yours would probably be different:
*Keep walking past those enticing "clearance" displays at the front of the store.
*No visiting LL Bean daily--ya'll have no idea how hard this one is for me!
*No alcohol purchases--drink only what we have at home.
*No shopping just because I'm bored or shopping as an activity. Shop only for what we need.
* Ask myself before each purchase--do we really need this? Focus on what that money could buy (vacations!)
*Seek out free events/activities for family fun.
*Stay completely away from favorite used book store.
*Don't feel guilty about paying for some fun or perks--just consider it first.

No buy is what it means. You don't 'buy' your mortgage or electric bill, you pay those. The no buy is in reference to disposable income. You can set grocery limits or eating out limits or just aim for x days where you don't actually spend any money, this often requires preplanning for gas purchases.
If you tend to have an issue with money slipping through your fingers, these exercises can be helpful to find your leaks or triggers or to put a halt on the shopping. Or just helpful in plugging leaks or upping your savings, etc.
Everyone has items that you must buy, that's a given. Just trying to cut the extra from our budget. We spend $$$ at the grocery store then turn right around and spend $$$ eating out. I look at it like putting our budget on a diet.
