No Buy January

1/14/08

$55.96 for cloth diaper supplies
$14.32 for milk, juice and lunch meat.
$10.42 pier one 75% Christmas

Ok, next month I know to add a LOT more to the baby column! I won't be buying things like diapers next month but something new will pop up probably.

Yep. Constantly. All the way until they get to college.:rotfl:

I am reading over the posts and seeing that everyone is doing so well. Here is my question, with really sticking to my budget I have finally gotten to where I have money that I am putting in savings.

But I am starting to get the urge to go shopping (which I know is what got me in the place).

What are some things that you do to stop the impulse shopping when the extra dollar is in hand?

For shopping online I put everything I want in the shopping basket, then leave it for 24 hours. If I *really* want it I remember it and go back and get it the next day, but most of the time I forget about it and never order it.

For "real" shopping I don't buy anything without a list, and I make myself make a list before I go in, then wait a few days and usually the desire to get something (like SHOES) has waned. Sticking to a list and making it beforehand has been INSANELY difficult for me but I've realized it's the only way it's going to work for me, personally.

I actually get a charge (ha ha) out of shopping and finding 'super deals', but I've also discovered that they're not really good deals in the big picture of things because I spent ALL my money on "good deals"...

I started doing this routine last year and have managed to get away from it but it really helped in the beginning.

For online shopping I put whatever I want into my cart and will even go all the way through check out until I can't go any further w/o paying. Then I just close out the window.

I'd put whatever I was wanting into my cart and then do my real shopping by the time I Was ready to check out, the item would have been 'mine' for long enough that I had no issue putting it back. It was strange but really worked. Now I can just touch the item and that is good enough. LOL

I've figured out how much I get paid per minute, sometimes it's not worth the tradeoff! :)

I like to come here and post or read the posts. It really helps. I also imagine having to post about falling off the wagon. The thread really helps keep me accountable.

You could try no money shopping. If you are a mall junky, you could go, but only take in say, $5. I still spend about an hour when I go in Target. Last Saturday, I spent well over an hour and still only spent the $3.xx for cold medicine. But, I only took in $10 to buy coffee and cold medicine. The more I do it, the easier it is to do.

You could get rid of the extra dollars. Stash it away in a savings account or pull it out of your wallet and put it somewhere else. Maybe pay a bill early? When we were planning our last Disney trip, I made out the tip envelopes for Mousekeeping when I had the urge to spend. I then made out all kinds of envelopes for some of our expenses during the trip. I never had to fumble for my debit card or cash because I had envelopes marked "lunch at airport" and so on.

HTH!:goodvibes

1/15/2008 $85.00 - not in budget Soccer Registration for DD - but cheaper than the T-Ball she did last year so I figured $40 saved :)

Guess what?? My expenses for the coming weekend with my sisters just went down. My one sister who was going to be out of town for the weekend now is not and she can come get me at the airport AND lend me her extra car for the time I am there. Yay! That is about $80 I no longer have to spend.:cool1:

Other than that though I have not been doing too well. I think my brain went into vacation mode too early.

I have to start staying home, I need several more zero days this month!

I had an embarrasing episode at Walmart. I brought my debit card but it was for the closed account and it didn't work. Luckily with the removal of a birthday present I had enough gift card and cash. Oops.

I spent $22.15 in cash and another $25 ish on the giftcard. It was mostly formula and some small groceries.

I really wanted to buy the new antibacterial windex but I guess there is a coupon out there because that entire section was cleaned out!

1/15 - $1.02 at Chicago Produce for avocados (still in budget!)

So I have $4 left in the Groceries Envelope for the rest of the month - who thinks I can do it? :rotfl2:

I picked up my coat at the cleaners and then stepped over to the next counter to get part of it sewn. I always sew my own buttons, beads, minor repairs, etc., but this looked a bit complicated for me.

I saw the seamstress write down the expected cost - only $3! I might look into taking a few more items to her. The hour it takes me to sew on three buttons or so is worth a lot more to me right now... but I AM trying to save money, so I'll keep at the mending pile for now. :upsidedow

I LOVE this idea!!! I think I'm going to do that :)

1/15: $0... another long day at work and no energy to spend. Although DBF took me out for ice cream on a Coldstone GC he got from my parents for his bday :goodvibes

Sometime this week I'm going to lunch with a friend. I've been good these past two days not going out to lunch at work.

I'm stressed and tired and all but things are going well in the new job. It will take a while getting used to it, but I think it's all going to work out :goodvibes

I need to go grocery shopping tomorrow night or the next. Then I leave w/ my friend on Friday for DC. She's paying me $45 for gas, which I think is more than enough for my car. We're going to an engagement party on Saturday night so no drinking out at bars. We'll see how the weekend goes! I'm going to try for reasonable!!! I've budgeted $100.

So I went to Meijer to get groceries but I found out about a catalina deal ending tonight so I worked that instead.

1st Meijer:
spent $73.74
got back $140 in oyno cats

2nd Meijer:
got a bit of food (most of the sales things were out) and milk and spent .17
and used 2 of the cats.

Still have $130 in cats to use up.

I was doing pretty well this month until today :( I had a VERY bad day which began with spilling my coffee thermos down my leg while driving this morning (turned a corner and the cup holder wasn't in all the way). SO... I just HAD to stop at the gas station and buy a cup of coffee and since I was having such a bad day I got the big cup. yup 1.57 wasted - but at least I resisted the temptation of a donut

 Had a $0 day today! Oh, and I see I am in the same flannel jammie pants I woke up in!:rotfl: So there might be something to that theory. But the furtherest I got out my door was to pick up the box Fedex threw on the porch. (Man, Zappos is amazing. If I had a shoe habit, it would surely be my downfall.) Tomorrow, I may venture out to the library. It'll depend on DS. Sometimes, he grows into a giant octopus at the library.:rotfl:

Neatokimmo~I just may do that with the entire $160. I am probably going to have to buy a new suit for work next month and if things work out I'll need to spruce my wardrobe quite a bit. My best suit was bought a year before DS was born and it would take the mother of all spanx to get back into it! I have really started looking frumpy since DS.

:dance3: Hang in there everybody! The month is half way over! If you need something fun to do, go to http://www.dreamcmo.com/magic-aptitude-test.php. It was quick and fun. Much funner than SATs or GREs! I scored in as Simba!:dance3:

I am Cinderella and now I have an ad to apply to be a CMO? Is that a job at Disney?

I worked there eons ago in the marketing department, I'd work at Disney again in a heartbeat :)

Well yesterday, I can honestly say I have the urge to go out and buy something, because I knew that I had extra money on me.

So, first I took a walk. Figure that would at least get me out of the house. I was a little nervous because I knew I had to go to the mall to return something.

The kids and I went to the Disney Store and I was tempted to buy all of use something (even had some pins for my daughter in hand). But I stopped and really looked at the everything and said I don't need any of this and left the store.

I did end of spending $10.00 on gas, but I used that money from the return. So no money really came out of my pocket.

I do have to sign my DD up for gymantics today so that will be $30.00.

Past the 1/2 way mark YEAH!

Krystine

I think my computer messed up when I tried to post yesterdays so,

1/15 $10 (notary, unplanned)
$32 (mailing, in budget)
1/16 $0

Yesterday I paid to get a paper notarized at the bank. I could've had it done for free, but my kids were acting up and I would've had a long wait so I paid $10 for my sanity.

Today I am not planning on leaving my house so $0. And I haven't gotten gas yet this year :cool1: , but I will probably have to tomorrow or Friday, I get nervous if I get below 1/2 tank.
